Abstract

This study examines the impact of China's electric vehicle distribution on the cultural identity of Jakartans. With increasing air pollution and congestion in the capital city, electric vehicles have emerged as a sustainable transportation solution. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection through interviews with 5 sources of information, namely Mr. Susanto, Mr. Robert, Mrs. Astrid, Mrs. Ratna and Mrs. Jeane. This was done to understand the adoption of electric vehicles affecting social values, cultural interactions, and community mobility patterns. The results of the study show that electric vehicles are not only an alternative transportation, but also a symbol of status and modernity. People are starting to adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, encouraging the formation of communities that care about sustainability issues. However, challenges such as skepticism about product quality and concerns about losing jobs in the traditional transportation sector have also emerged, creating resistance. To overcome these challenges, public education and collaboration between government, industry, and communities are essential. With an inclusive approach, the distribution of electric vehicles can improve the quality of life of Jakartans and shape a more progressive cultural identity. This study is expected to provide new insights into the relationship between technology, culture, and society in the modern era.

Abstract

The division of gender roles in space is already evident from the layout of traditional Javanese buildings, which reflects a patriarchal culture where men are at a higher level than women. These gender boundaries and norms are also reflected in the spatial form of public bath in Solo. This research uses the archaeological method by Deetz which consists of data collection, data processing, and data interpretation. Explaining by presenting facts based on data obtained in the field, then data processing is carried out by involving analysis of the field data that has been collected. The last stage is the interpretation of data on Mangkunegaran’s Solo public bath. The spatial layout is interpreted by considering the spatial and gender context. This research aims to understand how the understanding of the reconstruction of gender aspects is reflected in the form of a spatial system in Solo public bath built by Mangkunegaran. The results of this study show that gender, although an abstract social construction, has a real manifestation in the spatial layout of the building that can be observed through various aspects. The space designated for men contains primary and masculine values and has an open character, while the space for women contains secondary, feminine, and closed values. This research also found that the spatial arrangement reflects not only social status but also gender hierarchy.

Abstract

Driven by China's "Going Global" strategy, the international influence of Chinese TV series continues to grow. As a key vehicle of China's cultural soft power, these TV series have significantly bolstered China's global cultural presence, particularly in Southeast Asia, by showcasing China's rich history and contemporary societal changes. Despite certain geographical and cultural similarities between China and Southeast Asia, cultural differences still present challenges to the dissemination of Chinese TV dramas, particularly in areas such as language, values, and religious beliefs. This paper not only analyzes effective strategies for mitigating "cultural discounts" but also challenges the traditional one-dimensional view of cultural discount theory by examining the success of Chinese films and TV dramas currently popular in Southeast Asia. In fact, the influence of cultural discounts in this region is relatively minor, demonstrating that Chinese culture can achieve broader recognition and resonance in the Southeast Asian market through targeted adaptation and localization strategies.

Abstract

This article discusses the lasting impact of colonial-era policies on the gender system portrayed in the Filipino LGBT coming-of-age movie "Rookie" (2023) by analyzing the gendered notions in sports and education. Rookie, directed by Samantha Lee, tells the story of Maria "Ace" Asuncion who is navigating and exploring life as a transfer student learning to master volleyball. As a rookie or newbie at school and in the sport, Ace comes across gendered notions in sports and education that reveal the state of the gender system. Using the concept of 'Coloniality of Gender' by Maria Lugones, this paper argues how colonial policies impact the gender system by examining gendered notions whose origin can be traced to the history of colonialization in the Philippines by Spain and the United States. Rookie shows the current picture of the enduring influence of colonial-era policies on the gender system through its portrayal of sports and education. However, the movie also portrays how the main characters defy from heterosexualist gendered notions through an exploration of their sexuality.

Abstract

This study focuses on evaluating the capabilities of Instagram translation feature in translating Arabic Islamic poetry, a literary genre rich in linguistic nuances and cultural context. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis between the automatic translations produced by Instagram and manual translations done by experts. The findings reveal that, despite being useful, Instagram's translation feature often fails to fully capture the essence of Arabic Islamic poetry, with significant errors in understanding context and language nuances. These errors include inaccuracies in translating key words and difficulties in interpreting deeper meanings often closely tied to cultural and historical contexts. The study highlights the limitations of automatic translation technology when dealing with complex, layered texts, emphasizing the importance of additional resources such as manual translation and cultural knowledge in understanding poetry. The research recommendations stress using Instagram's translation feature as an initial tool for basic text comprehension, not as the primary source. These findings open an important discourse on the need to develop translation technologies more sensitive to cultural and linguistic contexts, as well as the importance of a more humane and contextual approach in the translation process. This research contributes significantly to the fields of applied linguistics, translation, and social media studies.

Abstract

The shroud, a textile used to wrap and accompany humans in death, is far from a simple object. Within Islamic traditions, the white cloth applied to the deceased's body takes on various changes, modifications, and deeper meanings when individuals contextualize their own beliefs and experiences through it. This study focuses on the shroud's role in Islamic death rituals in Java, revealing a multiplicity of meanings as theorized by Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of heteroglossia. By employing a pragmatic semiotic approach, this research interprets and analyses the symbols that emerge from the contextualization of these textiles within Javanese death rituals. The study’s significance lies in its exploration of the cultural richness and symbolism associated with shrouds in Javanese Islam, thereby shedding light on the intricate interplay between religion and culture in shaping human experiences and beliefs around death.

Abstract

The conflict in Papua represents a complex interplay of identity, sovereignty, and historical grievances, shaped by structural violence and socio-political exclusion. This study explores strategies for advancing peace-building and justice in Papua, drawing on Johan Galtung’s theory of peace and conflict and comparative lessons from the Aceh conflict in Indonesia and the Irish Republican Army’s (IRA) struggle in South Ireland. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing root causes such as historical injustices, economic inequality, and cultural exclusion. Inclusive governance and dialogues that respect ethnic diversity and local identities are critical to creating sustainable solutions. Case studies reveal that effective conflict resolution integrates local aspirations with broader national goals, utilizing participatory approaches to foster reconciliation and long-term stability. Lessons from Aceh and South Ireland underscore the need for transformative justice frameworks that prioritize structural change and community empowerment. This research contributes a comprehensive framework for addressing Papua's unique challenges by combining theoretical insights and practical lessons, advocating for policies that balance national unity with local self-determination. It calls for state and community collaboration to promote inclusivity, accountability, and sustainable peace in Papua.
