Abstract

The city of Medan holds numerous heritage buildings that need to be formally identified as cultural heritage assets so that the city can display its historical character through them. One such building is Warenhuis, together with the former Borsumij office on Jalan Hindu. Warenhuis was Medan's first department store and therefore carries high historical value, reflecting the city's economic progress at the time. Data were gathered through two approaches: a case-study assessment of the heritage data of Warenhuis, the former Borsumij site, and the surrounding site conditions, and a Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) to examine the building's present-day use. Data collection also involved direct field observation at both locations. For the future design direction, an Evidence-Based Design (EBD) approach is applied. The data collected through both methods were analysed separately using method triangulation and the findings were then combined and discussed together. The results describe the present condition of the historic Warenhuis building and the former Borsumij office as cultural heritage assets and outline a design recommendation for their continued use.

Abstract

The Medan Post Office is a heritage building that remains in operation today. It was constructed under the Dutch East Indies government between 1909 and 1911, designed by Dutch architect Ir. Simon Snuyf, and once symbolized the economic advancement of colonial-era Medan. Standing in the Kesawan heritage district, the building reflects Functional Modern architecture, known locally as Geometric Art Deco, and is closely tied to the growth of the tobacco plantation trade and the colonial transportation infrastructure that supported it. This study aims to trace the history of the building, identify its architectural style and characteristics, and examine it through a semiotic-code approach, namely the study of signs bound to the social codes through which meaning is collectively understood. Primary data were obtained through field surveys of the building and interviews with its management and surrounding community, complemented by secondary data from journals, print media, and reputable online sources. Findings show that the building's hermeneutic, semantic, symbolic, proairetic, and cultural codes, together with its aesthetic qualities of unity, balance, proportion, and heroic scale, continue to define its identity as a colonial-era landmark, now adaptively reused as the creative hub Pos Bloc Medan.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country rich in potential materials provided by nature and culture. This makes Indonesia equally rich in Vernacular Architecture artifacts. Several Indonesian architects recognize this potential and adopt a Vernacular Architecture approach in their architectural designs. The phenomenon of architects' awareness in utilizing existing material and cultural potential gives rise to the Contemporary Vernacular phenomenon. One architect who applies the Vernacular Architecture approach to his designs is Yu Sing, a young architect from Bandung. In almost all of Yu Sing's architectural works, the Contemporary Vernacular phenomenon is easily found. Several characteristics of Contemporary Vernacular in Yu Sing's work include the use of local materials, re-interpretation of local architecture, an architectural approach based on religious values, and an architectural approach based on local values and traditions.

Abstract

Rumah Gadang Mande Rubiah is a historic vernacular building in Nagari Lunang, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra, functioning as a museum that houses heirlooms of Bundo Kanduang, who is believed to have taken refuge in Lunang and changed her name to Mande Rubiah. Unlike most Minangkabau rumah gadang, this building does not display the curved gonjong roof resembling buffalo horns, a distinction attributed to the influence of Acehnese ethnic groups who settled along the southern coast. This study aims to explore the changes in form and function of Rumah Gadang Mande Rubiah as shaped by sociocultural dynamics, the presence of migrant ethnic groups, and the sociopolitical role of Mande Rubiah as heir to the Bundo Kanduang throne. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, combining field survey, literature review, and interviews with the users and custodians of the building. The findings show that the building has undergone three renovation phases, gradually shifting from a plain kampung-style roof toward a form that increasingly signals Minangkabau identity, while the number of original pillars continues to symbolize the ethnic groups (suku) of Nagari Lunang. The building has been formally registered as a Cultural Heritage Site (Registration No. CB.624) and now serves as both a museum and a venue for customary rituals, reflecting a layered process of cultural negotiation between local, Acehnese, and Minangkabau identities.

Abstract

Tjong A Fie Mansion in Medan is a significant example of Peranakan Chinese architecture that reflects the acculturation of local and colonial cultures, and is recognized as one of the city's protected cultural heritage buildings. This study analyzes the architectural work of Tjong A Fie Mansion through a historical-period approach, an examination of architectural style, an assessment of building characteristics, and a semiotic reading of its codes and signs. A descriptive qualitative method combining literature study and field observation was used to examine the object within its socio-cultural context. The findings show that stylistically the mansion merges European (Art Nouveau), Chinese, and Malay architectural elements into a distinctive harmony, evident in its material use, spatial organization following Feng Shui Ba Zhai principles, and rich ornamentation. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic codes—hermeneutic, semantic, symbolic, and proairetic—the study reveals that architectural elements such as the courtyard, dragon and phoenix motifs, ancestral altar, and reception halls carry layered meanings related to wealth, status, spirituality, and cultural identity. The mansion functions not merely as a residence but as a medium of cross cultural communication, representing the interaction between immigrant and local communities in early twentieth-century Medan.

Abstract

The Kauman Great Mosque (Masjid Gedhe Kauman) in Yogyakarta is not only a place of worship for Muslims but also a historical artifact of Islamic visual art and architecture in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Its distinctive form, deeply rooted in Javanese culture, carries specific meanings that have rarely been examined systematically through a sign-based reading. This study focuses on the semiotics of the mosque's architectural form and style, aiming to uncover the layers of meaning embedded within its Javanese-Islamic visual identity. A qualitative method combining historical and semiotic approaches, particularly Peirce's icon-index-symbol trichotomy, was employed. Data were collected through direct observation of the mosque's physical elements, followed by descriptive analysis and comparison with historical-cultural records and prior comparative studies. The findings indicate that key architectural elements-the three-tiered roof, the spacious veranda, the triple entrance doors, the thirty-six interconnected columns, the layered gateways, and the ornamented clock-function as symbols and indices that communicate spirituality, communal strength, and the staged process toward sacredness, while remaining firmly rooted in pre-Islamic Javanese cosmology absorbed into an Islamic framework. This study contributes to the broader understanding of Islamic visual art history in the Indonesian archipelago and offers a semiotic reading framework applicable to other Javanese mosques.

Abstract

Vernacular architecture in Indonesia features universal aesthetic principles in its traditional houses, one of which is the application of gable finials, or roof-end ornaments. However, not all Indonesian traditional houses utilize gable finials on their roofs; they are only found on specific traditional dwellings, such as the Betang traditional house in Central Kalimantan, the Rabung house in South Riau Islands, the Tambi house in Central Sulawesi, the Uma Jompa in West Nusa Tenggara, the Bagas Godang in North Sumatra, among others. Furthermore, the forms used vary, including motifs of buffalo horns, crossed swords, birds, and dragons. This study aims to identify the commonalities in the forms and meanings of the applied gable finials using a comparative method of their forms and meanings.
