Abstract

Since 1978, women have been granted legal rights to self-determined abortion, from which the idea of women’s right to choose achieves its victory in the current Norwegian abortion law. Behind this notion of choice lies an assumption that perceives women as subjects of choice who should personally decide whether or not having an abortion would be the proper way to overcome difficult decisions on their pregnancies. Women’s right to choose is celebrated as an ideal concept in consultation services for women who face difficult decisions on whether or not to have an abortion. Counselors and health workers I interviewed used the notion of women’s right to choose to describe the professionalism of their work; that is, to create distance from a woman’s decision-making process. By employing engaged listening to collect ethnographic data, this study explores limitations encountered with the idea of women’s right to choose as applied to care practices for women who are uncertain about their pregnancies. This inquiry examines care relations formed under conditions where the notion of individual choice is not ideal in practice. This study shows how individual choices are socially bound. Women’s status as subject of choice is not predetermined but enacted through emotional labor performed by healthcare professionals, which could affect clients’ openness and self-efficacy to enact a choice. Emotional labor challenges the claim of neutrality which was described as being emotionally detached from clients, as emotion itself is often deemed insignificant for making rational decisions.

Abstract

Various productions of knowledge about masturbation are channeled through the media. The production of knowledge disseminated through technology presents ambivalent conditions that make individual consciousness never complete. However, various studies on masturbation have not touched the media aspect. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to examine the power of the media on masturbation in producing social body discipline. Foucault’s concept of discourse becomes a theoretical knife. Foucault’s discourse orientation leads to an analysis of the power of knowledge on the discipline of social action. The research method is qualitative. The media used are Youtube Clarin Hayes and Lampu Islam. The results of the study show that the media is never neutral, because it is intertwined with the politics of knowledge. It affects the social reality of society in creating sex ideologies and technologies that go beyond the biological body.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the relationship between science and the plantation industry on colonial expansion in East Sumatra. In this study, science is regarded as a colonial construction, which in the context of East Sumatra was used as a tool for colonial expansion, supporting the process of surplus accumulation through the plantation industry. This research applied the historical method, in which analysis was carried out on primary sources such as colonial scientific publications, travelogues, newspapers, and magazines. An examination of these primary sources was conducted by analyzing the text and the context. The decolonial perspective provides an analytical framework for disentangling the colonial relations and conditions behind every scientific project and its publication in East Sumatra. It turns out that the rationale of colonial science was formulated in favor of colonial plantation industry. To conclude, it is apparent that the relationship between science and the plantation industry was intense and symbiotic. The plantation industry was able to thrive with the support of scientific rationality, and conversely, geography, geology, agronomy and health flourished with the financial support from plantation companies.

Abstract

Urban environmental problems such as flooding and water pollution have actually occurred in Jakarta (formerly Batavia) since the Dutch colonial era. Batavia was one of the cities with a myriad of urban planning problems, such as canal flooding which continues to this day. This article was written to find the root of the water problem in Jakarta by reviewing the development of canal construction from the Oud Batavia to the Nieuwe Batavia era. This study was conducted to identify the colonial government’s methods for dealing with flooding and repairing problematic canals. Thus, this research is expected to provide an insight for the current government on ways to deal with flood problems in Jakarta in the contemporary era. Results show that the expansion of settlements from Kota Tua to Weltevreden was also influenced by the dirty canal environment in Oud Batavia. Dirty, sedimentary, and problematic canals were restored, but the old problems persist. Then, Weltevreden was chosen as Ommelanden (expansion area) of Oud Batavia.

Abstract

This study aims to show the development of sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in Bandung from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This research positions sanitation and hygiene infrastructure as part of urban technology that contributes to public welfare. This research used the historical method which consisted of four stages: heuristics, critics, interpretation, and historiography. Results show that sanitation management in Bandung in the early 20th century was conducted by harmonizing technology and natural fortress. Gemeente Bandung anticipated the unhygienic habits of the villagers, environmental pollution, and spread of diseases by providing clean water, toilet facilities, public washing, and an integrated sewage system. The construction of infrastructure that supported sanitation management was carried out from 1910 to 1938. As a result, by 1938, Bandung had already had clean water reservoirs, clean water pipelines, open pipelines for rainwater disposal, closed pipelines for waste disposal, sewage treatment systems, waste treatment management, and road cleaning services.

Abstract

Since the early 2000’s, Indonesian literary works raising the issue of homosexuality have been increasing in number. However, the proliferation of discourse on homosexuality cannot be necessarily interpreted as Indonesian literature’s increasing sympathy with homosexuality. Adequate discussion is needed regarding perceptions, perspectives, and attitudes towards homosexuality in literary works with the theme of homosexuality. In relation to this, we found that works raising the issue of homosexuality have not been able to escape from the framework of the prevailing social order and norms, namely heterosexism. This study aims to see how the idea of heterosexism works in narrating and embodying homosexuality in six chosen works with the theme of homosexuality. Results show that these six works address the robustness of heterosexism by presenting homosexual characters as individuals who are haunted by confusion about their own sexual orientation, giving stereotypical reasons for being homosexuals, and establishing homosexual relationships with gender roles that operate within the framework of heterosexuality.
