Muadalah: Journal of Gender and Children Studies brings attention to topics concerning gender, women, and children issues. The journal aims to disseminate cutting edge research and contemporary developments regarding these issues from multidimensional perspectives, including religion, economics, culture, history, education, law, arts, communication, politics, and theology. Abstract

Di Indonesia, kesadaran terhadap kesetaraan gender dalam buku pelajaran sekolah masih perlu mendapat perhatian. Sebagai upaya untuk mengisi kesenjangan tersebut, dilakukan penelitian terhadap buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris kelas IX SMP. Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan: (1) untuk mengetahui konstruksi gender dalam gambar visual yang terdapat pada buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris kelas IX SMP yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia; (2) menjelaskan representasi bias dan stereotip gender dalam gambar visual buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris kelas IX SMP yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan analisis tekstual yang dipadukan dengan analisis wacana. Dalam pengumpulan data, analisis tekstual untuk menganalisis representasi gender yang dikemukakan oleh Kress dan Van Leeuwen (2006) yang diadopsi oleh Painter dan Martin (2010) dan Van Leeuwen (2008) digunakan dan diadaptasi di beberapa bagian untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa (1) perempuan secara relatif dikonstruksi sedikit lebih dominan daripada laki-laki dalam buku pelajaran; (2) bias gender dan stereotip gender masih ditemukan dalam buku pelajaran. Di sini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada porsi yang berbeda dalam merepresentasikan gender dalam buku teks ini yang mengarah pada bias gender. Kemudian, hal ini juga mempengaruhi stereotip gender karena dibangun berdasarkan pandangan umum tentang berbagai karakteristik yang terkait dengan budaya dan perbedaan sosial antara laki-laki dan perempuan. Oleh karena itu, latar belakang sosiokultural penulis mempengaruhi mereka untuk menentukan isi buku pelajaran. In Indonesia, the awareness of gender equality in school textbooks still needs paying attention. As an attempt to fill this gap, the ninth grade ELT textbook of Junior High School was researched. This study has two objectives: (1) to find out the gender construction in visual images found in the ninth grade ELT textbook of Junior High School published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture; (2) to explain the representation of gender biasness and stereotyping in the visual images of the ninth grade ELT textbook of Junior High School published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This study is a qualitative research study that employed textual analysis combined with discourse analysis. In collecting the data, textual analysis for analyzing gender representation proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) adopted by Painter and Martin (2010) and Van Leeuwen (2008) was used and adapted in some parts to answer the research questions. The results revealed that (1) females relatively were constructed to be slightly more dominant than males in the textbook; (2) gender biasness and gender stereotypes were still found in the textbook. Here, it could be concluded that there were different portions in representing gender in this textbook which drove to the gender biasness. Then, it also affected gender stereotypes since they are constructed based on general views about the range of characteristics related to the culture and social divisions between males and females. Therefore, sociocultural background of the authors influenced them to determine the contents of the textbooks.

