Abstract

Indonesia is a country that is experiencing a crisis of child abuse and sexual violence. Data from 2015 to 2019 shows a significant increase in this problem. KPAI data states that the culprit is the closest person to the child such as stepfather and biological, closest family, and colleague. When our children ask about their sexuality, we will be moved quickly. This attitudes like that mean wrong, because children have a curiosity about many things, if we as parents cannot direct properly, cannot provide clear information they tend to look for information from others and their friends, the information is not necessarily good. Very few people, especially parents who care about sex education and place sex as something important. Even many parents who do not provide sex education to children, with the reason the child will know it by itself. During this time, the idea of sex is belonging to adults only, so discussing the problem of sex in children is not easy. However, teaching sex education to children must be given so that children do not go wrong in their lives. The purpose of sex education in early childhood is to provide an adequate understanding of physical, mental, and emotional maturity processes, reducing fear and anxiety related to sexual adjustment and development. Sex education is given starting from the age of five, age 1-5 years, age 5-10 years, age before adolescence, adolescence. How to educate young children about sex through family, environment, and education at school.

Abstract

This study aims to capture students’ profiles in terms of using video-teleconferencing (VTC) applications and to identify students’ perspectives on using the video-teleconference applications as a platform for English teaching and learning during the pandemic in the English department in Universitas Riau. This mixed-method study collected data from semi-structured interviews and an online questionnaire. The entire sophomores of the English Study Program of Riau University (n=39 students) were taken as the samples of the research. An analysis model from Miles & Huberman (2007) was used as the method to analyze the collected data. The results show that the majority (56.4 %) of the students used a mobile phone as a learning device and 59% of them relied on their own internet data for learning. The students had both positive and negative perspectives on the VTC applications. Most students thought the VTC-based learning was efficient for them. However, they reported some problems such as an unsupportive learning environment, lack of equipment, and unreliable internet connections. These problems imply that universities should provide more learning facilities for students to make online learning more effective.

Abstract

This research examined university students’ ability in paraphrasing paragraphs. This descriptive quantitative research took students of the English Education Department of Universitas Riau as samples using cluster random sampling technique. The selected sample was a Class of the English Study Program, Universitas Riau, which consists of 34 students. The data were collected by administering an online test of paraphrasing paragraphs through Google Form. The collected data were analyzed by three raters and the results were calculated and classified by using adaptation guide rubric from Brown (2004). Three aspects of paraphrasing were assessed and analyzed: contents of information, choice of words and writing convention. This study found that the ability of the Students of English Study Program in paraphrasing paragraphs was an unacceptable level, with total points; 11.21 for Content Information aspect, 9.52 for Choice of Words aspect, and 9.75 for Writing Conventions aspect. In order to answer the research question on how bad the ability is, the only clear answer is that all facts that are found within the research are only referring to the ‘crisis’ of paraphrasing ability shown by the university students themselves. This finding showed that the university students’ ability in paraphrasing paragraphs is low, due to the facts that; First, they get a low-level score in all aspects of paraphrasing. Second, they still make many fatal mistakes in every aspect of paraphrasing like; skipping important details in paraphrasing that may lead to misinformation, misusing the vocabulary and diction in creating the words in paraphrasing, and severe problems in the grammar, punctuation, and spelling (writing conventions). Moreover, choice of words seems to be the most difficult aspect for the students since it had the lowest score than other aspects in paraphrasing. This research suggests that English students should be exposed to more practices in their academic writing subject about paraphrasing skills

Abstract

Supervision means overall duties performed by a head teacher which ensures teachers perform their expected roles in the transmission of knowledge and enhance academic performances. Academic performance in examinations has consistently declined in primary schools in Kenya and the world over. The objective of the study was to; assess the relationship between the head teacher’s supervision of professional development and academic performance in Embu and Muranga counties, Kenya. The study adopted the Role theory championed by Biddle. A descriptive survey research design was used. The Target Population was 14786 and comprised of head teachers and teachers. The researchers purposefully sampled 378 public and private primary schools. Simple random sampling was used to select 256 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Reliability was ascertained by a pilot study which generated a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.93. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, precisely, correlation computations. The findings of the study informed that the highest percentage of supervision 87.4percentwas the head teachers’ permission for teachers to attend seminars, workshops, and conferences. The least facilitated activity was the training of teachers by subject panels 60.3 percent. There was a negative correlation between head teachers' supervision and teacher professional development in public and private primary schools, at r=-.069<0 and P=0.602>0.05. The relationship was not statistically significant. The Supervision of teacher’s professional development was not strongly linked to academic performance. There should be a balance between the supervision of teacher professional development. Governments should allocate more funds towards professional development. The findings of the study will inform policy decision making in the education sector in Kenya and worldwide.

Abstract

Abstract: Citing sources correctly is vital in academic writing including research proposals. Despite its significance, students seem to perform it poorly due to lack of knowledge and awareness of its role in their writing. As the result, they are often accused of committing plagiarism. One of the ways to prevent students from committing plagiarism is by providing them with sufficient knowledge and skills related to proper citations. This study is a preliminary effort to identify student citation practices within the English Education department of a state university in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Employing qualitative content analysis, the researcher examined samples of students’ proposals to describe the ways in which citations were written and the common problems that occurred. The findings suggest that students mostly cited as non-integral/non-reporting. The study also reveals that students’ most common mistakes in the citation are found in language and content. The study concludes with the need to provide students with clear guidelines for citation and strong remarks on plagiarism.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ mobile technology usage and TOEFL listening proficiency in the sixth semester of the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample of this study was 36 students in the sixth semester of the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. The Cluster Random sampling technique was utilized to choose the sample for this research. This study used two data instruments, a mobile technology usage questionnaire and TOEFL listening proficiency gained by collecting students’ TOEFL listening scores. The instruments were distributed to the respondents online through Google Forms. The mobile technology usage questionnaire was an adaptation of a questionnaire by Grenier. The respondents submitted the TOEFL listening score after finishing the questionnaire. The students’ mobile technology usage was analyzed using a Likert scale in the form of positive questions. The students’ proficiency levels were categorized using ETS Performance Descriptors for TOEFL. The researcher used the Pearson Product Moment formula to determine the correlation coefficient value. The result of this study shows that most respondents’ listening proficiency is categorized at the elementary level with a range score of the listening section 31-46. Moreover, this study revealed a moderate correlation between students’ mobile technology usage and their TOEFL listening proficiency, with a 36% determinant score. In other words, mobile technology usage is not the main factor in determining students’ TOEFL listening proficiency.
