Rolling Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal and also open to submissions and responses from any academy who concentrate in media and culture issues. We take seriously the need to move ideas outward, so that our cultural debates may have some resonance with wider political and cultural interests. Each issue is organised around a one word theme and is edited by one or two guest editors with a particular interest in that theme. Rolling Journal provides a forum for the presentation of research and discussion concerning the media within their political, economic, cultural and historical contexts. The journal is interdisciplinary, regularly engaging with a wider range of issues in cultural and social analysis. Its focus is on substantive topics and on critique and innovation in theory and method.

Abstract

Time loop atau pengulangan waktu menjadi salah satu alternatif untuk menunjang curiosity (rasa ingin tahu). Time loop dalam film seringkali dapat meningkatkan rasa ingin tahu (curiosity) karena membuka berbagai pertanyaan menarik dan memunculkan elemen misteri atau teka-teki. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki bagaimana time loop dalam film Kembang Api (2023) karya Herwin Novianto dapat meningkatkan rasa ingin tahu (curiosity). Menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dan teori naratif Tzvetan Todorov (1971) yang dimodifikasi oleh Lacey dan Gillespie (Eriyanto, 2013), penelitian ini memiliki hasil yaitu bentuk naratif pada filmnya sesuai dengan teori naratif Todorov dan terdapat 6 kali putaran waktu (time loop). Melalui time loop, curiosity dapat meningkat sebagai elemen yang menciptakan unsur dramatik dalam cerita. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi pada pemahaman lebih lanjut tentang bagaimana time loop dapat diintegrasikan dalam aspek naratif dan visual film sehingga meningkatkan daya tarik terhadap film.

Abstract

Film is an audio-visual product that cannot be separated from the audio and visual elements themselves. Audio in films is something important, because audio or sound in films can provide an experience that is captured by the human listener's senses in addition to the visualization of the film. The beauty of films is captured by the visual senses, while the beauty of music is captured by the auditory senses. Apart from being an illustration of a scene, music in films can also manipulate the audience's emotions without realizing it. The interaction between visual and auditory experiences has its own charm in every setting. Thor Love and Thunder (2022) film marks changes in atmosphere in the film by using leitmotif techniques in the music or score. Leitmotif is a technique of bringing together meaning, memory, and emotion in music that can produce a richer listening experience and a better understanding of the enduring appeal of dramatic music (Stull, 2015:2). Leitmotif is a term that describes music as a marker of the presence of an idea, concept, character or motif in a story.

Abstract

Television has a significant influence in shaping public opinion and mindset. Research in 2021 found some programs didn't meet KPI standards. "Mata Najwa" episode "PSSI Bisa Apa Jilid 6: Lagi-lagi Begini" on Trans7 sparked controversy and legal action from PSSI representative. The purpose of this research is to examine the alignment of the content of the talk show program "Mata Najwa" episode "PSSI Bisa Apa Jilid 6: Lagi-Lagi Begini" with the P3SPS. This research utilized Tzvetan Todorov's narrative structure theory, modified by Nick Lacey, as the primary theory, and the Pedoman Perilaku Penyiaran dan Standar Program Siaran to assess the conformity of the narrative with the broadcasting norms. The research employed a qualitative research design with a descriptive writing technique. The data collection techniques used are observation and literature review. The data analysis stage includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings conclude that the conformity of the content of the talk show "Mata Najwa" episode " PSSI Bisa Apa Jilid 6: Lagi-lagi Begini" with the Pedoman Perilaku Penyiaran dan Standar Program Siaran is appropriate, and the broadcast did not violate the guidelines.

Abstract

The term "mairil" generally describes an act of affection between fellow students. However, sometimes it also refers to junior students who have white, attractive, adorable physical characteristics, a face that looks like a baby face. Senior students often choose them as mairil partners. Meanwhile, the term "nyempet" is used to describe the sexual act of intercourse between male students. Generally, this is done by senior students towards their maiden partners. Mairil and nchempet behavior in the Islamic boarding school environment is the basic issue that the author will describe in this audio visual work. This film is constructed as a film with a suspense drama genre Wahyu's behavior is the basis for the creator to use the Kuleshov effect technique with the concept of visual storytelling. Another reason why this technique is applied is to present the point of view of the character Cholis who also plays an important role in the continuity of the story The artistic work process in making the film Wahyu (Revelation) begins with observation, development or developing story ideas, pre-production stages, production stages and post-production stages. The Kuleshov effect technique in image editing focuses on the audience's perception of a character's reaction to something they see, and this technique can be applied by juxtaposing a character's expression shot with a POV shot. The creator as editor was able to apply this technique in the film Wahyu (Revelation) in scene 5, and scene 15to build the audience's perception of a character's reaction to an event

Abstract

This research is discusses about the creativity that directors use in representing character who didn’t have much references The method used in this research is a qualitative, presented descriptively. Data was obtained through interviews and literature study. The results of research on director creativity in representing the character Gepeng in the film Srimulat: Hil yang Mustahal using the 4P’s of Creativity theory by person, process, press, and product. The results obtained show one of Fajar Nugros creativity by using make-up character and wardrobe to change’s the actor physical appearance to resamble Gepeng character, Fajar Nugros is classified as a good director based on Ken Dancyger classification of directors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the framing of online media Detik.com and Kompas.com related to the development of the Nusantara Capital Project (IKN) in the period 1-7 November 2023. The method used is framing analysis using Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M models. Kosicki, which consists of four main structures: syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical. This study identifies how the two media frame news about IKN development, including news focus, word choice, and information presentation. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in the way the two media deliver news, which is influenced by the editorial policies and objectives of each media. Detik.com tends to place more emphasis on the technical aspects and physical achievements of development, while Kompas.com more on the political and social issues related to the project. The research provides insight into how media shape public perception through their framing strategies.

