Abstract

The alumni of Vocational Schools (VS) have contributed to the increasing number of unemployment recently. At the onset, the main objective of vocational education is to produce ready to work alumni. However,  the more the schools produce alumni, the higher the number of jobless people in this country. To tackle the issue,  the government launch revitalization programs for VS’s across Indonesia. The implementation of the program is intended to cut down the number of unemployment and poverty. To explore the implementation of the program within a vocational context, this study was undertaken to look at the understanding of VS principals about the revitalization programs as well as the ten core strategies of the program. Besides, the study was also conducted to explore the problems faced the principals and their expectations of the revitalization program. A qualitative phenomenology study using in-depth interviews were conducted to garner the data from nine school principals of private and public VS’s in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The findings indicate that the improvement of the competency of certified teachers is essential. Furthermore, the availability of business and industrial based (DUDI) facilities and learning resources, as well as the availability of professional development training through a link and match programs, are also important. On the other hand, the establishment of Management Information System (SIM) based on School Automation System (SAS), industry-based curriculum, teaching factory, tutorial video, local wisdom, and the role of VS as the triggers of the local economy needs more socialization by the government.

Abstract

Abstract: In the light of globalization, intercultural competence is crucially demanded by the language learners to be successful speakers and mediators in international interaction and communication. This study aims at investigating how the Indonesian EFL students view and undertake the culture learning in their classrooms. This study was a survey research carried out in October and December 2016 in two state universities: 1) University of Riau (UR) located in Riau Province and 2) Brawijaya University (UB) in Malang-East Java. There were a total of 80 participants involved by using random sampling. The student questionnaire (adopted and adapted from HST. Kiet, 2011) consisting of six statements was used. To answer the research question, descriptive statistics analysis (Sum of score, Mean and Standard Deviation) was used to analyse the completed student questionnaire. The findings reveal that the students showed positive attitudes in culture learning purposes; they mainly learned cultural facts oriented to target culture exploration as the dominant cultural learning in the classroom; they used media such as internet, TV and literature as the most dominant cultural learning sources outside the classroom; they found that culture learning benefited them to their EFL learning; and finally they agreed that the target culture should be taught together with the target language in EFL classes. Therefore, it is suggested that future researchers do such an in-depth study pertaining to students’ ICC learning and development in the environment of classroom interactions.

Abstract

Stakeholders in education continue to express concerns regarding the proliferation of students' engagement in examination irregularities in universities in the world and Kenya in particular. Despite the stringent measures put in place to curb the vice, university students continue to engage in examination irregularities. The objectives of the study were; to assess the status of the prevalence of examination malpractices among university students in the Mt Kenya region, and to compare the prevalence of examination malpractices between male and female students in universities in the Mount Kenya region. The Ethical Theory guided the study. A descriptive research design was adopted. Kathuri and Pals' sampling table was used to sample 380 student participants. Data were collected using questionnaires. Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was calculated to establish the reliability of the instrument, which yielded r=0.79 thus higher than the 0.7 thresholds of acceptance. Experts from the department of education validated research instrument. Data analysis was descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that carrying unauthorized materials (50.4%), copying of answers (49.6%) and giraffing (50%) were the most prevalent forms of examination malpractices and students did not get leakages as indicated by 84.5% of respondents. The t-test yielded a p-value of 0.720 against the theoretical p = 0.05.  The null hypothesis was accepted (at α =0.05). The engagement of male and female students in examination malpractice was relatively the same in universities under study. The study concluded that both gender engaged in examination malpractices. The study recommended that pragmatic measures were needed to control curb the menace.

Abstract

This study focuses on examining the use of Language Learning Strategies (LLS) by autonomous learners at senior high schools in relation to the type of school and academic factors in Dumai, Bengkalis, and Selat Panjang (coastal areas). The study also concentrates on the preferred by ways operated by the selected respondents to master general English, four language skills, vocabulary, and structure.  The target groups of the research are autonomous learners ( more or less 3000 students) from state senior high schools in three different small towns. Due to the homogenous characters of the target groups; academic achievement, age, and learning motivation, the sample is taken randomly as big as 10% out of the population. To collect the needed data quantitatively, the strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) (Oxford 1990) is applied, and for the qualitative data, an interview is conducted to 60 selected learners out of the sample. To analyze the quantitative data, descriptive and inferential statistics are used and for the qualitative data, listing the preferred ways are made accordingly. The findings reveal that the various LLS are used based on academic and types of school backgrounds. The social strategy is the highest use of LLS (402) among other strategies (memory, cognition, compensation, metacognition, and affection). The qualitative findings exist in the body of this article (table 6 – through table 8). The suggestion is that LLS would be better to be well instructed and discussed in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to develop e-module teaching materials with the Moodle application on motion system materials. This e-module with the Moodle application has several advantages, namely learning is more interesting and can be done remotely where educators can still control learning and assessment activities, there are discussion forums and quizzes and has security features limiting access rights where unregistered users cannot open e- module. This research is a type of research and development (R&D). The procedure for developing this research uses the ADDIE development model, where this development model consists of 5 stages, namely Analysis (analysis), Design (design), Development (development), Implementation (implementation) and Evaluation (evaluation). The research instrument was a validation sheet and a respondent's questionnaire. The media validation stage involved 5 subjects (1 media expert, 1 material expert, 1 linguist, 1 pedagogic expert, and 1 teacher). Feasibility assessment by experts using validation sheets. The practical test phase involved 5 people, the simulation test involved 5 master students at the University of Riau majoring in biology and teachers and the limited trial involved 40 students. The data analysis technique is to calculate the percentage of validation assessment scores and user responses. The results showed that the Moodle- based e-module developed met the very valid criteria with an average of 3.54, the practical aspect showed very practical with an average of 94.54, and the results of the student response test obtained a score of 96.4 with a very good category good. Based on the description above, it is concluded that the Moodle-based e- module that was developed can be a source of learning/teaching materials that can be used during learning because with the Moodle-based e-module the material presented is more interesting, educators can include videos, animations, pictures and learning can also be done remotely where educators can still control and evaluate students.

