Abstract

This study explores the role of language and communication in English literature, focusing on how words influence meaning, shape perspectives, and express cultural values. The primary objectives are to analyze the communicative power of language in selected literary works, examining how stylistic and rhetorical devices are employed to evoke emotions, construct identities, and convey ideologies. The study utilizes a qualitative approach, employing textual analysis as the method of data collection. Literary texts, including poems and essays, were analyzed to investigate the interplay between language, discourse, and communication. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was applied to assess the socio-cultural and ideological dimensions embedded within these texts. The findings reveal that language in English literature serves as a powerful tool for social influence, resistance, and identity formation. The study concludes that understanding the communicative power of words is essential in deciphering the deeper meanings and societal impacts conveyed through literature.

Abstract

The study investigates public comments and reactions on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, focusing on the mixed responses generated on Twitter. The aim is to explore how the late monarch’s life, reign, and legacy are perceived and discussed, considering both truth and misinformation. Drawing from Agenda Setting and Framing theories, the research examines select public comments using hashtags like #QueenElizabethdead, #QueenElizabethII, and #QueenElizabeth. A mixed-method content analysis was employed, identifying themes based on attributes such as Type of Social Media, Source of Story, Frame of Story, and Tone of Story. The results reveal varying public sentiments, ranging from reverence to critique, highlighting polarized perspectives on the monarch’s legacy. These findings contribute to ongoing philosophical debates regarding the nature of truth, the portrayal of legacy, and the societal impact of prominent figures at death. The study concludes that the discourse surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s death reflects deeper social tensions and provides insights into the role of framing and agenda-setting in shaping public opinion on prominent historical figures.

Abstract

Researchers often use a mixture of qualitative and quantitative approaches drawn from various fields. It is possible to record or quantify quantitative data. Qualitative data are descriptive, linguistically related, and rely on interpretation. Quantitative data provides information such as how many, how much, or how often something occurs. On the other hand, qualitative data could assist us in comprehending the processes, causes, and occurrences of activities. Each approach has many advantages as well as some disadvantages. This research aims to evaluate the various language testing and assessment approaches and compare and contrast their benefits and drawbacks. These advantages included the opportunity to learn more about the development, administration, and interpretation of assessments and tests and the capability to research test-takers behavior, perceptions, attitudes, and understanding. The study's findings showed that the amount of time required gathering data using quantitative research techniques is much less than the amount of time required collecting data using qualitative research methods. Quantitative research methods, on the other hand, have several drawbacks, such as the difficulty of explicating what a researcher means when using a specific word and the fact that these methods can only provide an overarching comprehension of the topic being studied

Abstract

This study explores the morphological process in the Javanese language where numerical phrases are transformed into verbs through the addition of the prefix "N-." This process is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also deeply rooted in Javanese culture and socio-religious practices. The urgency of this study lies in documenting and analysing how these transformations reflect cultural traditions, particularly the ceremonial practices observed after specific days following someone's death, such as the third, seventh, fortieth, one hundredth, and one-thousandth days. A review of previous studies shows a lack of focus on the intersection of language, culture, and religion in the transformation of numerical phrases into verbs. This study fills this gap by examining the specific phrases "telung dina" (three days), "pitung dina" (seven days), "patang puluh dina" (forty days), "satus" (one hundred), and "sewu" (one thousand), which are culturally significant in Javanese rituals, and their transformation into verbs such as "nelung dina," "mitung dina," "matang puluh dina," "nyatus," and "nyewu." The analysis demonstrates that the prefix "N-" not only verbalizes these phrases but also embodies the cultural significance of the corresponding periods, turning static expressions into action-oriented verbs that imply ceremonial activities. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of this morphological process in understanding how the Javanese language encapsulates cultural values and practices, offering new insights into the relationship between language, culture, and religion in Austronesian linguistics.

