Rolling Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal and also open to submissions and responses from any academy who concentrate in media and culture issues. We take seriously the need to move ideas outward, so that our cultural debates may have some resonance with wider political and cultural interests. Each issue is organised around a one word theme and is edited by one or two guest editors with a particular interest in that theme. Rolling Journal provides a forum for the presentation of research and discussion concerning the media within their political, economic, cultural and historical contexts. The journal is interdisciplinary, regularly engaging with a wider range of issues in cultural and social analysis. Its focus is on substantive topics and on critique and innovation in theory and method.

Abstract

The film's Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck is a film-drama and romance genre that raises the love story of a young man named Zainuddin to Hayati who is blocked from customary rule. There is a prominent use of coloring in the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. Color selection was determined during the pre-production process as the identity of the film. Researchers examine the application of coloring in the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck aims to determine the process of the message that is contained in the film. Research discussing the application of coloring is analyzed by the semiotics approach of Christian Metz film among others descriptive Syntagma, parallel Syntagma, and alternate Syntagma. Research on the application of coloring the film's Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck also used color theory to reinforce the perception of the dominant use of color in the film. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods with data collection techniques in the form of observations, documentation, and library studies. The results of the research can be proved that the color tendencies in the film's Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck were conceptualized as a marker of space, time, and scene, and influenced the character's condition and atmosphere in the scene.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini membahas tentang dekonstruksi stereotip laki-laki pada tokoh Ichiro dalam film Inuyashiki live action. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mendeskripsikan dekonstruksi stereotip laki-laki pada tokoh Ichiro dalam film Inuyashiki live action dan mendeskripsikan faktor yang mempengaruhi dekonstruksi tersebut. Data penelitian dikaji dengan menggunakan teori sinematografi dan semiotika poststrukturalis Roland Barthes. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Hasil penelitian yang yang telah dilakukan adalah terdapat 8 dekonstruksi pada tokoh Ichiro dalam film Inuyashiki live action yaitu penampilan fisik paruh baya, takut, lemah, tidak tegas, emosional, lemah lembut, pasif dan tidak pintar memberi alasan. Faktor yang mempengaruhi dekonstruksi tersebut adalah pergeseran mitos dan hubungan antara Ichiro dan keluarganya. faktor yang mempengaruhi dekonstruksi tersebut adalah pergeseran mitos dan hubungan antara Ichiro dan keluarganya. Film Inuyashiki live action ini mengkritik struktur stereotip laki-laki yang selama ini beredar di masyarakat. Kritikan tersebut kemudian menghasilkan gambaran ideologi baru pada masyarakat bahwa laki-laki maskulin tidak selalu identik dengan dominan dan kuat, seorang laki-laki juga dapat berperilaku sebagaimana manusia pada umumnya seperti menangis, pasif dan memiliki sifat takut. Abstract This study discusses the deconstruction of male stereotypes on the character Ichiro in the Inuyashiki live action film. The purpose of this study is to describe the deconstruction of male stereotypes on the character Ichiro in the Inuyashiki live action film and describe the factors that influence the deconstruction. The research data were assessed using Roland Barthes's theory of cinematography and semiotics. This research is qualitative research by using descriptive methods. The results of the research that have been carried out are 8 deconstructions of Ichiro's character in the Inuyashiki live action film that is middle-aged, fearful, weak, indecisive, emotional, gentle, passive and not good at giving reasons. Factors affecting the deconstruction are a shift in myth and the relationship between Ichiro and his family. the factors influencing the deconstruction are the shifting of myths and the relationship between Ichiro and his family. The Inuyashiki live action film criticizes the stereotypical structure of men that has been circulating in the community. The criticism then produces a new ideological picture in society that masculine men are not always synonymous with dominant and strong, a man can also behave like humans in general such as crying, passive and have a nature of fear.

Abstract

The artwork "The Role of Sound in the Bondar Hatabosi Docudrama Film" aims to create a docudrama film that provides a reflection on how the importance of natural and environmental sounds in the form of culture in Luat Hatabosi village is especially able to shape the emotions of the audience who hear it. The creation of this film is in the docudrama genre because it tells a story based on a true story from historical re-enactment with elements of dramatization. For this reason, the use of real sound is very appropriate to the genre of this film, namely docudrama. The object of creating this work of art is the sounds of nature and the environment in the form of culture in Luat Hatabosi village so that it can play an important role in the docudrama film "Bondar Hatabosi", such as forming emotions in the audience. The audience's emotions in question, such as positive vibrations, relaxation, calm, and so on, are caused by the nature of natural sounds which are able to stimulate the brain in controlling human emotions. The concept for creating this work focuses on the diegetic sound aspect. Diegetic sound itself is all forms of sound contained in the story world of the film. Diegetic sound in films combines it into two forms, namely onscreen sound and offscreen sound. The sound on the screen is defined as all the sounds produced by the actors in the story and the objects in the frame. Meanwhile, offscreen sound is defined as all sound produced from outside the frame.

Abstract

Bhâko adalah film fiksi yang menceritakan kerasnya kehidupan petani tembakau di Kabupaten Jember. Teknik sinematografi yang digunakan pengkarya adalah teknik dynamic shot. Penggunaan dynamic shot dipilih dengan tujuan memvisualkan rutinitas dan konflik yang terjadi di dalam masyarakat khususnya petani tembakau di Kabupaten Jember. Untuk mencapai dynamic shot, pengkarya menggunakan beberapa teknik seperti handheld, follow shot, pan and tilt, dan tracking. Selain menggunakan dynamic shot, pengkarya juga menambahkan aspek pendukung lain seperti pencahayaan, aspek ratio cinemascope (2,35:1), dan komposisi. Alur cerita film Bhâko menggunakan alur multiplot. Oleh karena itu, teknik dynamic shot dirasa sangat cocok untuk memvisualkan setiap situasi dan suasana, serta membawa mood di setiap scene.

