Abstract

This study aims to deconstruct the negative meaning of the term "authoritarian" in contemporary leadership discourse by clearly distinguishing between authoritarianism as an identity inherent in the leader and authoritarianism as a function that can be legitimately exercised under certain conditions. Using library research method with a qualitative-philosophical approach, this study analyzes two main sources: Plato's thought on the Philosopher-King in the Allegory of the Cave (Republic Books V-VII) and the moments of Jesus' unilateral decision-making in the canonical Gospels. The results show that Plato offers a model of functional authoritarian leadership in which the Philosopher-King is obligated to lead firmly to liberate society from ignorance, based on knowledge of the highest truth and for the purpose of the common good. In the Gospels, four moments are identified where Jesus made unilateral decisions: the forgiveness of the woman caught in adultery, healing on the Sabbath, the calling of the first disciples, and the cleansing of the Temple. These actions were always based on claims of unique authority, aimed at the liberation of others, and undertaken with a willingness to pay a high price. Based on the synthesis of Plato's thought and Jesus' practice, four conditions for the legitimacy of authoritarian leadership are formulated: epistemological condition (possession of objective truth), teleological condition (purpose of liberation), situational condition (context requiring decisiveness), and moral condition (integrity and humility). These four conditions are cumulative and must be fulfilled simultaneously; otherwise, authoritarianism degenerates into tyranny. This study contributes to the development of a more nuanced leadership theory by distinguishing function from identity, and provides a critical framework for evaluating claims of authoritarian leadership.

Abstract

This article reexamines the figure of Esau in comparison with his brother Jacob, focusing on their respective leadership strengths as narrated in Genesis 25–36. Traditionally, scholars in biblical studies and theological reflection have prioritized Jacob as the covenant patriarch who received the birthright, while Esau has been marginalized as the rejected, even forgotten, firstborn. Using a qualitative methodology that combines exegetical study, narrative analysis of the Hebrew text, and comparative leadership theory, the article examines key passages such as Esau’s reconciliation with Jacob in Genesis 33 and the genealogical establishment of Edom in Genesis 36. Jacob, by contrast, is portrayed as a leader shaped by covenantal authority and strategic maneuvering. Taken together, their lives offer two complementary paradigms of leadership—one spiritual and visionary, the other pragmatic and reconciliatory. These findings suggest that Esau should not be reduced to a lesser figure, but rather should be recognized as a model of leadership that values forgiveness, healing, and the courage to move beyond past. This reassessment not only enriches biblical leadership studies but also provides contemporary insights into balancing covenant vision with pragmatic reconciliation in leadership contexts.

Abstract

Relational leadership, which emphasizes proximity and trust, frequently serves as a gateway for nepotistic practices, particularly within community-based organizations such as churches. This article aims to analyze the leadership of Eli the Priest (1 Samuel 2–4) through the lens of Michel Foucault's relational power theory to uncover the mechanisms of social nepotism concealed within religious authority structures. This study employs a qualitative hermeneutic approach alongside critical discourse analysis, utilizing the biblical text as primary data and literature on nepotism and power theory as secondary data. The findings indicate that Eli's leadership failure was not merely an individual moral failing, but rather the product of a relational power network that positioned his sons as an inner circle, thereby normalizing deviance and hindering accountability. The Foucaultian analysis reveals how pastoral power can be distorted into an instrument of domination through relational closeness. This article contributes to the discourse on Christian leadership by introducing a critical-sociological perspective to diagnose the pathology of relational nepotism, while also offering a prevention framework based on accountability and transparency systems. The results of this research are highly relevant for both religious and secular organizations in managing the risks associated with the abuse of power through inner circles.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a dual competency-based curriculum model called "Teopreneur," integrating theology and entrepreneurship within theological higher education in Indonesia. The issue addressed is the gap between theological education, which focuses on spiritual competencies, and the demands of the global-local economy requiring adaptive skills and financial independence for graduates. Employing a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review, data were collected from Scopus and Sinta-indexed journals and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The main findings yield two contributions: first, a dual competency matrix encompassing theological-leadership (60%), entrepreneurial (40%), and integrative domains; second, a 144-credit Bachelor of Christian Leadership curriculum design featuring an integrative structure through dual internships, capstone projects, and authentic assessment. This model expands the discourse on integrating faith and entrepreneurship as a holistic educational framework, while providing practical guidance for theological colleges to design contextual learning aligned with the Independent Learning-Independent Campus (MBKM) policy and Indonesia's people-based economy potential. The implications suggest this model can enhance graduate competitiveness, ministerial economic self-reliance, and the church's role in community socio-economic empowerment. Further research is needed to empirically test the model's validity and effectiveness.