Abstract

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Islamic schools known as madrasah havebeen of increasing interest to analysts and to officials involved in formulating U.S. foreign policytoward the Middle East, Central, and Southeast Asia. Madrasah drew added attention when itbecame known that several Taliban leaders and Al-Qaeda members had developed radicalpolitical views at madrasah in Pakistan, some of which allegedly were built and partially financedthrough Saudi Arabian sources. These revelations have led to accusations that madrasah promoteIslamic extremism and militancy, and are a recruiting ground for terrorism. Others maintain thatmost of these religious schools have been blamed unfairly for fostering anti-U.S. sentiments andargue that madrasah play an important role in countries where millions of Muslims live in povertyand the educational infrastructure is in decay. This paper aims to study a misconception of therole and functions of Islamic traditional religious schools which have been linked with theactivities of terrorism. The study will be specifically focus on practice of the traditional Islamicschool, which is locally called as ‘madrasah system’.

Abstract

This quasi experimental research aims at looking at the effect of Journal Writing technique on students’ ability in writing a paragraph.  Specifically, the research answers the research questions about the students’ ability in writing, the effect of Journal Writing technique on the students’ ability in writing, and the students’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their Writing class. The sample are one class from the second semester of English Department students in 2017-2018 academic year. The data were collected through writing test and the distribution of a set of questionnaire. The results show that nearly 60% of students’ ability ini writing is at  Average to Good level before the treatment. After the treatment, 56.76% of their ability is at Good to Excellent level. To test whether the increased score is statistically significant or not, the data were analyzed using t-test. Having t-obs (8.26) which is higher than t-table (2.030), it can be said that the teaching of writing using Journal Writing technique significantly effects the students’ ability in writing paragraph. The data from questionnaire support the previous findings where nearly 64% students have ‘high’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their class.

Abstract

Advanced Earth Physics course is one of the courses discusses all aspects of physics that exist in natural processes occurring on the earth. One of the topics discussed was Landslide Natural Disaster. The purpose of this study is to discuss the use of online media and topography map in Advance earth physics classes to analyse the location of possible landslides. This research was conducted on students who are taking advanced earth physics courses for the even semester in the University of Riau, Physics Education Study Program, and 20182019 academic year. Students were given the concept of a landslide and guidelines for using Google Earth and on how to produce the topography map. Then students were required to do a mini project in terms of using Google Earth and Topography Map and to analyse the possibility of a landslide zone. Subsequently, students were given a questionnaire about understanding the material of the Avalanche that was studied with the help of Google Earth and topography map. The results show that almost all students fully understand and like what they are doing, as evidenced by an average score of 3.78 (scale 4) in terms of Google Earth's utility in studying landslide zones. Thus it can be concluded that the Google Earth media is very well-liked and can provide a deeper understanding to students in learning the concept of Landslide Natural Disasters in Advanced Earth Physics courses.

Abstract

This case study explores the Indonesian learners' reading strategies and identifies high and low-group learners' reading strategies. Semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and open-ended questions were triangulated for validity and reliability data. Several findings were revealed. The Indonesian learners read critically and varied through cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies. They applied more cognitive strategies than metacognitive and affective strategies, which was less helpful and less encouraged to think critically. Technology advances, self- concept, and time have affected the strategies used. High and low-group learners also read differently in terms of cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies. The high group learners read efficiently, critically with various reading strategies, while the low group learners are more literal, attractive, but straightforward, and specific in reading strategy. This implied that students need to be facilitated with proper reading strategies and reading facilities and use metacognitive strategy to enable critical thinking and affective strategy to overcome anxiety, fear, and relaxation. The socio-cultural strategy needs to be used by learners to reach the four skills required by the Indonesian new curriculum. Meanings were shaped by social interaction and cultural context, which then created fun learning and a conducive learning environment.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to improve student’s science literacy skills by using 5E Learning Cycle model. The treatment was conducted collaboratively for the topic ‘Structures and functions of plants’ involving Biology lectures, pre-service teachers, and the science school teachers of SMPN 21 Pekanbaru in August 2018. The focus of the observation was on science literacy and learning activities of students, both individually and in groups. Science literacy including scientific, procedural and epistemic knowledge was measured through worksheets. While the aspects of explaining scientific phenomena, evaluating and design scientific investigations, interpreting data, and the evidence were measured using an assessment sheet performance. Curiosity, scientific argumentation and environmental awareness were measured using the observation sheet. Learning activities carried out inside and outside the classroom had a positive impact on literacy skill science. The data showed the students individually or in groups could answer questions in the worksheet, more actively engaged, more enthusiastic and more curious when observing, identifying and grouping plants using real objects around school environment. Some questions arose from students when identifying corn and carrot plants about vegetative and generative structures. Overall, the implementation of 5E Learning Cycle model can improve students' scientific literacy in learning science at SMPN 21 Pekanbaru