Abstract

Abstrak: This research examines the role of Islamic boarding schools in gender segregation, specifically focusing on the separation of men and women in Islamic education. A case study was conducted at Al-Falah Boarding School in Banjarbaru, Indonesia, using a descriptive-qualitative approach. The main findings indicate that gender segregation at Al-Falah Boarding School has positive impacts on learning, such as creating a focused learning environment and facilitating memorization of study materials without distractions from the opposite gender. Gender-based learning has been implemented in the study of Islamic jurisprudence (fikih). The role of the boarding school in the development of this separation is deemed effective, as evidenced by the achievements in personal and environmental development.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penulisan sejarah Banjar selalu saja didominasi oleh tema dan tokoh laki-laki. Oleh karena itu, perlu diimbangi dengan penulisan sejarah dengan tema dan tokoh perempuan agar tercipta sejarah yang androginus. Salah satu tokoh yang layak untuk ditulis adalah Ratu Zaleha, karena perlu diketahui latar belakang konstruksi sosial seorang perempuan yang mempunyai karakter tangguh itu sebagai bahan renungan untuk membentuk perempuan tangguh yang mampu bersaing dengan laki-laki pada masa sekarang. Untuk mengetahui hal itu, maka perlu dilakukan penelitian sejarah dengan melakukan proses heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, dan historiografi serta dibantu dengan pendekatan sosiologi gender. Dari metode sejarah dan pendekatan sosiologi gender itu diketahui bahwa pada tahun 1905-1906, Ratu Zaleha selalu berada di garis depan medan pertempuran sejajar dengan laki-laki seperti Gusti Muhammad Seman, Gusti Muhammad Arsyad, dan Panglima Batur. Adapun sebab Gusti Zaleha mampu melakukan peran gender yang setangguh ini dikarenakan konstruksi sosial berupa bubuhan Pagustian yang selalu siaga perang sejak 1863. Kata Kunci: Ratu Zaleha, Peran Gender, Perang Banjar, Hulu Barito Abstract: The writing of Banjar history has always been dominated by male themes and figures. Therefore, it is necessary to balance it with the writing of history with female themes and figures in order to create an androgynous history. One figure worthy of being written is Ratu Zaleha, as her social construction as a tough woman provides a reflective material to form tough women who can compete with men in today's era. To understand this, historical research needs to be conducted by using heuristic, critical, interpretive, and historiographic processes with the assistance of a gender sociology approach. From the historical method and gender sociology approach, it is known that in 1905-1906, Ratu Zaleha was always at the forefront of the battlefield alongside men such as Gusti Muhammad Seman, Gusti Muhammad Arsyad, and Panglima Batur. The reason why Ratu Zaleha was able to perform such a strong gender role was due to the social construction in the form of bubuhan Pagustian  who have been ready for war since 1863. Keywords: Ratu Zaleha, Gender Role, Banjar War, Hulu Barito

Abstract

The gender gap between male and female teenage authors causes considerable difficulty in literature. In this work, I employed qualitative research methods to unearth the intricate narratives of personal experiences masked by quantitative research approaches. I used a semi-structured interview format to talk with the participants about their ideas in greater detail. Five university students aged 17 to 19 took part in the study. According to the findings, the absence of gender equality in the writing development of male adolescents is a contributing factor to the gender gap that exists in male adolescents' writing growth. Male and female writing abilities differ significantly, severely impacting young males' educational and professional objectives. By learning more about the writing experiences of college-bound male teenagers, I could gain insights that could be used to improve educational policy and practice. Therefore, it is essential to understand male adolescents' writing identities and provide them with a voice. Additionally, it is essential to learn more about and comprehend the policies and practices that can assist in closing the gender success gap in writing practice.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of women in traditional coffee factories in remote areas of Indonesia. It employs the Power and representation analysis, phenomenological research, and “Representing Other” approach in Travel Literature to examine how people use a universal structure or essence to understand their experiences. It highlights the significance of women's involvement in the coffee industry, particularly those who have long been part of the field. The research specifically examines the contribution of women to the world of traditional coffee factories, using a case study of "Kopi Cap 3 Kunci" located in Barabai, Hulu Sungai Tengah, South Kalimantan. Its goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of women in the coffee industry and their contributions to traditional coffee practices. Furthermore, to identify the challenges faced by women in their participation of practices and explores strategies to promote gender equality and empower women in the coffee industry. The findings of this study have important implications for policy and practice, as they inform initiatives to enhance the participation and contributions of women in the coffee industry.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengulik diskursus gender di ranah film, yang akan difokuskan pada film “Dear David,” yang merekam kehidupan perempuan urban. Anggapan bahwa film adalah cerminan dinamika sosial di masyarakat Indonesia telah dianggap final. Menariknya, irisan antara agama, moral, dan perempuan cukup dominan dalam film-film bertema perempuan. Akan tetapi, beberapa tahun terakhir ini dunia sinema Indonesia bermunculan film tentang kehidupan perempuan yang mencoba keluar dari pakem tersebut. “Dear David” adalah salah satu film yang mengangkat sosok dan persoalan perempuan di tengah kehidupan modern, namun di saat bersamaan juga mencoba mendiskusikan ulang relasi antara moralitas, narasi agama, dan diskursus gender sekaligus. Pertanyaan utama artikel ini adalah Bagaimana citra dan visual perempuan di film Indonesia? Dan Bagaimana film Dear David dalam diskursus gender? Artikel ini didasarkan pada menganalisa visual, narasi, dan citra yang dibangun dalam film Dear David, dan juga mendalami beragam kritik, komentar, dan diskusi yang ditujukan pada film tersebut. Artikel ini mendapati bahwa diskursus gender dalam kehidupan perempuan yang divisualisasi lewat film Indonesia, mulai digambarkan selaras dengan realitas kehidupan sehari-hari para perempuan urban, seperti diskursus soal kesehatan mental, reproduksi, pendidikan seks, hingga kehidupan pribadi. Selain itu, faktor-faktor seperti agama, keluarga, lingkungan, hingga nilai-nilai tradisional mulai dicoba untuk didiskusikan ulang.

