Abstract

The cultural elements in illustration are not a new phenomenon in the art world; symbolism and cultural values have long been integral to fine arts, culture, and visual arts. Even renowned animation studios like Disney Pixar consistently adopt this approach by incorporating cultural diversity from various countries into their animated works. For instance, in their latest animation, "Turning Red," they draw inspiration from Chinese culture as a primary element in its narrative and visualization. In this context, Immanuel Elizabeth, a student from Bandung Institute of Technology, has successfully crafted an illustrative work in the form of an official poster for the film. This research aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the symbolic cultural elements in Immanuel Elizabeth's illustrative work, considering its relevance to the film's context and poster design. How do the Chinese cultural elements present in the poster interact with the story or message intended by the film "Turning Red"? Additionally, the research investigates public responses to the artwork. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of the cultural relevance in visual arts and how art can serve as a means to convey cultural messages and strengthen cultural understanding among the public. These findings can serve as a reference for researchers and academics interested in the relationship between art and culture.

Abstract

Madurese traditional clothing is a rich cultural heritage from the island of Madura, Indonesia, which not only reflects the identity of the community, but also the social and cultural values passed down from generation to generation. These clothes, which are generally made from brightly colored fabrics with unique motifs, play an important role in various traditional events and cultural celebrations. This research aims to explore the history, social meaning and development of pesana clothes in a modern context. The research method uses a qualitative approach with observation techniques, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to analyze the symbolic meaning of this traditional clothing. The research results show that ordered clothes not only function as cultural identity, but also contain deep meaning related to the character of the Madurese people. Each design element, such as color and motif, has a certain symbolism that reflects boldness and simplicity. In addition, ordered clothes are often worn at formal events and reflect the social status of the wearer. The transformation of the pesana shirt in a social and economic context shows its adaptability while still maintaining traditional values. It is hoped that this research can encourage the younger generation to preserve the rich culture of Madura in the modern era.

Abstract

The creative industry of recycled crafts is growing and innovating as an effort to reduce environmental pollution. One of the creative industries in this field is Salam Rancage. Salam Rancage processes newspaper waste into products of economic value. However, this creative industry faces various challenges, such as market competition and the availability of raw materials. The challenges affects business sustainability and hinder the production process. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the strategies of Salam Rancage in maintaining its existence based on Michael A. The research method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that Salam Rancage has implemented all aspects of Competitive Strategy as follows: (1) Cost Leadership is achieved by utilizing environmentally friendly raw materials sourced from waste banks, (2) Differentiation is achieved by differentiating the materials used in product creation, (3) Innovation is carried out through regular exhibitions and market research, (4) Growth is achieved by organizing sewing and cloth mask-making training to maintain its presence in society, and (5) Alliance is formed through collaborations with the government and the women weavers. Based on the Craft Aesthetics theory analysis, Salam Rancage has applied form follows function, creative coloring, contextual function, and economic efficiency. However, Salam Rancage has not yet applied ornamental aspects to the handicrafts produced.

Abstract

The phenomenon of paternal parenting highlights the important role of fathers in balanced and developmentally appropriate parenting. However, in the modern era this role is often overlooked, leading to many children growing up fatherless, which impacts emotional closeness, trust and the potential for juvenile delinquency. In contrast, father involvement directly contributes to a child's physical and emotional development as well as boosting self-confidence. Gabriel Putu Dedi's Comic Frame depicts the role of fathers in parenting through silent comics. This study analyses the depiction of fatherhood using qualitative methods with Kress & van Leeuwen's visual system and metafunction analysis techniques, which include representation structure, interaction, and composition. The results explore the creator's depiction of fatherhood through visual elements in parenting scenes in episodes 7, 9, and 10.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of Bali’s local wisdom, Rwa Bhineda, in a 2D animated Jagadhita as a reflection of self-acceptance among Generation Z. Rwa Bhineda illustrates the duality of opposing yet complementary forces in life, as depicted through Barong and Rangda. This animation highlights how the concept of balance is applied to teenagers' lives, particularly in facing social pressures and identity-seeking challenges. The research employs the practice-based research method, integrating visual and narrative exploration through observations, expert interviews, and audience testing with Generation Z teenagers. The findings indicate that this animation effectively conveys the philosophy of Rwa Bhineda in a way that is both understandable and relevant to the psychological struggles of today’s youth. Thus, this work has the potential to serve as an effective educational medium in introducing cultural values while fostering self-acceptance in Generation Z.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the role of murals at Tugu Tunas as a visual communication medium in public spaces, which is unique because it is applied to the surface of a monument, differing from most murals that are usually found on building walls. This study aims to analyze visual communication and its relevance to art education in the murals at Tugu Tunas, Semarang City. The method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data was collected through field observations and interviews with various informants and validated through three stages of phenomenological validation. The results show that the mural at Tugu Tunas aims to visually represent Semarang's local culture. Through a semiotic study, the message conveyed in this mural aligns with the concept translated from government and artist ideas. The artists successfully translated cultural symbols accurately, allowing the public to understand their meaning. However, communication disturbances were found, such as the limited visual field of the monument and the public's lack of understanding of the symbols used. Thus, the mural at Tugu Tunas not only holds aesthetic value but also functions as an educational medium that provides artistic insights and aesthetic experiences to the community.

Abstract

This study explores sungkun as one of the traditional clothing attributes worn by Kerinci women in Jambi Province, conceptualized as a cultural text that stitches together identity, values, and social structure through the female body. In Kerinci tradition, sungkun functions not merely as attire, but as a symbolic layer that regulates how the female body is presented, interpreted, and governed within the context of custom, spirituality, and social relations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and symbolic ethnography method, this research investigates the meanings embedded in the visual elements of sungkun and its usage in both ritual and everyday life. The findings reveal that sungkun serves as a performative medium that constructs the identity of women as moral guardians, custodians of tradition, and inheritors of cosmological values. Through a deconstructive lens, the article also reveals the transformation of sungkun’s meaning in contemporary cultural landscapes, as it undergoes resemanticization through performing arts, cultural festivals, and visual media. Thus, sungkun becomes a space of negotiation between traditional heritage and modern identity expression among Kerinci women. This article contributes to the fields of art, culture, and gender studies by offering a renewed reading of textile artifacts as symbolic texts and the body as a narrative medium.
