Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the APEC regime during the 2018-2020 US-China trade war, focusing on APEC's capacity to address tensions using Arild Underdal's regime effectiveness theory. The aim is to provide recommendations to enhance APEC's role in managing global trade conflicts using qualitative, descriptive-analytical methods using Underdal's framework, examining dependent, independent, and intervention variables. Secondary data from credible books, journals, and articles form the basis of the analysis. APEC is struggling with structural issues, geopolitical competition, and implementation challenges. Despite the declaration, national interests dominate, limiting cohesive and impactful policies. APEC needs stronger coordination, institutional mechanisms, and inclusive leadership to enhance its effectiveness in mitigating trade conflicts. Abstract

This study aims to analyze Indonesia's strategic position in the expansion of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), which marks a shift in the global geopolitical landscape. Adopting the principle of multipolarity, BRICS seeks to establish a more inclusive and equitable global governance system. As a developing country with significant economic strength and a commitment to global cooperation, Indonesia has substantial opportunities to contribute to this transformation. This research will explore how BRICS expansion impacts Indonesia's role and position in restructuring the global geopolitical landscape. The concepts and perspectives employed include the Regional Security Complex and Polarity in International Relations. The research uses a qualitative descriptive-explanatory method, with data collected through literature review. The findings indicate that Indonesia can play a crucial role in promoting global governance reform, strengthening South-South cooperation, and balancing geopolitical dynamics. However, challenges such as the diversity of member interests, barriers to economic integration, and geopolitical tensions must be addressed. BRICS provides a strategic platform for Indonesia to expand its international influence while supporting sustainable development through initiatives like the New Development Bank. Thus, Indonesia is not merely a beneficiary but also a key actor in shaping the future of global governance. Abstract

The European Union has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia in response to various actions deemed to violate international law and threaten regional stability. However, amid the EU's efforts to maintain unity in facing Russian aggression, Hungary has taken a different stance. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Hungary has consistently opposed several EU sanctions against Russia and maintained economic and energy relations with Moscow. This stance not only creates tensions within the EU but also sparks criticism regarding Hungary's commitment to European solidarity. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors behind Hungary's opposition of EU sanctions against Russia. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach. Data is collected from various sources such as books, academic journals, newspapers, and official documents. The results show that Hungary oppose the EU's sanctions against Russia due to its high dependence on Russian gas, oil, and nuclear energy in order to maintain economic stability and energy security. This stance provides short-term economic benefits but also creates tensions with the EU. Hungary's close relationship with Russia strengthens its position within the EU but also weakens the effectiveness of sanctions against Moscow. Abstract

The military invasion by Israel against Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, has worsened the hunger crisis. This research aims to determine the role of World Central Kitchen (WCK) in addressing the hunger crisis in Gaza in 2023- 2024. This research uses Clive Archer's theory of international organisation roles to examine WCK's role in addressing the hunger crisis in Gaza. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach with secondary data sources obtained from journals, books, reports, and media news. The research results indicate that WCK has significantly fulfilled its roles as an instrument, arena, and independent actor. The WCK's first role is an instrument for humanitarian food aid programs by building community kitchens and collaborating with the governments of other countries and local organisations to distribute food. The second role is an arena, which means making the WCK organisation a workplace for workers and volunteers from all over the world. Then, the third role is as an independent actor, namely WCK is an independent organisation in terms of funding and also receives donations from other institutions without any binding interests except humanitarian ones. In addition to these roles, WCK also faces challenges, including difficulties in obtaining assistance and potential threats to the safety of its workers during humanitarian operations. Abstract

This research aims to analyze the EU Migration and Asylum Pact Reform 2024 to address the increasing challenges of migration and human smuggling. The phenomenon of global migration triggered by armed conflict, climate change, and economic inequality has encouraged the European Union to formulate more effective and sustainable migration policies. This research uses a qualitative method with a constructivist paradigm that focuses on how migration policies are shaped through social and political interactions between the actors involved. The results show that although the reform aims to create a fairer and more efficient migration system, implementation challenges remain significant. Political tensions between member states are a major obstacle, especially regarding differing views on refugee quota obligations. In addition, the readiness of the administrative infrastructure in some member states remains an obstacle to implementing this policy effectively. It can be concluded that the EU Migration and Asylum Pact Reform 2024 is a significant step towards a more structured and solidarity-based migration system. However, the EU's inability to reach a full consensus on the implementation of these reforms, mainly due to the opposition of some member states such as Poland and Hungary to migrant redistribution mechanisms, has the potential to undermine the principle of solidarity at the core of these policies. A strict migration policy could exacerbate the EU's internal fragmentation if these political differences are not resolved. Abstract

