Speaking is one of the skills that must be mastered in English. The ability to speak in English is a person's skill in conveying his desires and thoughts to anyone orally. But in reality speaking is a language skill that has many obstacles that are often faced including mental, lack of ideas, embarrassment when speaking, fear of criticism, and many more. Therefore, the task of teachers in school is not only to convey material but also to try to motivate students to improve their language skills, especially speaking. In collecting the information, this study uses a literature review research method, namely by collecting some data that is in accordance with the problems to be discussed through previous research that has been published in online journals, both national and international journals. In learning a language, we must use appropriate and interesting techniques & media for learning so that students enjoy learning English. One of the media that can be used in the teaching and learning process is music and movies. By using the film, students will get to know new vocabulary and then they will record the new vocabulary in the film. Then they can speak in front of the class to retell the contents of the film briefly, convey the moral message contained in the film and explain the meaning of the moral message contained in the film.

Abstract

Proficiency in English is also measured by listening skills. If we have good listening skills, communication using English will also be smoother. People who have the ability to listen are now a plus in itself. Basically, there are four important aspects in English that we must always understand, one of which is listening. Every person in understanding the four concepts always has a different level of difficulty. The obstacles that often occur in understanding this are not entirely our fault, but because of the selection and use of learning methods that are less attractive. Or the methods we use are too monotonous and boring, so we don't get the real essence of learning English. Therefore, we need the most effective learning methods. In this millennial era, the most alternative way to improve the quality of listening is by listening to music and watching video. Music is an easy habit, when we listen to music we don't need to spend a lot of time because music can be taken anywhere. We can play songs in the car, kitchen and bedroom. By choosing the music we like, we can listen to the same material over and over again without getting bored. Watching English videos has become a recommendation for many people. To improve Listening ability, it is considered effective because the three-dimensional media is easily accessible, not boring, and has a unique appeal.

Abstract

The internet has offered numerous opportunities for educational content delivery. The main current delivery models for learning a language online range from more formal structured approaches provided by schools and universities, which typically take place in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or Learning Management System (LMS), to more informal unstructured approaches, including Virtual Worlds like Second Life and Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) like World of Warcraft. The purpose of this study is to analyse the experiences and perceptions of the online digital tools that provide engagement with the English language outside the classroom by the non-linguist students at an Islamic University in Riau province, Indonesia. The study is based on the quantitative and qualitative data collected employing an online questionnaire including Likert-type ratings, multiple-choice questions, and free-text responses to open questions. The questionnaire inquiries about students’ experiences with 17 technologies not related to their classroom activities, how frequently they are used, how helpful the students find them for their language acquisition in general, and how useful they are considered for the development of particular language competencies (writing, reading, speaking, listening, pronunciation, grammar, communicative competence). The results of the survey attest to regular students’ engagement with the English language involving online technologies, which leads to implications for foreign language learners, teachers, and researchers of second language acquisition for incorporating online digital tools for foreign language acquisition beyond the classroom. Being aware of how students engage with technology outside the classroom may facilitate educators in increasing learners’ engagement with the foreign language, provide additional practice, and produce an emotional response, which increases retention of information.
