Abstract

Increasing competition among national-plus schools has encouraged educational institutions to utilize digital promotional media to communicate their values, learning environments, and institutional identities more effectively. This study aimed to identify the semiotic modes used in the digital promotional media of Veritas Intercultural School (VIS) and Beverly School Indonesia in Badung Regency and to examine how these modes constructed institutional identity. A qualitative descriptive design was employed using Multimodal Discourse Analysis, supported by Visual Grammar and Praat-based acoustic analysis. Data were obtained from the schools’ official Instagram accounts and websites, including posts, website pages, promotional photographs, and videos, and were collected through documentation and non-participant observation. The findings showed that Instagram content from both schools integrated five semiotic modes: linguistic, visual, spatial, gestural, and aural. Website content demonstrated different combinations of modes, with VIS emphasizing visual, spatial, and gestural modes, while Beverly School Indonesia emphasized linguistic, visual, and spatial modes. These multimodal strategies reflected distinct institutional identities: VIS foregrounded intercultural, inquiry-based, and student-centered learning, whereas Beverly School Indonesia highlighted academic excellence, character development, creativity, and global readiness. The study concluded that coordinated multimodal resources strengthened educational promotional messages and helped schools communicate distinctive institutional identities to prospective parents and broader audiences within competitive educational markets.

Abstract

Mathematics learning at the junior high school level requires instructional practices that promote conceptual understanding, active participation, collaboration, and teacher reflection. Lesson Study offers a collaborative professional development approach through the Plan, Do, and See stages to improve the quality of mathematics instruction. This study aimed to describe the learning process of number concepts through Lesson Study among Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1 Pontianak. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed involving one mathematics teacher, observer teachers, and 32 Grade VII students. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and field notes, and analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed that Lesson Study supported lesson planning, active classroom participation, and reflective teaching practices. During the Do stage, 87.5% of students actively participated in group discussions, 78.1% answered teacher questions, 75.0% presented discussion results, and 90.6% completed the student worksheets. Nevertheless, several students remained passive, some groups were dominated by individual members, and difficulties persisted in solving contextual problems. The See stage enabled teachers and observers to identify these challenges and formulate improvements. In conclusion, Lesson Study fostered more collaborative, student-centered, and reflective mathematics learning while supporting continuous improvement in teaching practices.

Abstract

Courtroom communication plays a crucial role in the judicial process because legal facts are constructed through interactions among judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witnesses. Question–answer exchanges in criminal trials are not merely information-seeking activities but also involve pragmatic strategies, speech acts, and conversational principles that influence the interpretation of testimony. This study aimed to analyze question types, speech acts, and violations of conversational maxims in courtroom question–answer exchanges at the Denpasar District Court. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were obtained from the transcript of a criminal corruption trial involving witness examinations and were analyzed using Gibbons’ courtroom question typology, Searle’s speech act theory, and Grice’s Cooperative Principle. The findings revealed that courtroom questioning was dominated by restrictive question forms, particularly wh-questions and yes/no questions, which functioned to control and structure witness testimony. The analysis also showed that directives were the dominant speech acts performed by questioning parties, while witnesses primarily produced assertive acts. Furthermore, violations and non-observance of conversational maxims occurred through limited responses, expressions of uncertainty, hedging, and knowledge disclaimers, which generated specific pragmatic implications in courtroom interactions. This study concluded that courtroom discourse represented a complex interaction among linguistic structures, institutional authority, and pragmatic strategies. The findings contributed to forensic linguistics by providing an integrated understanding of how questions, speech acts, and conversational principles shaped communication in Indonesian criminal trials.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social commerce in Indonesia has established TikTok Shop as a dominant digital shopping platform. However, the platform's effectiveness in maintaining user satisfaction remains a challenge amidst various complaints regarding navigation complexity and service responsiveness. This study aims to analyze the influence of User Interface Design, Perceived Ease of Use, and E-Service Quality on User Satisfaction among TikTok Shop users in Indonesia, based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework. This research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method with questionnaires distributed to Gen Z respondents aged 12–27, residing in Jakarta, who have experience shopping on TikTok Shop. Data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) technique. The results indicate that both User Interface Design and Perceived Ease of Use have a significant positive influence on User Satisfaction. Conversely, E-Service Quality was found to have no significant impact on User Satisfaction. These findings imply that user satisfaction on TikTok Shop is primarily driven by visual experience and operational ease rather than other electronic service attributes. This study contributes to the theoretical expansion of TAM within the social commerce context and provides practical insights for platform developers to prioritize the optimization of interface design and application usability.

Abstract

Prasman (Eupatorium triplinerve Vahl) is a medicinal plant widely distributed in Eastern Indonesia and has long been traditionally used for various health-related purposes. The presence of secondary metabolites in this plant indicates potential biological activities that warrant further investigation, including toxicity assessment. This study aimed to determine the LC50 value of the ethanol extract of prasman leaves using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol as the solvent. Toxicity testing was conducted on Artemia salina larvae at concentrations of 10, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, and 10000 ppm. Each concentration was tested in duplicate with ten larvae in each treatment group. Larval mortality was observed after 24 hours of exposure, and the resulting data were used to determine the LC50 value of the extract. The results showed that the ethanol extract of prasman leaves had an LC50 value of 849,59 ppm. Based on this result, the ethanol extract of prasman leaves was classified as moderately toxic. These findings indicate the presence of bioactive compounds that may contribute to the plant’s biological activity and provide a scientific basis for further studies on its phytochemical constituents and potential pharmacological properties.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has increasingly shifted from charitable assistance toward sustainable community empowerment, requiring active local participation and strong grassroots leadership. This study aims to explain the role of local heroes in sustaining the Cakra Lumaku CSR-based community empowerment program of PT PLN Indonesia Power UBP Kamojang PLTP Gunung Salak Unit, with particular attention to Ade Iwan as a local institutional entrepreneur. The research employed Participatory Action Research (PAR) combined with a qualitative single-case study design. Data were collected over six months through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, focus group discussions, documentation, and document analysis involving CSR facilitators, community leaders, village government representatives, and beneficiary groups. Data credibility was strengthened through triangulation of sources, methods, and participant perspectives. The findings show that Ade Iwan’s role developed gradually through social mapping, capacity building, and delegated responsibility. He created opportunities from local institutional gaps, mobilized material, social, cultural, and financial resources, and institutionalized new practices through organizational structures, standard procedures, leadership regeneration, and the Raksamala Learning Center. The study concludes that sustainable CSR empowerment depends not merely on corporate funding, but on strengthening legitimate local leaders who can embed collective change within community institutions and sustain it beyond corporate intervention over time.