This research examines the impact of the tax holiday policy given to Apple Inc. in Indonesia on global economic growth. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to explore and understand the phenomena that occur as a result of the policy. Data is collected through analyzing related documents, such as Apple's financial statements, government reports, journal articles, and media news. The results show that the tax holiday has the potential to attract foreign investment, increase employment, and accelerate technology transfer to Indonesia. However, there are also concerns about the loss of tax revenue that the state should receive and the impact on local business competition. In addition, this study found that the policy may create unfairness for domestic companies that do not receive similar incentives. Thus, while tax holidays can boost short-term economic growth, their long-term impact on economic structure and social equity needs to be taken seriously. This research is expected to provide insights for policymakers in formulating more inclusive and sustainable investment strategies in the future. Abstract

Papua New Guinea is a developing country located in Oceania within the specifications of the Melanesian family. Papua New Guinea in the status quo condition still faces various forms of domestic problems that have an impact on internal instability conditions. Acts of unrest are still massive in this country, which has an impact on poor economic conditions and a high poverty rate targeting all levels of the population. In January 2024, the international community was shocked by the news of riots that occurred in several cities in Papua New Guinea namely Port Moresby and Lae, due to the phenomenon of unilateral salary cuts to state civil servants without any further explanation from the government. The rioting by civil servants (police, public sector staff, and other civil servants) and opportunistic parties has had a huge impact on the internal conditions of the country forcing the city into a precarious situation and this phenomenon itself is exacerbated by the vacant position of the security forces due to their participation in this action. The unrest had a huge impact and led to acts of violence, murder, and looting aimed at several shops in the corners of the city. In response, James Marape as the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea declared a national emergency for two weeks and attempted to bring in securitization measures to reduce the larger conflict that could break out at any time. Abstract

Conflict-induced immigration has long been a humanitarian crisis not only in the countries where conflicts occur, but also in neighboring countries where refugees are fleeing. The Arab Spring uprisings spread to Syria, prompting demonstrations that were responded to excessively by security forces. Armed military forces were deployed to contain the wave of protests against the government, using repressive measures that resulted in the loss of many lives. The protests quickly spread across Syria and transformed into a civil war with external parties intervening. In a dangerous conflict situation, the Syrian population began to migrate out of the country. Turkey became the main destination for refugees as a place to stay and a stopover route before going to Europe. The wave of migration caused a refugee crisis in the European Union. Finally, the European Union took a step to cooperate in handling refugees with Turkey, the refugees will be placed in Turkey, while the European Union will reconsider Turkey's membership in the organization and provide financial assistance. The end of the Ba'ath party's rule in Syria signaled the end of the prolonged civil war and paved the way for refugees to return to their home countries. This will certainly affect the cooperation between Turkey and the European Union as the refugee crisis in the country decreases. Keywords: Turkey, European Union, Refugee Crisis

Abstract

This study discusses the Indonesian government's efforts in building the nation's image through the development of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (KEK) using the nation branding hexagon approach which includes aspects of governance, people, culture and heritage, and investment and immigration. Mandalika, which has been designated as a super priority tourism destination as well as a national strategic KEK, has a crucial role in strengthening Indonesia's reputation on the international stage. The research method used is qualitative with secondary data analysis obtained from various reliable sources, such as official government documents, academic journals, and reports and releases from PT Injourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) as the manager of the Mandalika KEK. The results of the study show that transparent and professional governance in the Mandalika KEK is the main foundation in creating a conducive investment climate and supporting sustainable development. The community aspect highlights the importance of empowering local communities as cultural ambassadors and key actors in the development of the tourism sector, which contributes to improving the quality of social interaction and a positive image of Indonesia. Culture and ancestral heritage, such as the Bau Nyale Festival and traditional tourism villages, are effectively integrated into the nation branding strategy to highlight the uniqueness of Sasak culture while strengthening national identity. In addition, investment and immigration management is carried out with policies that simplify the licensing process and provide fiscal incentives, supported by international promotion and the development of world-class infrastructure, which significantly increases Mandalika's attractiveness to foreign investors. This study recommends strengthening human resource capacity, improving inclusive governance, and developing innovative cultural products to maintain the sustainability and competitiveness of Mandalika. Thus, the Mandalika Special Economic Zone not only functions as a driving force for the national economy, but also as an important part of Indonesia's nation branding strategy.
