Abstract

Inclusive education has been accepted as the medium through which learners with disabilities and other special need will access and participate in quality education. Preparedness of implementers of inclusive education in terms of attitudes and knowledge is critical for the effective implementation of inclusive education. Based on the theory of innovation diffusion, this cross-sectional study sought to determine if head teachers and teachers’ knowledge of and attitudes towards inclusive education were predictive of effective implementation of inclusive education. Data were collected from 66 head teachers and 462 teachers from Murang’a County, Kenya, using questionnaires and an observation guide. Multiple regressions was used to analyse the data and results indicated that though head teachers and teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education and knowledge of inclusive education predicted effective implementation of inclusive education, head teachers’ attitudes had the greatest predictive strength. The implication of the findings is that concerted efforts should be put in place to ensure the acquisition of positive attitudes among implementers of inclusive education specifically head teachers and teachers.

Abstract

This is a qualitative study with descriptive data presentation. It is aimed at investigating the tendency of abuse of power in exploiting personal pronouns of Obama’s political speeches. The employed grand theory in this study is social cognition theory introduced by Teun, A. Vandijk. There are three aspects that need to be empowered: textual, social cognition and social context in disclosing the implied meanings of the use of personal pronouns in Obama’s political speeches. The data of this study were gathered by means of speech transcript collections of Obama’s speeches: 2010, 2011 and 2014 concerning terrorism issues. These transcripts obtained from online media which had been spread worldwide. The objective of this study is to describe which personal pronouns frequently exploited by Obama in his political speeches and discover the hidden meanings of the adopted personal pronouns. The findings demonstrate that: (1) Obama, tends to use personal pronouns ‘we' and ‘our', (2) Obama seems to have been selective in exploiting personal pronouns by referring to both certain contexts and situations before and after the speech was delivered, (3) The features of Obama's speeches are rhetorical, persuasive and manipulative. In terms of cognition and social context, these speeches indicate that intelligence, personal and social experiences do influence towards the emergence of a discourse. The implicitly conditioned and engineered dominance and hegemony are not considered as a force or coercion. Rather, it is thought as a common and justified when being exposed frequently.

Abstract

Since the Covid-19 outbreak, the learning implementation has shifted from offline to online. This transition causes students to have difficulty participating in learning, especially actively participating in the online learning process. One of the causes of this is the low learning motivation of students, teachers lack innovation in online learning methods. The objective of this study is to develop an alternative online learning method during the Covid-19 outbreak in the form of the online-based Two Stay Two Stray method. This is a Research and Development using the ADDIE model. The results show that the validity of the lesson plan is at an average value of 3.54, while the validity of the learning model in the expert validation and pilot tests is at an average value of 3.46 and 3.14. The results of the research show that the empirically developed method has proven to be an effective and valid learning method that enhances student comprehension and motivation.

Abstract

Since 2000, the dynamics and demographics of refugee education in Australia have changed constantly. Meanwhile, academic literature on refugee education continues to explore best practice approaches in various contexts. While these realities continue to shift, it is important to analyze any changes in what Australian literature considers best practice for refugee education. To analyze such changes, this study conducts a qualitative content analysis of academic literature published in Australia since 2000 and draws out various themes of best practice. It then analyses studies chronologically to detect change in the concept of best practice for holistic refugee education over time. The goal of holistic education is suitable for refugee students who often have extremely complex learning needs, and as such it forms the basis for what this study considers “best practice” education should strive to achieve. This study reveals that current best practice for supporting refugee students in Australia includes whole-school approaches to inclusivity, study and mental health supports, and community and family engagement. Additionally, professional training and appropriate pedagogical approaches, especially relating to literacy and supplemented by adequate resources, are vital to successful refugee education. It also reveals that since 2012, academic literature has places more emphasis on staff professional development, inclusivity, advocacy and the positive framing of refugees, and the whole-school approach to refugee education, whilst placing less emphasis on links between schools, families and refugee communities, as well as mental health and study supports for refugee students. Literature on the importance of pedagogy has remained constant since 2000.

Additionally, the research finding showed the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.480, denoting a positive and moderate correlation. Also, the determinant coefficient is 0.2304, which implies social media activeness has a 23% influence on the students' vocabulary mastery, leaving the other 77% to other factors. Having discovered that there is a moderately significant correlation between social media activeness and vocabulary mastery, it is suggested that the students need to start utilizing their social media well and wisely. Abstract

Since intensive reading has long been a part of curriculum core in Indonesia and is the main and only English skill tested in the National Examination, many teaching procedures usually focus on ways to assist students succeed in the examination. Therefore, there is a tendency for teachers to simply equip students with texts and help to make sense of the texts by translation so that enabling students to answer the given questions. While it may be helpful to some extent, there is a claim that this mode of teaching is (1) less accurate as it is deemed as practising reading, not teaching students how to read and (2) less effective for a mere texts’ translation affords insufficient support for profound understanding and autonomy in learning to occur. This paper thus addresses this teaching issue happened specifically in a junior high school in Indonesia, where teachers still use translation, i.e. Grammar Translation Method, in teaching reading with a lot of practices and less strategy of how to read. Theoretical foundations of intensive reading and theories of language learning are critically discussed, which then lead to suggest the metacognitive strategy as a potential solution to resolve the issue. This paper hence could (a) enhance our understanding on intensive reading and its relation to language learning theories and (b) offer an insight of possible solution to cope other cases similar to the one presented in this paper.

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching writing in senior high schools provides students with knowledge, experience and strategies of writing simple texts to more complex ones. This research aims at looking at how writing skills are taught at senior high schools in Riau Province-Indonesia. Specifically, the research answers the research questions about teaching materials, methods/strategies used by English teachers in the teaching of writing and students’ attitude towards writing skills. The samples are second year English Department students of FKIP Riau University coming from different cities and regencies in Riau Province. The data were collected through distributing a set of questionnaire. The results show that most writing materials consist of linguistics knowledge such as sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation and lack of writing skills and strategies like brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing. Moreover, most teachers are product oriented in their teaching of writing. Finally, most students (65.9) have low attitude towards writing skills. From these findings, it can be concluded that: writing materials need to be focussed on writing skills and strategies, teachers’ knowledge and skills on teaching methods/strategies need to be upgraded and students’ attitude towards writing skills needs to be improved. These findings can be used as a reference to do some improvement in the teaching of writing in senior high schools in Riau province.
