JELP: Journal of English Language and Pedagogy is a journal for the study and development of English in the scope of educational and teaching studies, culture, literature, and linguistics. In its entity as a forum and media for: 1) developing knowledge based on literature and empirical results, 2) encouraging the birth of new research thoughts and actions within the scope of concepts and practices of developing English within the scope of related studies. This journal aims to advance and disseminate knowledge in the field of English language education and teaching, as well as the relation of English in the sphere of culture, literature and linguistics which is being studied in Indonesia, in order to increase the power and results of educational institutions/organizations/companies in Indonesia. Abstract

This study aims to explain the differences and similarities of masculinity depicted in the 17th American novel The Best of Me (2011) by Nicholas Sparks which is ranked 2 of the top 10 lists in weekly publishers, with romance and fiction genres, with Novel A Little Life (2015) the work of the United States novelist Hanya Yanagihara who won both the 2015 Man Booker Prize, the Goodreads choice awards for the best fiction category and the national book award for fiction. Using the fiction genre, this research is comparative literature. It uses gender theory with masculine concepts from John Beynon (2002) which is written in his book entitled Masculinities and Culture. This study uses a context-oriented approach,Data Collection Techniques using literature study by reading, taking notes, and documenting data. After the data is collected, data reduction is carried out. The data that has been selected will be classified to take action to analyze the differences and similarities of masculinity in the male main character Dawson Cole in the Novel The Best of Me with Jude in the Novel A Little Life. The author finds some differences in reading aspects of masculinity according to John Beynon in the two characters. The difference lies in aspects: Age & Physical, Education, Sexual Orientation, Class & Occupation, Status & Lifestyle. The author finds similarities in reading aspects of masculinity according to John Beynon in Dawson and Jude in the Historical Location aspect. Both of them have pasts that they dont not want to open up.

Abstract

This research was aimed to discuss the linguistics features, which was vowel phoneme, in Javanese language Wonosobo’s dialect. This study was extremely essential to recognize the vowel phoneme in Wonosobo since this regency abut on many regions uttering many dialects, which encouraged Wonosobo to have a mixed dialect. The research design was descriptive qualitative methods because this research analyzed the social complication, which was language phenomenon. After analyzing the data, it was found that vowel phoneme applied were [a], [i] [u], [e], [ə], [o], and [ɔ] with [I], [U] and [ɛ] as allophones.

Abstract

In morphology, the formation of new words is based on the word-formation process. The word-formation process itself is the concept of how new words can be formed. Several processes underlie the formation of new words in a language. This theory is based on Yule (2010). A comprehensive analysis requires answers to questions. 1. How new words are formed in Indonesian language communication, 2. What formations are dominant in the formation of new words? Observation serves as a data collection tool. The author collects new words to determine the natural word formation conditions used in communication and to identify the process of word formation without the intervention of the researcher. Finally, they are classified according to the process of word formation. This study uses data triangulation to ensure the research obtains valid data. The first-word formation process is blending which dominates the formation of new words in Indonesian with 13 processes found. The second process that dominates is the acronym with 8 found processes. The clipping process also includes the most processes in the formation of new words with 5 processes. The creation of new words found is not only blending, acronyms and clipping but also borrowing processes with 3 processes and compounding with 1 process. The first-word formation process is blending which dominates the formation of new words in Indonesian with 13 processes found. The second process that dominates is the acronym with 8 found processes. The clipping process also includes the most processes in the formation of new words with 5 processes. The creation of new words found is not only blending, acronyms and clipping but also borrowing process with 3 processes and compounding with 1 process.