Abstract

Abstract This research discusses the role of mise-en-scene in the process of self-efficacy of Chiron's character in Moonlight. The purpose of this research is to describe the role of the mise-en-scene in the visual aspect of Chiron's self-efficacy process. The data of this study were studied using Bordwell and Thompson's mise-en-scene theory, as well as Albert Bandura's observational learning which focuses on aspects of mise-en-scene (settings, costumes and make-up, lighting, as well as characthers and their movements) and the four forming factors of selff efficacy (mastery of experience, social modeling, social persuasion, and physical and emotional conditions). The results of the data analysis conclude that there are eleven scenes with mise-en-scene aspects that support the formation of the chiron character's self-efficacy process in the three story stages. Social modeling, social persuasion, and physical and emotional conditions occur in the first to third stages, while mastery of experience only occurs in the third stage. Abstract

Advertising is one of the media conveying information. In this contemporary era, humans always consume images from the mass media. Television or other online media is one of the mass media that contains advertisements. In order to arouse the desire to consume a product, advertisers make advertisements as creative as possible, one of which is the Gojek company. This ad presents a kuntilanak as a Gojek user, from here there is hyperality that occurs. The purpose of this study is to describe the depiction of visual hyperreality in the GO-JEK advertisement Your Version: Kunti. This research uses a qualitative approach with interpretative textual analysis. The results of this study show that the GO-JEK advertisement for Your Version: Kunti is a simulacra, which transforms concrete things (human version of Gojek users) into something abstract (Gojek users version of kuntilanak). In fact, the hyperreality in the GO-JEK advertisement for Your Version: Kunti is just an image that transcends reality.

Abstract

Film berpengaruh besar pada kehidupan masyarakat karena film dapat mempengaruhi jiwa, pikiran, gaya hidup, tingkah laku bahkan hingga perkataan bagi seseorang yang telah menontonnya. Representasi pesan moral yang disampaikan pada film diteliti menggunakan teori dari Roland Barthes (semiotika) dengan dukungan teori dari Pratista (mise en scene). Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana merepresentasikan pesan moral yang disampaikan dalam film Tarung Sarung dapat diterima oleh khalayak penonton, dengan jenis penelitian kualitatif, metode deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik observasi, dokumentasi, dan studi pustaka. Penyajian data dan analisis data dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari reduksi data, penyajian data, penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Penyajian data berupa representasi adegan dan dialog pada film Tarung Sarung dalam menyampaikan pesan moral dengan menggunakan kalimat dan bahasa peneliti secara deskriptif, yang mudah dipahami oleh pembaca, dengan adanya potongan scene gambar yang telah dipilih oleh peneliti dalam penjabarannya dengan melakukan screenshot pada film Tarung Sarung menggunakan aplikasi IMDb. Variabel yang diteliti berupa adegan dan dialog yang ada pada film Tarung Sarung, yang dianalisis dengan teori semiotika Roland Barthes dan aspek mise en scene sebagai teori pendukung. Adanya unsur denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos sebagai teori utama dari semiotika dapat menjabarkan rumusan masalah dalam mempresentasikan pesan moral dengan uraian yang lebih mudah dan meluas pada adegan dan dialog yang diteliti. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan, dengan menganalisis adegan dan dialog pada film Tarung Sarung terdapat beberapa scene yang menjabarkan pesan moral yang di antaranya yaitu pesan moral dalam perkelahian, pesan moral dalam menghargai seseorang, pesan moral dalam unjuk rasa (demo), pesan moral akan keyakinan terhadap Tuhan, pesan moral dalam gotong royong, dan pesan moral pertarungan dalam sarung. Adanya aspek mise en scene yang terdiri dari setting, make up dan wardrobe, lighting, pemain dan pergerakannya, mendukung dalam menyampaikan suatu pesan moral yang ada. Mitosnya yang ada pada film Tarung Sarung, sosok laki-laki yang bernama Deni menjadi tokoh penting dari adegan dan dialog yang ada pada film yang menyebabkan adanya suatu perubahan sikap dan perilakunya di kehidupan sosial dalam menyelesaikan suatu permasalahan di lingkungan yang berbeda, dan dari ke 6 scene yang telah dipilih oleh peneliti, adanya pesan moral dalam scene tersebut terdapat kepentingan ideologi yang terdiri dari gender, agama, politik, sosial, dan budaya, namun dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa film Tarung Sarung lebih merepresentasikan tentang pesan moral gender terhadap laki-laki dalam melakukan atau menyelesaikan permasalahan dilingkungan sosial.

Abstract

Cross cutting is one of the editing techniques in the film world that plays a role in supporting non-linear storytelling patterns. This technique allows simultaneous and dynamic movement between space and time, providing a complex and captivating narrative experience for the audience. This article aims to analyze the use of cross cutting editing in supporting non-linear storytelling patterns in Christopher Nolan's film Inception (2010). Through a descriptive qualitative research method, this study explores how the arrangement of rhythm, continuity, and manipulation of time flow through cross cutting can create layers of stories that are logically and emotionally connected. The results of the study show that cross cutting not only functions as a transition tool between scenes, but also becomes a narrative element that strengthens the theme and the audience's understanding of the complex storyline.
