Abstract

Whether online or face-to-face, research on collaborative writing has been widely conducted to explore its theoretical and pedagogical merits for language learning. Despite positive evidence on its benefits, more studies need to explore its implementation under specific circumstances such as teaching and learning during the pandemic Covid-19. This paper reports the EFL pre-service teachers’ perceptions and attitudes of their experiences and perceived affordances of collaborative writing toward their language and soft skill development. Data were gathered from the three questionnaires administered after students finished their collaborative writing projects: poetry infographic, descriptive text, and discussion text. Additionally, students’ reflective notes after completing all tasks were used to triangulate the data. The findings showed students’ positive perceptions of their collaborative writing experiences across the three text genres. The study also revealed students’ agreement on the affordances of collaborative writing for their language and soft skill development. Pedagogical implications are also discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into the use of collaborative writing techniques to help higher secondary students enhance their writing skills and soft skills. This was done based on the findings of earlier studies that showed the effectiveness of collaborative writing techniques in increasing students' writing abilities and soft skills development. Students in Grade 10 at Sekolah Tunas Bangsa Kubu Raya participated in the study, which used a mixed-methods research methodology. For qualitative data, an observation checklist and field note was used, while for quantitative data, a questionnaire and writing tasks were used. The researchers discovered that collaborative writing was effective in improving students' writing proficiency and soft skills after they evaluated and calculated the data. (1) improvements in writing task mean scores from 78.67 in Meeting 1 to 87.13 in Meeting 3; (2) students' responses on a questionnaire about their writing ability and soft skills reached 92 percent in elaborating ideas and 93 percent in gaining self-esteem and confidence; (3) improvements in observation checklists that were performed excellently (scale 4) by the observers on the third meeting; and (4) the note taker's complimentary comments on the field notes about the pupils' writing abilities and soft skills As a result of this data, it is suggested that collaborative writing techniques be used with higher secondary students to improve both writing performance and soft skills.

Abstract

Online learning readiness has become crucial and needs to be considered to support E-learning from various perspectives. This article sought to discover the E-learning Readiness (ELR) factors from students’ perspectives during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Fifty-two seventh-grade Junior High School students in Indonesia participated in this study. This quantitative research used thirty-nine items in a questionnaire as the data collection instrument modified from Teddy and Swatman’s (2006) model known as E-learning Readiness (ELR) factors. The model utilized six factors, namely (1) students’ readiness, (2) teachers’ readiness, (3) internet access supports, (4) management supports, (5) school culture, and (6) E-learning tendencies. The findings indicated that the students’ readiness toward E-learning had an ELR score of 69%, which means they were ready for E-learning but needed slight improvement. The results showed students experienced difficulties (i.e., they were untrained in operating electronic devices, the devices lagged during the online teaching-learning process, and they had trouble following the English material due to the lack of instruction from English teachers) in implementing E-learning. The writer concluded that the student readiness towards E-learning was considered capable and ready but required some improvement from various aspects.

They were the eighth-semester students of English education study program at the University of Tanjungpura. They have spent three years studying in the English department and have finished micro-teaching and Introduction to School Field (PLP) II course. Data from this study were collected using semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman’s model, including data reduction, and the gained data were displayed and concluded. The result showed that EFL pre-service teachers admitted that although it is easy to use the online system, they sometimes have problems in terms of internet connection and electronic devices. External factor, such as lack of motivation during the teaching practicum, hindered the pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers can overcome their problems by having preparation before teaching practice and using various learning strategies to stimulate the students, such as games, icebreakers, or quizzes. The EFL pre-service teachers also consulted with their supervisors and in-service teachers to solve their problems during teaching practicum progress

Abstract

Abstract

Investigating the causal factors, effects, and strategies to overcome writing anxiety is the aim of this research. A fifth semester student of English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Tanjungpura with high learning motivation was chosen as the participant of this research. A case study design was employed in this research by using semi-structured interview and document analysis as the method of data collection. The result of the data analysis indicated that the student experienced cognitive writing anxiety where she felt difficult in deciding a writing topic, choosing relevant vocabulary, and using appropriate grammar. Writing anxiety was caused by a high frequency of assignment, feeling lack of linguistics skill and vocabulary, and fear of being criticized by others. Based on the findings, it is revealed that the writing anxiety experienced by the participant brought a facilitative effect toward her writing performance which led her to take some efforts by managing several strategies to overcome the writing anxiety. It is reported that vocabulary checking, creating constructive surroundings to have writing practice, diary writing, and doing writing challenge are strategies she had used to overcome her writing anxiety.

The results showed that the movie contained some moral values defined by Haidt such as care, fairness or proportionality, liberty, authority or respect, and loyalty or in group, also moral values defined by Barrow, such as fairness, respect for persons, freedom, and well-being. The most dominant  moral values in this movie were liberty or freedom. The moral values are stated mostly by the characters in the movie directly, while some are stated indirectly. The moral values described in this research have important implications for teachers and other researchers, which encourage the use of various tools in analyzing discourse in literary works and able to apply the moral values in daily life. Keywords: moral value, literature, SPEAKING model, descriptive.
