Abstract

This study investigates the application of J.C. Catford's translation shifts in the Indonesian subtitles of the animated film "The Journey," a collaborative project between Japan and Saudi Arabia that depicts historical events in Mecca before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, we analyzed various linguistic units such as words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from the film's subtitles to identify structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. The primary objective was to assess how these shifts maintain semantic and syntactic integrity while ensuring the translation remains coherent and contextually appropriate. The findings reveal that structure shifts were the most frequent, accounting for 58% of the total shifts, followed by unit shifts (23%), class shifts (11%), and intra-system shifts (9%). These shifts were essential in adapting the subtitles to the grammatical and cultural norms of the target language (TL). The study contributes to the field of translation studies by providing practical insights and guidelines for translators, emphasizing the importance of using appropriate translation techniques to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps. Ultimately, the research enhances understanding and appreciation of translated animated films among diverse audiences.

Abstract

In Qur’anic linguistic studies, pragmatic aspects such as deixis are often overlooked in favor of phonological or syntactic features, despite their vital role in shaping meaning and divine messages. This study is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to analyze the use of personal, temporal, and spatial deixis in Surah Yusuf. The approach employed is pragmatic, drawing on Levinson’s theory of deixis, combined with Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. Data were collected through documentation of the text of Surah Yusuf in the Qur’anic manuscript. The data analysis technique involved qualitative interpretation by identifying and categorizing types of deixis and uncovering the social and ideological meanings behind their use. The findings reveal that deixis in divine revelation is not merely linguistic but functions as a tool for constructing identity, social legitimacy, and spiritual transformation. Personal deixis reflects shifts in status and power relations; temporal deixis shapes the narrative chronology; and spatial deixis emphasizes the significance of movement and alienation. Thus, Surah Yusuf demonstrates how revelation conveys divine messages through linguistically and socially meaningful structures.

Abstract

Deixis plays a crucial role in literary discourse by linking language to its narrative and social context. Despite its significance, pragmatic studies on deixis in Arabic literary texts remain limited. This study aims to analyze the use of deixis in the Arabic short story Al-Istighāthah by Zakaria Tamer using Yule’s (1996) theory. The research focuses on identifying and interpreting three types of deixis—personal, temporal, and spatial—and how they function within the narrative. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with contextual analysis, the data were derived from selected excerpts of the short story. The findings reveal that personal deixis clarifies character roles and relationships through pronoun usage, temporal deixis constructs the chronological framework via expressions such as al-ān and past-tense verbs, while spatial deixis situates events using references like bi-al-qurbi minhumā and fawqa arḍi Maysalūn. These deixis types do not merely serve referential functions but also reflect the emotional, social, and historical dimensions of the text. This study contributes to the pragmatic-stylistic analysis of Arabic literary works by highlighting how deixis shapes meaning and narrative engagement within a culturally loaded context.
AN ANALYSIS OF INTERROGATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN THE SHORT STORY 'MAHFAZHAH' FROM THE COLLECTION 'ISN’T THAT SO?' BY YUSUF IDRIS: A SEMIOTIC STUDY BASED ON MICHAEL RIFFATERRE'S THEORY: TAḤLĪL AL-ISTIFHĀM FĪ AL-QIṢṢAH AL-QAṢĪRAH "MAḤFAẒAH" MIN AL-MAJMŪ‘AH AL-QIṢAṢIYYAH "A-LAYSA KA-DHĀLIK" LI-YŪSUF IDRĪS (DIRĀSAH SĪMĀ’IYYAH BI-MANHAJ MICHAEL RIFFATERRE) Riza, Ali; Munir, Dede Rizal

Abstract

This study aims to explore the function and semantic role of interrogative expressions in Yusuf Idris’s short story Mahfazhah, through the lens of Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory. The research investigates how these linguistic tools shift from simple interrogatives into rhetorical devices that convey psychological, social, and philosophical dimensions, thereby deepening textual interpretation and revealing hidden meanings. A qualitative descriptive method is employed, specifically content analysis. Interrogative sentences are extracted and categorized according to their types, then analyzed using Riffaterre’s semiotic concepts to uncover the subtextual meanings embedded within the narrative structure and cultural context. The findings reveal that interrogatives such as “mā” and “limādhā” reflect internal confusion; “hal” and the hamzah interrogative express existential alienation; “kayfa” and “ayna” portray economic hardship; while “man” and “ayy” articulate identity struggles and individual-society tension. Thus, interrogatives in the text become central rhetorical elements charged with symbolic and interpretive depth. This research contributes to the applied understanding of Riffaterre’s semiotics and offers an analytical model for interpreting short stories through a semiotic perspective. It supports scholars and students of Arabic literature in uncovering deeper textual meanings within a rigorous scientific framework.

Abstract

This study investigates the relational semantics of the word nafaṡa as found in QS. al-Falaq: 4, using Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic theory to uncover the conceptual and ideological framework embedded in Qur’anic discourse. Through a qualitative-descriptive method and close textual analysis, the research explores the lexical, syntactic, and contextual dimensions of nafaṡa, highlighting its function as more than a physical act of ‘blowing.’ The analysis reveals that nafaṡa serves as a semantic node within a network of oppositional concepts—namely al-syarr (evil), al-‘uqad (knots, internal constraints), and al-taḥṣīn (divine safeguarding)—forming part of the Qur’an’s spiritual cosmology. Far from being merely a linguistic unit, nafaṡa symbolizes a latent metaphysical threat that operates within the Qur’anic worldview and necessitates divine protection. The study contributes to Qur’anic linguistic scholarship by demonstrating how a single lexical item can encode complex ethical, psychological, and theological meanings when analyzed through relational semantics.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of speech acts in digital news discourse through an analytical examination of selected posts from the Arabic-language Instagram page of Al-Jazeera. Drawing on the theoretical framework of speech act theory as developed by Austin (1962) and Searle (1969), the research aims to identify the types and pragmatic functions of speech acts employed in visual-verbal posts related to political and social events. Using a descriptive-analytical method and qualitative content analysis, this study reveals that Al-Jazeera's Instagram posts do not merely perform an informative function; rather, they utilize a variety of speech act types—including assertives, directives, expressives, commissives, and declaratives—to construct meaning, influence perception, and guide public sentiment. The analysis highlights the strategic deployment of language in digital Arabic media to serve communicative intentions beyond mere news reporting. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how language operates as a pragmatic tool in shaping digital public discourse within Arabic media contexts.