Abstract

The world is currently infected with the covid-19 virus pandemic. The whole world is trying to find a way out, but in this case there is something positive about the covid-19 virus pandemic. One of them is learning words related to this co-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to identify words that were politicized with synonym words, namely treatment and therapy. The method in this study uses the corpus method with data extracted from the sketching machine application. Mother's research results are that word care is more politically related to nouns than adjectives, while therapeutic words are politicized with various words, such as nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze translation techniques and translation ideology used by translators in translating subtitle texts in the film Olaf's Frozen adventure. In this study using descriptive qualitative research with data in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences containing translation techniques in the subtitle text of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure. The data collection technique in this study was to use documents and archives, by watching the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure and reading the available subtitles in both the source language and the target language and transcribing. In analyzing the data the steps taken by the researcher are watching and reading the subtitle text of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure, analyzing translation techniques and translation ideology, and finally drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the analysis, there are 12 translation techniques used by translators in translating the subtitles of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure from 133 data. Based on the frequency of use of these techniques are: reduction technique 17, borrowing 9, literal translation 27, equivalent 24, calculus 14, transposition 11, amplification 5, particulation 2, linguistic compression 17, modulation 5, adaptation 1, and generalization 1. applied by translators in translating the subtitles of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure is the ideology of domestication.

Abstract

The paper aims at investigating the students’ obstacles in English learning on speaking skill. The research design in this study was a descriptive with qualitative paradigm. The subjects of this study were eight grade class consisting of 28 students at MTs. Miftahul Ulum Gondanglegi. The research instruments applied in this research were questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires were distributed to the students, while the interview was conducted with the English teacher. The results of this research revealed that the students faced two main obstacles in speaking skill; students’ language skill and students’ phycological obstacles. In terms of students’ language skill, the students faced poor in vocabulary obstacle, poor in grammar obstacle, poor in pronunciation obstacle. While related to students’ phycological challenges, they encountered challenges such as fear of making mistakes, having shyness, feeling anxiety, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of speech acts in theform of non-speech locution, illocution, and perlocution in theanimated films of Adit Sopo and Jarwo and Upin & Ipin. Themethod used in this research is descriptive qualitative method.The sources obtained were through the animated films of AditSopo and Jarwo and Upin & Ipin on episodes with the themeof Eid. Based on data analysis, it has been found that in theanimated film Adit Sopo and Jarwo there are types of speechacts of locution, illocution, and perlocution. Likewise with theanimated film Upin and Ipin. In the animated film Adit Sopo& Jarwo, speech acts that often appear are illocutionary acts ofdirective type, and the least that appears is the act of speechmanagement, as well as Upin & Ipin animated films. Thisshows that the location of neighboring countries and culturesthat are not so much different in celebrating Eid can beinfluential in making the two animated films so that the speechacts that appear have almost the same percentage.

Abstract

This study aims to describe linguistic and non-linguistic features as well as the types of messages contained in the text of the susu_L wahtasapp chat group. the data used is the result of text conversations of members of the whatsapp group Susu_L. the technique used by the author is by taking pictures (captures or screen shots) from cellphones, then observing directly in the group to obtain data, and the last is conducting interviews with the group admins to obtain the information needed. The results of this study are the linguistic features contained in the text of the wahtasapp milk_L group in the form of morphemes, phrases and sentences and the nonlinguistic features contained in the chat group are in the form of emoticons. The types of messages used by group members are in the form of verbal messages and non-verbal messages.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a plague that has become a pandemic for the world. Necessary, many researchers who conduct research to understand about COVID-19, both medical and other scientific disciplines such as language science. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is a contextualization of the words DISTANCE and DISTANCING with SOCIAL kolokat. For this reason, the mixed method is used to obtain coherent results. The results of this study indicate that the T-score of DISTANCING 16.1 and DISTANCE -14. This shows that the word SOCIAL is more commonly used with the word DISTANCING in corpora. The second finding is a recontextualization of the word DISTANCING in the negative direction.

Abstract

Community is a form of the result of human social interaction. The formation of this community is based on many things and provides various kinds of impacts in social life, one of these impacts is the emergence of certain language attributes in a community and these language attributes can be different from those in other communities. This also occurs in one of the largest online communities in Indonesia, Kaskus, where members of the community have special language attributes in interactions between members. The language attribute that appears in this community is a marker, either implicitly or explicitly, that those who use the language attribute are part of that community. In this study, the Kaskus online community has a language attribute in the form of registers used in greeting and promotion interactions.
