Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the competencies that a counselor must have in an effort to handle cultural differences between clients and counselors in a counseling process. Where the counselor and counselee hope that the counseling process will run smoothly and get results regarding the handling of the problem being addressed. The writing method in this article uses the concept of literature review technique. It was found in the literature review that there is a connection between culture and counseling. Culture influences several things, namely communication, characteristics, ethics, etc. In dealing with this problem counselors are required to have extensive knowledge about the culture that exists in Indonesia. The counselor is also expected to be able to make the client understand the counselor's own culture to eliminate any cultural bias between the counselee and the counselor. It is not only the counselor who deals with the client's culture, but the client is also expected to be able to understand the counselor's culture. Key Words: culture, counseling, cross-cultural.

Abstract

This study explores modality in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks, addressing a gap in prior research that emphasizes modal verbs’ frequency over their functional use. It analyzes the types and realization of modality in the Indonesian junior high school textbook English for Nusantara Grade VII using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics framework. Data, sourced from exercises, dialogues, and passages, were categorized into modalization (probability and usuality) and modulation (obligation and inclination). Findings indicate a prevalence of medium modality, with "can" and "should" frequently used, reflecting moderate obligation and possibility. The textbook prioritizes expressing ability and certainty over obligation, suggesting the need for more balanced instructional material. This study underscores the importance of integrating practical exercises that teach nuanced modality use, enhancing students' ability to communicate effectively in real-world contexts. Aligning with language's interpersonal function, such improvements could foster socially appropriate and meaningful exchanges in English. Keyword : EFL textbooks, Halliday and Matthiessen framework, Modalization, Modulation.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Visual Auditory Kinesthetic (VAK) learning style model in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP Asuhan Jaya Medan during the 2023/2024 academic year. A quantitative experimental research design was employed, involving 50 eighth-grade students divided into two groups: the experimental group (n = 25), which was taught using the VAK model, and the control group (n = 25), which received conventional instruction. Data were collected using a vocabulary test consisting of 20 items, including matching, gap-filling, and arranging tasks. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS, including normality, homogeneity, and t-tests. The findings revealed that the experimental group’s post-test mean score (M = 84.24) was significantly higher than its pre-test mean (M = 32.52), and higher than the control group’s post-test mean (M = 78.68). An independent sample t-test confirmed a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the VAK model is more effective than conventional methods in enhancing vocabulary mastery. This study highlights the importance of incorporating multisensory approaches in English language teaching to support diverse learning preferences. Keywords: Visual Auditory Kinesthetic, Learning Style Model, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

The discovery learning model is a learning strategy that encourages students to conduct observations, experiments, and scientific actions to achieve a deeper understanding. In this model, students are active in finding and understanding the concepts taught, as well as solving problems by collecting and processing data. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of HOTS-based discovery learning model on students' critical thinking skills on the material of quadrilaterals and triangles. The population in this study were grade IX students at MTs Az-Zahroh. The sample in this study were 23 students of grade IX Ibnu Khaldun (as the experimental class) and 23 students of IX Ibnu Sina (as the control class). The research method used in this study was a quasi-experimental one. The research instrument used a question validation sheet and an essay-shaped test (description) on the material of quadrilaterals and triangles. The data analysis technique used was the normality test. The research hypothesis test used the t-test, namely the independent sample t-test and the paired sample t-test with the help of the SPSS 25 application. The results of the independent sample t-test obtained a Sig. value. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, which means H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Therefore, there is a difference in the test results of students' critical thinking abilities using the HOTS-based discovery learning model and those using the conventional teacher-centered learning model. In the paired sample t-test, Sig. (2-tailed) pair 1 = 0.000 and pair 2 = 0.026, meaning the significance value is < 0.05, thus proving that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Therefore, it is clear that there is a difference in the average pretest-posttest between the experimental and control classes. Therefore, it can be concluded that the HOTS-based discovery learning model has an effect on students' critical thinking abilities, especially regarding quadrilaterals and triangles. Keywords: Influence, HOTS-Based Discovery Learning Model, Student Critical Thinking, Mathematics Learning
