Abstract

This study focuses on the loneliness that is faced by the female main character, Stella Grant, in the Five Feet Apart novel. There are two focuses in analyzing this study, the first is the causes of Stella Grant’s loneliness, and the second is the copes of Stella Grant’s loneliness. To analyze this study, the writer uses loneliness theory by Peplau & Perlman (1979 & 1981). The writer uses a psychoanalysis approach about loneliness theory. The author’s narration and also dialogue in the novel help the writer to know the causes and the copes of the loneliness that Stella Grant faced that is suitable with the theory. The causes of loneliness are physical separation, death, unemployment, and the end of the relationship. The biggest influence that causes Stella to feel lonely is due to physical separation and the death of the closest person. Physical separation makes her feel alone and abandoned. While the death of the closest person makes her lose her direction and lack the spirit of life. The copes of loneliness are adaptation, task choice, and standards for evaluating social relationships, ways of using existing relationships more fully, ways of forming new relationships, and replacement relationships. Meanwhile, the way that gives the big impact for Stella to overcome her loneliness is forming a new relationship and task choice. Forming a new relationship helps Stella to find someone new in her life so it can give a new color to her life. Then, task choice can help her be busier and forget her loneliness.

Abstract

. It is impossible to rule out the execution of the directive action while waiting for the interlocutor to perform an act. The speaker must take directive action in order to persuade the interlocutor to do something. This study is concerned with the implementation of directive speech acts and seeks to identify the various types and forms of directive speech acts. The goal of this research was to help readers understand the discussion of linguistics, particularly directive acts. The theory applied in determining the types of directive acts by Searle & Vanderveken (1985). The method used in data collection was the observation method. From the results of observations found 20 directive act utterances. The results of the research conducted on the collected data, found five types of directive acts, namely asking, ordering, forbidding, permitting, and praying. Of all these types, the type of directive that appeared the most was asking because the characters in the movie Romeo and Juliet conveyed a lot of utterances that demanded the interlocutor to provide information. On the other hand, the data showed that the type that appeared the least was praying because there were only a few prayer scene in the movie and the characters rarely pray outside that scene. The forms of directive act were interrogative, imperative, declarative.

Abstract

This study discusses the social conflict in Peter Tieryas's Mecha Samurai Empire Series. The aim of the study is to find out the reason for the causes of social conflict and their effect in the three novels and to find out the categories and types of social conflicts that appear in the story. The writer chooses the novel series because of the depiction of social conflict in the post-World War two settings where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan win the second world war. In this study, the writer uses the qualitative descriptive method and sociological literature approach. To analyse the social conflicts of the novel series, the writer uses Ralf Dahrendorf's social conflict theory. The writer finds that there are two factors why social conflict appears in the novel, the background of the conflict and the attempt of each group in each novel to become the conflict group. Aside from that, the writer finds that the categories of conflict in the United States of Japan and Mecha Samurai Empire novel are exogenous conflict while Cyber Shogun Empire is endogenous conflict. There are four types of social conflict in the story. In the United States of Japan, the type of conflict is George Washingtons against the Empire of Japan. In Mecha Samurai Empire, the type of conflict is the National Revolutionaries of America against the Empire of Japan. In Cyber Shogun Revolution, there are two types of conflict, the Sons of War against the Empire of Japan and the Bloody Mary Group against the Empire of Japan.

Descriptive qualitative method was taken in order to analyze the data, and the data was collected by using observational method which then reduced from the tweets of 2018 to 2022. As the results of the research, 85 morphemes were found that change the parts of speech of the words, including 13 suffixes that changed noun to adjective, 35 suffixes that changed verb to noun, 15 suffixes that changed adjective to adverb, 2 suffixes and 1 prefix that changed noun to verb, 11 suffixes that changed adjective to noun, and 8 suffixes that changed verb to adjective.