Abstract

This article addresses the representation of Indonesian migrant labor experiences, particularly from Jember, in local cinema by presenting a multifaceted analysis of the film Rawuh (2019). The study emphasizes the film's depiction of socio-cultural dynamics and its contribution to existing discourses on immigration and migrant labor. Utilizing close textual analysis and scrutinizing mise-en-scène elements such as setting, lighting, costume, and props, the paper probes the film's representation of the rural community's aspirations for upward social mobility, as well as the repercussions of immigration on the characters' lives and societal dynamics. Moreover, by integrating theories by Pierre Bourdieu and pertinent literature on social class, cultural capital, and habitus, the study delves into the film's portrayal of social class and inequality, illuminating the intricate interplay between cultural assets, social stratification, and the quest for distinction. Through a rigorous examination of the film, the study underscores the ways in which Rawuh (2019) intersects with and contributes to ongoing discourses on immigration, labor, and global economic forces, accentuating the film's pertinence to contemporary debates surrounding the experiences and challenges encountered by Indonesian migrant workers from Jember. Based on the analysis also serves as evidence that local films have the potential to offer a more authentic portrayal of their respective societies, as they tend to closely engage with the prevalent issues in their immediate surroundings.

Abstract

Aashiqui 2 is the romantic musical drama in which the main focus is on the scene that produced by the main character. Through the main character, this film is created by using an interesting plot that builds a strong unity of dramatical structure. By this reason, the topic then is used as the background of the study by investigating a film entitled Aashiqui 2. The problem of the study focuses on how the main character constructs the dramatical structure. Through that focus, the goal of the study is to know how the role of the main character in constructing dramatical structure on Aashiqui 2. The analysis uses the Dramatic Plot Kernodle in classifying language that used by the main character. Afterwards, the analysis method uses mise-en-scene approach in investigating the main character that is relates to the elements of dramatical structure. In accoredance with visual data, the researcher uses one of cinemathography aspects called framming as the guidance in every step of analyzing the data. This study is qualitative research method by description formation. The technique of collecting data uses an observation, literature review and documentation. Based on the process of analysis, the result is to reveal how the main character’s role in constructing the dramatical structure on Aashiqui 2.

Abstract

Film distribution is an activity in the form of promotion with the aim to bring the film together with the audience. This is the basis of this research with the object of the film Dilan 1991. The problem of the research is how the concept of reference mix by Max Pictures in conducting the promotion strategy of the film Dilan 1991. The purpose of this research is to find out the concept of mixing reference by Max Pictures in conducting the film Dilan 1991 promotion strategy. This study uses qualitative research methods and theoretical approaches to marketing and promotion strategies. Data collection techniques used in this study were interviews with film Dilan 1991 producers and the film Dilan 1991 promotion team, observation of reporting on film Dilan 1991 in the mass media, and literature studies on marketing and promotion strategies. The results of this study are expected to be able to reveal how the concept of the promotional mix reference by Max Pictures in carrying out the promotion strategy of the film Dilan 1991. This research resulted in 2 discussions including a marketing strategy and a promotional mix reference in the film Dilan 1991.

Abstract

Films are often used as a medium to address ongoing issues in society, one of the examples is HIV/AIDS. A “death sentence” as results from “deviant behavior” is still stigmatized and remains a major obstacle in mitigating the spread of the HIV up to the present day, since its first case in Indonesia back in 1987. One of Indonesian films that address the issue of HIV/AIDS is "Mika" (2013) revolves around a girl named Indi who falls in love with Mika, an ex-injectable drug user who suffers and eventually dies from AIDS. This film will be studied from an interdisciplinary perspective by analyzing the content, concepts, and contexts within the framework of visual cultural theories, using descriptive qualitative research methodology. The film "Mika" (2013) should have a close connection to the issues they represent and how they responsibly address the main issue at hand, which is to break the negative stigma associated with HIV/AIDS rather than reinforcing the notion of 'punishment' for 'deviant behavior' by exploiting the tragedy. Abstract

“Cahaya Cinta Perlahan Menyilaukan” is a virtual reality based interactive film produced by the Film and Animation department at Multimeda Nusantara University. This film was developed as an alternative way of learning vocational skills, especially in a film production environment. This film has two episodes and three difereent interactive levels to learn basic film lighthing. This study was conducted during the interal film premiere using a post survey questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a usability measure to determine how easy it is to experience the interactive film. Using two categories by Nielsen (1996) such as memorability and learnablity to measure usability, 44 attendees filled the survey. The overall result from the survey is beneficial to improve the succeeding version of the film.

Abstract

Film merupakan permainan logika tanda (sign-logic) yang sarat dengan nilai kultural. Budaya menjadi suatu hal yang secara tidak langsung pasti ada pada setiap film. Mise en scene menjadi salah satu aspek film yang dapat menggambarkan budaya. Penelitian dilakukan guna mendeskripsikan bagaimana peran mise en scene dapat merepresentasikan budaya Sumba dalam film Humba Dreams. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dan menggunakan film Humba Dreams sebagai sumber data. Hasil dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa mise en scene yang terdiri dari setting, make up dan wardrobe serta pergerakan pemain dan dialog berperan untuk menggambarkan bagaimana representasi budaya Sumba, terutama Sumba Timur direpresentasikan secara reflektif dan intensional. Hal ini memungkinkan peneliti untuk dapat lebih memahami makna budaya Sumba secara mimetic dan dapat dipahami dari motivasi pembuat film.
