Abstract

Purpose – This Literature Research will analyze the themes of beauty, violence, and moral tension in H. D. Carlton's novel Haunting Adeline using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Methodology – By focusing on key Freudian concepts such as the id, ego, superego, repression, and the life–death drives, this study examines how the novel portrays desire and boundary-breaking behavior within the dark romance genre. Findings – Through close reading, the analysis shows how the characters' actions reflect unconscious impulses that challenge traditional ideas of morality, consent, and emotional control. Novelty – The results suggest that the novel's blend of attraction and danger creates a space where psychological conflict becomes central to the reader's experience. Significance – Overall, this study argues that Haunting Adeline not only pushes the limits of romantic storytelling but also highlights how human behavior is shaped by complex inner forces, making it a meaningful text for understanding the relationship between genre, morality, and the unconscious mind.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the portrayal of racism in The Help, a film that reflects racial inequality rooted in social systems, everyday interactions, and media representation. Methodology – This research employed a descriptive qualitative design using purposive sampling. The data were selected from spoken dialogues, monologues, and narrative voice in the movie. The data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, then identified, classified, and analyzed using Carmichael and Hamilton’s theory of racism. Findings – The findings reveal that Black characters in The Help experience two types of racism, namely individual racism and institutional racism. Individual racism is reflected in direct insults, humiliation, and unequal interpersonal treatment, while institutional racism is represented through social norms, policies, and legal structures that maintain racial segregation and restrict the rights of Black individuals. Novelty – This study contributes to previous research by providing a focused analysis of The Help using Carmichael and Hamilton’s theory, especially in distinguishing racism as both a personal and structural problem. Significance – This study is expected to benefit students, researchers, and educators in literature, film studies, and social studies by improving their understanding of racism as a complex social issue.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to identify the types of English spelling errors and analyze the underlying psycholinguistic factors causing these errors among fifth-grade students at SD ‘Aisyiyah 1 Kauman Pagaralam. Methodology – Employing a quantitative descriptive research design, this research involved a saturated sample of 41 students. Data were systematically collected using an English spelling test, including dictation and written tasks, alongside a Likert-scale questionnaire based on the Dual-Route Model (DRM). The collected data were processed utilizing SPSS for descriptive statistical analysis. Findings – The most frequent spelling error was Capitalization Visual (14.3%), followed by Substitution Phonological Auditory (13.7%) and Morphological Visual (12.6%). From a psycholinguistic perspective, these errors were primarily triggered by working memory limitations (Performance mean = 24.05), lexical retrieval failure (Cognitive mean = 22.54), and profound mother tongue interference (L1 mean = 22.51) combined with weak English phonological awareness. Novelty – The study empirically links written spelling error patterns back to their probable psycholinguistic causes in early EFL learners, addressing the research gap of merely counting error frequencies in local contexts. Significance – Educators and curriculum designers would benefit from this study to design targeted pedagogical interventions, ultimately improving transcription skills and writing self-efficacy in Indonesian elementary schools

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to identify and analyze the semantic ambiguity of the word “main” in news articles published on Kompas.com throughout 2025. The study focuses on examining the lexical and contextual meanings of the word “main” as well as the differences and potential contradictions between those meanings in news discourse. The word was selected because it frequently appears in various journalistic contexts and demonstrates a high level of polysemy and contextual variation. Methodology – This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method using semantic analysis. The data were collected from news articles published between January and December 2025 containing the word “main” in headlines or article contents. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques by accessing Kompas.com and selecting relevant articles through purposive sampling. The research instruments included data classification sheets and analysis tables. The data were analyzed through data reduction, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing based on lexical, contextual, grammatical, and connotative meanings. Findings – The findings reveal that the lexical meaning of “main” as “to play” rarely appeared directly in the news discourse. Instead, the word frequently carried contextual meanings such as seriousness, warning, manipulation, violation, hidden relations, risk, and strategic actions. The study also found that ambiguity emerged due to polysemy, idiomatic expressions, grammatical variations, and contextual interpretation. Forms such as “main-main,” “main mata,” and “main api” significantly contributed to semantic ambiguity in journalistic language. Novelty – This study offers a specific semantic analysis focusing on a single polysemous word in Indonesian online news discourse. It emphasizes the relationship between lexical meaning, contextual meaning, and ambiguity in media language usage. Significance – This study is beneficial for linguistics researchers, media language analysts, journalists, educators, and readers who seek to understand contextual meaning and ambiguity in journalistic texts. It may also serve as a reference for further studies related to semantics and language use in mass media.