Abstract

This study examines the perspectives of Begum Rokeya and Arundhati Roy on women's emancipation, analysing their literary contributions to the discourse on gender equality. The objective is to compare their views on women's freedom and assess how their works reflect and critique contemporary societal conditions. While both authors have passionately advocated for women's liberation, their ideas have not been thoroughly analysed in relation to the present-day struggles of women. This review seeks to bridge that gap by critically evaluating their works in the context of ongoing gender inequalities. The study adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing a comparative textual analysis of Begum Rokeya’s Sultana’s Dream and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things as primary sources. Relevant scholarly articles and feminist theoretical frameworks supplement the analysis, providing a broader understanding of their perspectives on women's rights. Findings reveal that Begum Rokeya’s visionary advocacy for women’s independence, as portrayed in Sultana’s Dream, remains largely unrealized in contemporary society. Despite her utopian vision of a world where women hold power, gender-based oppression persists. Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things further highlights the entrenched patriarchal structures and socio-cultural barriers that continue to limit women's autonomy. The comparative analysis underscores the enduring challenges women face and the necessity for sustained efforts toward gender equality. By juxtaposing the works of these two influential authors, this study emphasizes the persistent struggles for women’s rights and the ongoing need for advocacy and reform. The insights drawn from their literary contributions reinforce the urgency of addressing gender disparities and striving for a more equitable society.

Abstract

- This study explores the intricate relationship between journalism and contemporary socio-political conflicts, focusing on the challenges journalists encounter when covering such issues. The study aims to analyze the ethical, physical, and economic difficulties faced by journalists, particularly in conflict-prone environments. It examines the role of journalism in shaping public discourse, the influence of political and economic interests on media narratives, and the rise of alternative news sources such as citizen journalism. Grounded in the theoretical framework of Peace Journalism, the study emphasizes ethical reporting practices that prioritize accuracy, fairness, and dialogue over sensationalism. A qualitative descriptive research method is employed, utilizing document analysis of scholarly literature, media reports, and relevant records to investigate media ethics and journalistic practices in multicultural Nigeria. The analysis highlights the complex interplay between media institutions, political forces, and public perception in conflict reporting. Findings reveal that journalists face significant risks, including threats to their physical safety, pressures from political and corporate entities, and ethical dilemmas in reporting sensitive issues. Additionally, social-political conflicts influence media polarization, alter news consumption patterns, and amplify the role of digital platforms in shaping public opinion. The study underscores the growing impact of citizen journalism, which challenges traditional media narratives but also raises concerns regarding misinformation. To address these challenges, the study proposes several recommendations, including strengthening press freedom, enhancing journalist training programs, enforcing ethical guidelines, promoting peace journalism initiatives, and fostering cross-border media collaboration. Furthermore, the study advocates for public awareness campaigns, investment in conflict reporting, and continuous research to monitor media trends. By implementing these measures, journalism can contribute more effectively to conflict resolution and democratic stability.

Abstract

This research investigates the impediments faced by Nigerian journalists in upholding press freedom. Employing a mixed-methods approach that incorporates scholarly literature, legal documents, and media reports, the study identifies both legal and extra-legal challenges journalists encounter. Hinge on Libertarian Media Theory, these challenges include restrictive legislation, political influence, economic hardship, societal prejudices, safety concerns, self-censorship, and threats to media autonomy. Methodologically, the paper used a mixed-methods approach, combining analysis of scholarly literature, legal documents, and media reports with in-depth interviews with NUJ members. The interviews explored journalists' experiences with legal and extra-legal challenges, and the data were analyzed to identify themes. The research also explores the Nigerian Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) role in supporting journalists and press freedom. Findings from in-depth interviews with NUJ members reveal the significant impact of these constraints on media professionals. The study concludes with a call for increased engagement and proactive measures to address the systemic issues undermining press freedom in Nigeria. Among the recommendations, the research emphasizes the need for legislative reforms to revise or repeal outdated laws that restrict free expression. This effort should involve collaboration between government officials, legal experts, and civil society organizations to ensure alignment with international standards.