Abstract

Kajian Hadhrami di Indonesia telah berkembang pesat, namun sangat jarang menyentuh sisi perempuan, terlebih pada irisan dengan para jemaah perempuan. Artikel ini berfokus bagaimana penggunaan media sosial sebagai medium antara pendakwah dan jemaah yang sama-sama perempuan dari dua etnisitas yang berbeda, yakni Hadhrami dan Banjar. Adapun pertanyaan utama artikel ini adalah bagaimana media sosial menjadi medium persilangan budaya, irisan ajaran, hingga wadah berkomunikasi kelompok perempuan dari dua etnisitas yang berbeda? Dengan menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologi, data artikel ini diperoleh dari mengkaji konten media sosial dan mewawancarai beberapa pendakwah perempuan asal atau pernah bersekolah di Hadhrami, yang menjadi pendakwah di beberapa majelis taklim di wilayah Banjarmasin. Artikel ini mendapati media sosial adalah medium yang paling populer di majelis-majelis taklim perempuan. Selain itu, konten-konten di akun-akun majelis taklim tersebut diresepsi, direproduksi, hingga disebarluaskan kembali oleh para jemaah perempuan tanpa kontrol atau filter sama sekali. Hal ini disebabkan posisi pendakwah perempuan Hadhrami atau yang pernah bersekolah di Hadhramaut tersebut dianggap valid dan memiliki sanad bersambung hingga Nabi Muhammad Saw. Sehingga, seluruh konten biasanya tidak lagi dipertanyakan dan menjadi bagian dari keberagamaan dan tradisi keislaman lokal.

Abstract

Pendidikan agama merupakan hak anak dan urgen diberikan sedini mungkin karena berkenaan dengan kemanusiaan. Bukan semata ritual ibadah. Setiap individu berhak mengetahui ajaran agamanya. Pemenuhan hak pendidikan agama menjadi bagian dalam usaha perlindungan anak yang dilakukan oleh orangtua. Bagi keluarga dengan orangtua tunggal, pemenuhan hak ini bukanlah hal yang mudah. Karena mereka harus membagi fokus pada sektor domestik dan publik. Penelitian ini mengungkap pendidikan agama yang diberikan oleh orangtua tunggal kepada anak-anaknya dan juga mengulik kendala-kendala yang dihadapi oleh mereka. Adapun sasaran penelitian ini adalah ibu atau janda yang tinggal di wilayah kota Banjarmasin. Menjadi menarik karena angka pernikahan dini dan perceraian di Banjarmasin cukup tinggi. Penelitian dilakukan pada sampel dengan usia, profesi, dan latar pendidikan yang beragam. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi dan wawancara. Hasil wawancara dibandingkan dengan observasi yang dilakukan secara periodik untuk mengecek validitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa single parent cukup menyadari dan memperhatikan urgensi pendidikan agama bagi anak. Pendidikan agama diberikan secara langsung dan tidak langsung. Sedangkan kendala yang dihadapi ada 6, berkenaan dengan materi, psikologis dan spiritual.    Religious education is a child's right and it is urgent to give as early as possible, because it relates to humanity. For single parent, fulfilling this right is not an easy thing. They have to divide the focus on the domestic and public sectors. The aims of this research is to find out about the religious education given by single parents to their children and also to explore the obstacles faced by them. The target of this research was mothers (widows) who live in Banjarmasin. It becomes interesting because the rate of early marriage and divorce in Banjarmasin is quite high. The research was conducted on samples of various ages, professions and educational backgrounds. Data collection techniques using observation and interviews. The results showed that single parents are pay attention to the urgency of religious education for children. There are 6 obstacles faced, with regard to material, psychological and spiritual.

