Abstract

Purpose: This article reviews the theoretical foundations, methodologies, and applications of emotional design, a concept that emphasizes the importance of creating an emotional connection between users and products. The article provides an overview of the three levels of emotional design - visceral, behavioral, and reflective - and their underlying principles. Research methods: Deep and comprehensive review of literature from multidiscipline field of studies related to emotional design conducted with retrospective reasoning. The article then provides an overview of various applications of emotional design in product design and visual communication design, including digital interfaces, automotive design, and healthcare. The article concludes by discussing the future directions of emotional design research and its potential impact on the design industry. Findings: Emotional design is a promising approach to product design and visual communication design that can enhance the user experience by creating an emotional connection between users and products. The three levels of emotional design and various research methodologies can be used to measure emotional responses to design. Implications: Emotional design has been applied in various industries, and its potential impact on the design industry is significant. Future research in emotional design can explore the interplay between the different levels of emotional design and its impact on user behavior and product success.

Abstract

Purpose: Instagram is one of the social media with a very large number of users, namely 1.3 billion users. The huge number of users is utilized by several media including Radar Bali, a well-known media in Bali using Instagram as a medium for disseminating information and news. Research methods: This research uses observation, visual analysis, and literature study to dissect and find out the design components of Radar Bali's Instagram feed. The research methodology used is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Findings: The result of the research shows that Radar Bali does not apply design rules properly and consistently. Implications: By not applying design rules to Radar Bali's Instagram feed, the message and information are not maximized.

Abstract

Purpose: Visit Beautiful West Sumatra (VBWS) is an activation program for post-pandemic tourist visits which has become the starting point for the revival of tourism in West Sumatra. One of the important points in this activation program is the identity design in the form of a logo. This study aimed to analyze the Visit Beautiful West Sumatra 2023 logo work through a visual semiotics approach. Research methods: This study is qualitative using descriptive methods. Findings: The results showed that the logo has layers of expression/senses (signifier) ??and layers of meaning/perception (signified) with the spirit of synergy, collaboration, and innovation. Implications: The logo, as part of the identity, has been implemented for West Sumatra tourism stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose: This paper aims to reflect on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in works of art, examining its impact on the creative process, aesthetics, and audience reception, then provide a critical reflection on the use of AI in works of art, examining its potential benefits and drawbacks and exploring the ethical considerations involved. The paper examines the use of AI in works of art, with a focus on the methodologies and case studies that demonstrate the potential and challenges of this emerging field. Research methods: The paper presents case studies of notable artworks that utilize AI, discusses the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in art, and explores the ethical considerations involved. Through a review of the literature and analysis of six case studies, we explore the aesthetic, technical, and social dimensions of AI-generated art, as well as the ethical and critical debates surrounding its production and reception. Findings: The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of critical engagement and continued reflection on the use of AI in art. Our findings suggest that AI can offer new modes of creative expression and engagement, but also raise questions about the role of human agency and interpretation in the artistic process. Implications: AI-generated art offers new opportunities and challenges for artists, scholars, and audiences, and that future research should focus on developing ethical guidelines, exploring collaborative practices, and examining the social and political implications of AI-based art. Case studies of AI-generated art can help us understand the potentials and limitations of this field by providing specific examples of how AI is being used to create art, and how artists and audiences are engaging with these works. These studies can provide insights into the creative processes, technical challenges, and social implications of AI-generated art.

Abstract

Purpose: The elderly are a part of society that deserves to be honoured. Various service activities have been carried out during the productive age. The logo design requested by the Werdha Priyamitra elderly group is a tribute to its role in mobilizing other elderly people in North Kuta District. Research methods: The method in designing the logo of the Werdha Priyamitra elderly group was carried out with the stages of observation, interviews, digital literature review and evaluation. Observation is intended to explore the activities of the elderly group. The interview is a process of extracting deeper data from the beginning of its establishment until its existence in 2023. Digital literature review to gain knowledge and inspiration in logo design. Findings: Every design stage constantly evaluates by the management of the Werdha Priyamitra elderly group so that the logo design is as expected. Based on the final logo design results, design elements in lines, fields, and colours represent the culture and activities of the Werdha Priyamitra elderly group. Implications: These design elements are supported by text that contains the slogan of the Werdha Priyamitra elderly group. The logo design is made by considering the proportion of design elements and text to keep the intensity of complexity manageable.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explain the form of integration of Balinese, Chinese and European ornaments in the architecture of Puri Agung Karangasem. Research methods: A qualitative descriptive method was implemented to explain the integration of ornaments in the architecture of Puri Agung Karangasem. Data collection techniques are observation, interviews, and documentation, while the data sources are ornaments on the architecture of the palace heritage, cultural experts, and community leaders. The Penglingsir Puri (Palace’s Elders) and Abdi Dalem Puri (Palace’s Courtiers) are key informants. Findings: The results showed that the forms of ornaments found at Puri Agung Karangasem could be divided into three, namely ornaments in traditional Balinese, Chinese, and European styles, resulting in a combination of the typical ornament forms of Puri Agung Karangasem. The three styles of ornament were integrated with each other, then developed by Balinese artists to create patra cina, patra olanda, karang sae, karang bentulu, and the visualization of a crowned lion as it is known today. Other integrations can be seen in the technique of making ornaments using casting techniques. Implications: The rulers of Puri Agung Karangasem in ancient times had cultural relations with people from China and Europe, reflected in the visualization of the integration of carved ornaments into the palace’s architecture.

