Abstract

This paper examines the national narrative presented in the biographical film Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka (2014). The analysis employs a film studies approach to explore the interplay between visual and narrative strategies within the framework of Eisenstein's theoretical perspectives. Christian Metz's semiotic theory is utilized to decode the signs embedded throughout the film. The study focuses on the visual and narrative strategies employed in the biopic to elucidate the national narrative, particularly through the portrayal of the character Soekarno and his interactions with other key figures. Visual strategies, encompassing cinematography and mise-en-scene techniques, bring to light signs that are intricately linked to national narratives. Simultaneously, the narrative strategy reinforces the coherence of this narrative through pivotal plot points in the film's storyline. In this biopic, audio is construed as an underpinning element that enhances the information and meaning already conveyed through the visuals. The holistic analysis of visual, narrative, and auditory components provides a comprehensive understanding of how the national narrative is constructed and conveyed in Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka.

Abstract

Indonesia has been chosen to host the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022. Indonesia has prepared many agendas ahead of the execution of this summit. Furthermore, Indonesia needs help hosting the G20 due to the fractured multilateral relations of several G20 member countries caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict in early 2022. As a result, Indonesia must mediate between the disputing parties to resolve this issue by selecting appropriate communication methods. Cultural diplomacy is one approach. Furthermore, this research aims to determine how Indonesia's cultural diplomacy can ensure the continuity of the G20 2022 Indonesia implementation and realization of its agendas. This research aims to solve problems and challenges before and after the G20 2022. This research addresses issues and challenges before and after the G20 2022 meeting. This study employs mixed methods to investigate the relationship or contradiction between qualitative and quantitative variables in research data sources. According to the findings of this study, cultural diplomacy can address the challenges of implementing the G20 2022 and provide projections of possible global conditions after the conference.

The writers use descriptive qualitative library research in the field of philosophy to show meaning and objectively reveal philosophical essence. This method includes collecting and analyzing criticism of relevant literature related to multiculturalism, philosophy, journalistic ethics, and cyber media reporting. The result shows that the development of the internet technology has changed the way society live, and it has affected their preferences towards the elements of mass communication. This media ecological evolution happens worldwide, including in Indonesia. The internet technology, in its various forms, has determined how society communicate interpersonally, among groups, and as a mass. By integrating the values of Pancasila into the inclusive journalistic practices, the media can serve as an agent that strengthens multiculturalism awareness, encourages unity, and promotes equality and fairness for all citizens. Through reporting that highlights respect, unity, and equality, the media can contribute positively to a strong, united, and civilized society, while at the same time strengthening the social bonding among citizens. The Active Tolerance Principal has created a framework that ensures that journalism not only avoids harming certain groups of people through biased news coverage, but can also attempt to reinforce understanding, dialogs, and peace among different groups which is a crucial step in creating a responsible and inclusive journalism which is also oriented towards the public interest.

Abstract

Both Thailand and Laos are predominantly Buddhist countries, following Theravada Buddhism. Influenced by Indian Buddhism, both countries celebrate several similar festivals, such as Songkran, Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Vixakha Souvana. Among all these celebrations, Songkran is considered the most lively, and this is the focus of this article. The article compares and analyzes the culture of Songkran in Laos and Thailand, including the festival's themes, cultural significance, and activities, to highlight the similarities and differences between the two. The cultural significance found in the Water Festival primarily stems from Indian cultural influences, while the differences in meaning are attributed to the adoption of Hindu culture after it entered Thailand and Laos. In the process of integration with local culture, the festival forms a unique cultural significance. By comparing the same festival, this article reveals differences and similarities in their cultural meanings, enhancing understanding of both cultures and contributing to friendly cultural exchange between the two countries.

Abstract

This paper investigated the propaganda strategies in kamishibai (a paper play) story telling in Djawa Baroe Magazine. This study employed text analysis methods and propaganda theories from Jowett and Donnell on the seven kamishibai and found the following propaganda strategies. First, Western powers were portrayed negatively. Second, Japan was not explicitly featured in kamishibai stories. Third, local cultural elements in Javanese culture were used to convey propaganda messages. These findings indicate that entertainment media, such as kamishibai, can be used as propaganda media and subtly inserted using specific trivial strategies.

Analysis of this paper uses the consumerist society theory by Jean Baudrillard (1986) to explain how the company creates simulacra and hyperreality of BTS as their marketing strategy. Another theory is Jenkins (2012), which states that a prosumer fan culture is used to analyze the fan's resistance to consumerism from the fandom's point of view. This article has several main findings. Big Hit Entertainment uses the creation of hyperreality to make BTS engage with the fans and stimulate consumption. Indonesian fans are doing presumption as a resistance to being submissive customers of Big Hit Entertainment, but in the end, helping it opens a new potential market.

Abstract

The Yogyakarta Palace is one of the Islamic sultanates that still exists in Indonesia. Even though the Yogyakarta Palace has an Islamic style and has been influenced by modernization which has penetrated aspects of state and society, the embodiment of the God-King concept from ancient Hindu eras remains embedded in the power of the king, state life, and the obedience of the surrounding community to the palace system. This paper has a problem regarding how to apply the concept of politics and power in the Yogyakarta Palace. A historical approach is used to reveal the meaning of the palace in the concept of kingly power and government as well as the cosmic role of the king in the state administration system at the Yogyakarta Palace. The research results show that the sultan as a government leader is also a spiritual leader, which is then depicted in a capital city that is a magical center that signifies harmony between the creator, government/spiritual leaders, and society.
