Abstract

The main objective of this study was to compare the ability of EFL learners to understand texts by using Think, Predict, Read, and Connect (TPRC) strategy and Predict, Locate, Add, and Note (PLAN) strategy. The research was a comparative experimental with quantitative method. The subject of the research was the students majoring in Accounting Level I at Language Development Center of UIN Suska Riau in the academic year of 2016/2017. The object of the research was the comparison of students' ability to understand English texts using TPRC strategy and PLAN strategy. Cluster sampling technique was employed to determine the sample of the study. Two classes consisting of 50 students were taken as the sample which was divided into experimental group 1 and the experimental group 2. A pre-test and a post-test were given to both the experimental group 1 and the experimental group 2. Independent t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The results showed that there was a significant difference of the value of students' reading post-test between the experimental group 1 taught using TPRC and experimental group 2 taught using PLAN. The result of T-test was 2.91, df 48, the SD of the experimental group 1 was 10.57 and the experimental group 2 was 7.88. It was discovered that p = 0.005, two tailed value of less than 0.05 (p <0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It was also proven that TPRC reading strategy contributed to the enhancement of students' reading comprehension by 32% and PLAN contributed as much as 58%. Therefore, it could be concluded that PLAN strategy gave better results than TPRC strategy

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of using Exit Slips on learners' writing ability and reading comprehension improvement through deep investigation on its effect and the extent of its effect on both language skills by applying Quasi-Experimental research (pretest and post-test design) at an Islamic university’s language center (LC). Based on their similar characteristics, two EFL level II classrooms containing 60 learners were selected as sample. Furthermore, they were assigned to the experimental and the control group. In collecting the data, writing and reading tests, observations, and interviews were utilized to assess participants’ abilities prior to and after the treatment. In analyzing the data, the t-tests (paired and independent sample) were run in SPSS. In addition, Cohen D formula was applied to determine the effect size. The results demonstrated that students of the experimental group outperformed the control group after the treatment (p<0.05). In addition, the values of effect size obtained, writing (1.8) and reading (1.9), were categorized into strong effect size. Thus, Exit slip had significantly affected students’ writing ability and reading comprehension strongly to the extent that average students in the experimental group improved their ability of these two skills to match the student ranked first in the control group. It was due to exposure to summarization and paraphrasing, students’ motivation, and teacher’s creativity and feedback provided by the practice of Exit slip that affected students’ improvement. However, there was little evidence to conclude that which of the three mentioned factors in the practice of Exit slip dominantly affected the students’ improvement.

Finally, it was found out that the significance values were 0.000 and 0.000 for both skills respectably and they were smaller than the probability value, p (0.005). In addition to the effect size obtained (writing: 0.5 and reading: 0.5), it was inferred that CLT through small group discussion had significantly affected students’ skills in writing and reading comprehension to the extent that average students in the experimental group improve their both skills ability similar to big five students in the control group.
