This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with an approach using the analysis of language semiotics from the perspective of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics theory. 5 ghost stories published by the Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad newspaper in 1936-1939 were used as corpus. You can see ghost signs that appear using the senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell. No sign was found that uses the sense of taste as a receptor. However, it does not rule out the sense of taste as a receptor to appear in other short stories. There is only one short story that shows that something that is seen by a character is really a ghost that is "’ n griezelige nacht "Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad Wednesday edition, October 14, 1936.

Abstract

Larousse is one of the most important and widely used French-language dictionaries. Larousse dictionary annually releases its new edition with the addition of on average 150 new words due to the appearance of new words, known as the phenomenon of neologism. The aim of this study is to identify how new words or neologisms in the Larousse dictionary edition of 2018 and 2019 were formed using a morphological approach. The analysis essentially uses the combination of theories of Lehmann & Martin-Berthet (1999) and Grevisse, M., & Goosse, A. (2007) on four types of word formation: derivation, composition, siglaison (acronym), and troncation (clipping). Neologisms are often influenced by foreign languages, therefore additional theory on borrowing words from other languages and lending factors introduced by Haspelmath & Tadmor (2009) is also used. Data was collected from Larousse dictionary’s digital press kit, served to promote their latest edition, and contains the new words added in the dictionary. The study indicates that the new words in the Larousse edition of 2018 and 2019 can be categorized into two groups: (1) the first group of neologisms that are formed by the process of word-formation and (2) the neologisms that are formed through loan words. Composition dominates the process of neologisms, followed by derivation. This relates to the difficulty of composition’s formation that is considered less complicated in terms of grammar compared with derivation. Then, clipping is only found in the second group of new words. An interesting finding is that based on data analysis there is a type of word formation with nom propre (proper noun) as a base word which has not been discussed by Lehmann & Martin-Berthet or Grevisse in their theory.

Abstract

Shen Congwen (1902-1988) is a modern Chinese author and poet who is known for his native-soil literature (xiangtu wenxue). The short story The Husband (Zhangfu, 1930) is one of his works in native-soil literature. It tells a story about the character “Husband” who lived as a peasant in the barren and poor Huang Village. Like other husbands in the village, he sent his wife to work in the city to improve the family finances. At the end of the story, the character “Husband” decided to take his wife home to the village after he witnessed firsthand the life in the city and how his wife worked. This study examines how Shen Congwen discussed rural poverty and its impact on Huang Village. This study uses an intrinsic approach that focuses on the description of the social situation and the characterization presented by Shen in the short story. It is then strengthened with the description of the social condition happening in China outside of the literary works. The study finds that the main problem that caused the husbands to send their wives to work in the city is poverty and their desire to improve family finances. The root cause of the poverty is the barren village land and the tax to be paid by the villagers for the upper class. Shen sympathized with the villagers by telling the story of “Husband” and the events happening in the short story to reveal the disarray in 1930’s China.

Abstract

This study is aimed to examine seven selected allegories of Āryaśūra’s Jātakamālā engraved in Candi Borobudur, to analyze the multiple aspects of the six perfections (pāramitās) exemplified in them and how these perfections are applied in day-to-day life. The literature study involved data collection triangulation to determine the extant Jātakamālā and pāramitā texts closest to the sources. Content analysis on the Jātakamālā texts and observation of its corresponding reliefs were carried out to identify the message and substantial points of each allegory. Both the actions and the motivation driving the character to perform such actions are considered. Using thematic analysis, the actions performed are categorized and correlated with the definition and meaning of each pāramitā. The results of the research indicate that although emphasis may be placed more on a particular perfection, multiple aspects of the perfections are presented in each allegory. The practice of the six perfections which to be cultivated jointly by those walking the path to Perfect Awakening also represent the universal values of generosity, non-harmfulness, tolerance, joyous effort, vigilance, and wisdom. This study allows one to see Borobudur’s carved reliefs in a way, which will hopefully engender appreciation for the cultural heritages of our ancestors.

Abstract

This study examines how working mothers negotiate her gender role and strategize in facing the condition when domestic and public sphere exist in one space called home after the outbreak COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The research questions are ” how far does working from home give an impact in changing patriarchal gender relation and distribution of work division at home?”, and “to what extends women modify their home functions in coping with COVID 19 pandemic condition and in minimizing patriarchal authority at their own home?” The research uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and questioner filling, and focuses on samples of 30 middle class working women, living in Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) area. This study argues that as the impact of Covid pandemic condition, the middle class working mothers, who have been “forced to go back” to their homes, seemingly, use their homes as “struggling places” to renegotiate the old patriarchal role divisions and unequal gender/power relations. Moreover, it is argued that their homes, to some extends, are used as learning sites for gender equality values, and modified to fulfill their extended functions: as domestic, work, and social spheres.

Abstract

Slang is a language that is used daily and continues to grow due to the development of social media among fan communities. Each fan community has used slang specific to their interests, one of them being the K-Pop fandom. Despite the international growth of the K-Pop fandom and the spread of its cultural influence over recent years, there has been a lack of discussion on the linguistic aspect of its community, on the slang generated and used by its fan community in particular. Therefore, this research aims to expound on how K-Pop fandom slang words found in the drama ‘Her Private Life’ are formed. The study based its theoretical framework on the National Institute of Korean Language’s (2014) classification of new words in Korean based on its word-formation process. Out of the 24 slang words analyzed from the drama ‘Her Private Life’, there are 3 slang words in the form of a single word and 21 slang words in the form of a complex word. In the case of single-word form slang words, all 3 are created through the borrowing process; while complex-word form slang words are mostly created through the blending process, equating to 9 words in total.

Abstract

The perfection of life in Javanese society is an achievement when the personal life and God have become one. The concept is usually found in literary works that have a mystical aspect, such as a song called Ingsun by Sujiwo Tejo. For connoisseurs of the song ingsun, the song has a meaning of divinity. This study aims to describe the aspects of perfection in life contained in the lyrics of the song. The study used a qualitative method with interpretive analysis from the perspective of Javanese belief. Based on the discussion kasampurnaning urip or perfection of life in the lyrics of the song Ingsun by Sujiwo Tejo is the ultimate goal of human life. This was achieved by always being aware of two important aspects, namely sangkan paraning dumadi and manunggaling Gusti servants. Manunggaling Kawula Gusti stage is done by restoring the awareness that the place of man to lean on is only to Gusti or God in him in the form of love and affection, namely God as Ar Rahman and Ar Rahkim. With these findings, it can be concluded that humans who have attained kasampurnaning urip always nurture their love for their fellow-creatures and God.

Abstract

Nowadays, the soccer world has been developing rapidly, particularly in Europe. In one of its countries, England, there are two notable soccer clubs that are worth discussing. They are Liverpool Football Club and Manchester United Football Club. These clubs have a considerable number of fans among all around the world. Also, they have anthems that are often sung by the fans. Their anthems are “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Glory Glory Man United.” These anthems are important because they give impacts both on the teams and on the fans. This study specifically discusses the underlying meanings within both anthems. They are revealed through the words, phrases, and sentences in the lyrics of the anthems. To do so, library research method is used. Interestingly, this study has found that associative meaning and figurative language are used frequently by songwriters to aestheticize words, phrases, and sentences used to express their aims. Therefore, it can be inferred that anthems are not only used for showing the identity of a soccer club, but also for giving support towards the home teams, yet become pressure towards the opposition teams at the same time.