Abstract

Purpose: In animated films, posters serve as a means to convey story illustrations. The visuals of the poster become an attraction for the audience or fans. Signs help the audience understand the purpose and message to be given. The information content of animated film works can be displayed through carefully arranged images or text and apply elements of art and art principles to create beauty. Research methods: To deepen the understanding of the value of beauty contained in the poster that is the focus of the research, the author analyses the illustrations presented through the description of aesthetic elements and principles concerning Herbert Read's objective theory. This article describes the accurate beauty values reflected in the objects in the poster of "Si Juki The Movie, Committee for the End of Days. This article presents a conclusion about aesthetics that can be identified through the elements and principles of aesthetics contained in the work. Findings:Film posters have the potential as a means to disseminate information using aesthetically designed illustrations of images and text. Through applying aesthetic elements and principles, movie posters can create a value of beauty that visualising shapes, colours, and motifs can easily understand. Based on the analysis, the animated movie poster "Si Juki The Movie" has a beauty implied in the aesthetic elements contained in the shapes, colours, and motifs displayed on the sign. Implications: The results of this research are expected to increase public knowledge about the elements and principles of aesthetics interpreted through objective beauty in an animated film poster work.

Abstract

Purpose: Legong Kreasi Aras Kembang Windhu is an artwork inspired by the mythology surrounding Tukad Bindu. This stream is considered a symbol of the greatness of the creator, representing tenderness in maintaining the purity, cleanliness, and sustainability of water sources as the breath of life. The purpose of this work is to unite aesthetic creativity and history, making Tukad Bindu a source of deep inspiration that reflects the aesthetic imagination of nature and explores Hindu mythological sources related to the beauty of tourist attractions in Denpasar City. Research methods: The method of creating this dance work adopts the angripta-sesolahan approach by I Ketut Suteja through several stages, which include planning, joint prayer rituals, material selection, formation of improvised motion results, and the first performance for evaluation. Findings: The result of the creation of Legong Kreasi Aras Kembang Windhu is a dance work that describes the philosophy of water mythology and relates it to the natural history of Tukad Bindu. The alignment of the history of white and yellow Julit fish in Tukad Bindu is the basis for the depiction of human life in this performance. Through this performance, it is hoped that people can better understand and appreciate the importance of preserving nature, especially water and river areas, and promote awareness of sustainability and natural beauty in harmony. Implications: Basically, Legong Kreasi Aras Kembang Windhu is not just a work of art for a prestigious art event but also a tribute to cultural heritage and an innovative attempt to introduce it to the public uniquely and interestingly.

Abstract

Purpose: The Renteng dance in Saren I Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali has a very simple form. As a work of art, this dance does not explicitly show beautiful power, but implicitly, it can create beauty based on the qualities it has. This research aims to reveal, describe and understand the aesthetics of the Renteng dance in Saren I Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali. Research methods: The method used in this research is qualitative utilizing data collection techniques in the form of observation and documentation. The results of this research show that the aesthetics of the Renteng dance in Saren I Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali can be seen through unity, diversity, and intensity. Findings: The aesthetics contained in the Renteng dance through its three beautiful characteristics illustrate that no matter how simple the dance is, it will still create an aesthetic experience. The aesthetic experience of this dance can be seen through the unity of the elements or forming elements which are intertwined as a whole and single, and have a strong detailed effect that is carried out repetitively to create harmony. Implications: The aesthetics contained in the Renteng dance in Saren I Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali, through the three characteristics of beauty that have been discussed, illustrate that no matter how simple or simple the dance is, it will still create an aesthetic experience. The aesthetic experience of the Renteng dance in Saren I Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali can be seen through the unity of the elements or forming elements which are woven wholly and singly, and have a strong detailed effect which is carried out repetitively, thus creating harmony.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to design main characters for pixel graphics game entitled “Panji Tales” based on characters depicted in the scenes at Javanese temples’ bas relief. Research methods: General design methods is used for this research. This method consists of identification, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Findings: Result of this research are character design for four main characters of the game consist of turn around view for each character. Designed characters depicts their body shapes, clothing, jewelleries, and hairstyles derived from bas relief into pixel art form. In addition to depiction in pixel art form, designed characters also adjusted to make them possible to be animated. Also, for that purpose, walk cycle animations are made as example how the characters are animated. Implications: Finalized character design will be used as guidlines for main characters’ animation in game currently being developed.