Abstract

Sebagian besar masyarakat kota Banjarmasin yang tinggal di pesisir sungai masih sangat tergantung pada sungai untuk melakukan berbagai aktivitas sehari-hari seperti mandi, mencuci, memasak serta MCK dan peran perempuan sering dihubungkan atas tugas-tugas domestik yang berhubungan langsung dengan sungai. Namun, diketahui bahwa saat ini kondisi sungai di Kota Banjarmasin masuk dalam kategori tercemar berat. Hal tersebut menarik untuk diteliti yaitu bagaimana kesadaran lingkungan dan relasi gender masyarakat di pesisir sungai kota Banjamasin. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan tehnik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi partisipasif, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi masyarakat terhadap kondisi sungai saat ini sangat memprihatinkan dan sadar akan bahaya yang ditimbulkan, kebiasaan masyarakat terhadap kebersihan lingkungan diketahui berbeda-beda tergantung SDM yang ada didaerah tersebut, serta relasi gender menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pembagian peran yang adil antara pria dan wanita dalam rangka menjaga kebersihan lingkungan. The majority of the population living along the riverbanks in Banjarmasin city are highly dependent on the river for their daily activities such as bathing, washing clothes, cooking, and defecating. On the other hand, it is known that the river water quality in Banjarmasin is heavily polluted, with the worst pollution coming from toilet waste. It is surprising that the river, which is already polluted, is still being used by the riverbank communities for their daily needs. Based on this, researchers were interested in understanding the perceptions, habits, and extent of environmental awareness and gender relations of the riverbank communities in Banjarmasin. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques such as participatory observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the community's perception of the current condition of the river is very concerning and they are aware of the dangers posed by the pollution. The community's habits regarding environmental cleanliness vary depending on the human resources available in the area. Gender relations show that there is a fair division of roles between men and women in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

Abstract

The value of local wisdom in the Sasak community on the island of Lombok has shifted away from the awik-awik tradition. This shift is believed to have contributed to the high rate of early marriage. The researcher aims to investigate whether the awik-awik tradition is the cause of early marriage practices, using Anthony Giddens' theory of legal awareness and structuration as a framework. This qualitative research employs interview and documentation methods to gather data. The study's findings suggest that the awareness of the law of 'awik-awik' among the Sasak people, particularly minors, is very low. This is supported by the number of young people who intentionally violate 'awik-awik' by getting married without their parents' permission or blessing. Furthermore, there is a close relationship between the perpetrators of early marriage (agents) and the structure of this violation of 'awik-awik'. Agents are under the authority of community and religious leaders, such as the dusun head, RT, and penghulu. If someone violates the awik-awik, these leaders are the first to take action. Violating the awik-awik is considered a disgrace, especially for minors, who may be forced into marriage as a result. It is important to note that minors who violate the awik-awik have no choice but to marry, as this is a legitimate sanction according to the awik-awik.
