Abstract

Research on the effect of nitrate and phosphate concentration on the abundance of chlorophyll-a at Gapang beach, Sabang, Aceh Province was conducted in March 2017. This study aims to determine the effect of nitrate and phosphate concentration and its association with the abundance of chlorophyll-a in coastal waters of Gapang, Sabang, Aceh Province. Determination of 4 location based on purposive sampling method and analysis of chlorophyll-a concentration and nitrate and phosphate nutrients using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results of the study at 4 location showed that the content of chlorophyll-a at Gapang beach ranged from 25 to 16 mg/L while the concentration of nitrate and phosphate at Gapang beach ranged from 840 to 630 mg/L and 64 to 51 mg/L. The abundance of chlorophyll-a is closely related to the availability of nitrate and phosphate elements so as to know the trophic status of the coastal of Gapang waters. Based on the relationship between chlorophyll-a abundance, nitrate and phosphate concentration indicates that the coastal waters of Gapang, Sabang are included in the category of eutrophic waters.Penelitian tentang pengaruh konsentrasi nitrat dan fosfat terhadap kelimpahan klorofil-a di pantai Gapang, Sabang, Provinsi Aceh telah dilakukan pada bulan Maret 2017. Abstract

Intensive aquaculture systems that are not managed properly often cause problems that disrupt the balance of the environment so that shrimp are susceptible to disease. One of the aquaculture innovations that have been developed to minimize disease impact is shrimp farming with low salinity. This study aims to determine the performance of intensive Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp culture with low salinity. This study used quantitative descriptive analysis with a purposive sampling technique in three ponds for three maintenance cycles. The result of the study on three cycles of vannamei shrimp culture with low salinity overall found that productivity ranged from 2.35 to 3.69 kg/m2. ADG values in aquaculture ponds ranged from 0.26 – 0.36 g/day. The survival rate ranged from 61% to 98%, and the feed conversion ratio ranged from 1.01 to 1.62. The survival rate tends to increase, and FCR value tends to decrease in 3 cycles of cultivation. Water quality including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, phosphate, ammonia, and TOM indicate the optimal range based on water quality standards for intensive vannamei shrimp culture (SNI 01-7246-2006). At the same time, nitrite and alkalinity exceed the SNI standard but this nitrite and alkalinity level could still be tolerated by vannamei shrimp during the rearing period.  Overall, water quality during the rearing period can still support the growth of vannamei shrimp. The above result showed that vannamei shrimp culture at low salinity (6-8 mg L-1) has the potential to be developed. Keywords:Intensive culture Litopenaeus vannamei Low salinityProductivity

Abstract

Several marine research have attempted to design a data observation system using Internet of Things (IoT). In the future, this system is predicted to become a necessity for marine researchers as a strategic technology to continuously access data. Therefore, this study provides information on the development and application of observation and data collection systems using IoT. The coastal weather and tidal data were obtained via the automatic coastal weather station and acoustic gauge respectively. Meanwhile, the various research activities commenced in July, 2018. In the first year, an operational observation system was developed, while comprehensive baseline data such as air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and sea surface level were also collected. This collection system is reliable, provides real-time data, and easily accessible with internet connection. Furthermore, the Bintan Marine Observation System (The Bintan MOS) is also suitable for other uses such as; monitoring water quality and marine mammals, as well as disaster mitigation. The adoption of this system by other sectors potentially conditions marine researchers for data exchange, to fully understand the fluctuations in coastal weather of Western and Eastern Indonesia as well as the tropical and sub-tropical marine weather. This study successfully developed the Bintan MOS, capable of providing reliable information both off-line and real-time.Keywords:Marine observation systemCoastal weatherTidalBintan

Abstract

The exact number of coral species in Indonesia is not unclear yet, in 2002 the coral taxonomist, JEN Veron, stated 590 species, and it was supported by an Indonesian coral taxonomist, Suharsono, eight years later. The current coral species data is 605 but it is from Coral Triangle Region area (CT).  The eastern of Indonesia, which is located in the Coral Triangle Region, has received a lot of attention from coral researchers, due to coral species that have been described. On the other hand, the coral reef from the western part of Indonesia, including in the East Kalimantan, has not been explored much in recent times. Through the ecoregion view, E. Kalimantan region is clustered into ecoregion 43 (Sulu Sea) which has 540 coral species. Miang Island is one of the inhabited islands from E. Kalimantan, and has an unexplored coral reef ecosystem. The method had been used in this research is descriptive, which uses photos of live corals to describe colony characteristics corals. The results of the study have described 36 species of coral and several invertebrates that make up coral reefs on Miang Island. Keywords:Hard coralAcroporaPoritesIdentificationPulau Miang

Abstract

Indonesia is recognized as one of the territories that have the highest reef fish biodiversity in the world. One of the commercially valuable fish in this area is the groupers (locally name "kerapu"). At least 76 grouper species have been reported in Indonesian waters, with three species were categorized into "vulnerable", five species "Data Deficient", and 68 species under the "Least Concern" category based on IUCN classification. The increasing exploitations rate had been reported caused the grouper stocks in Indonesia to decrease and threatened extinction. However, only limited scientific data is available regarding the grouper in Indonesia, including their identification. In most fish landing sites across Indonesia, the groupers are morphologically identified and recorded as "kerapu" to replace their scientific species names. Accurate species identification is essential in designing appropriate and sustainable management of fisheries resources. One of the tools that have been used in fish identification is DNA barcoding. In the last two decades, this molecular method has been applied to identify many fish groups globally, including grouper fish. This study reviewed the DNA barcoding approach in grouper identification in Indonesia based on the available literature. Keywords:DNA barcodingGrouperMolecular TaxonomyFisheriesIndonesia
