Abstract

Moral education (doutoku kyouiku) is fundamental in shaping students’ characters so that they become independent individuals who are able to adapt to their social environment in accordance with the values that prevail in society. This article aims to examine the implementation of moral education at the elementary education level in Japan, as well as its integration into kyuushoku (school lunch) activities. This study uses a literature review method based on curriculum documents, education regulations, and previous research results. The results show that moral education (doutoku kyouiku) and school lunch practices (kyuushoku) in primary and secondary education in Japan are designed in an integrated manner, with doutoku providing a framework of values and kyuushoku embodying them in shared meals that cultivate responsibility, discipline, gratitude, ecological awareness, and cross-cultural openness. Kyuushoku has evolved from a nutritional fulfillment program into a hidden curriculum that integrates moral values, health, national identity, and sustainability through shokuiku policies and inter-ministerial collaboration. The integration of the two at the compulsory education level makes doutoku–kyuushoku a driving force in shaping the character of Japanese citizens who are healthy, locally rooted yet cosmopolitan, and contribute to the development of Japan’s social capital.

Abstract

Video games, especially the roleplay game (RPG) genre, have evolved into an effective popular culture medium for representing and transmitting cultural values. This study aims to uncover and analyze the cultural representation of the Japanese New Year celebration (Shōgatsu) found in the roleplay game Ensemble Stars. Although Japanese culture is globally well-known, the deep understanding of the meaning and values behind it among the global community remains limited. Therefore, this research assesses the extent to which this game can serve as an accurate reference for cultural understanding. The research method used is content analysis through observation of in-game content. Data analysis was performed using the Edgar H. Schein cultural model, which divides cultural elements into three levels: artifacts (tangible culture), espoused values, and basic assumptions (intangible culture). Data were collected by identifying and recording storyline elements, decorations, and character interactions related to the Japanese New Year celebration. The results show that Ensemble Stars successfully and accurately represents the Japanese New Year culture, encompassing both tangible aspects (such as osechi and kadomatsu) and intangible aspects (such as the hatsumōde tradition and the value of togetherness). This representation functions as an effective cultural transmission medium, helping global players understand the values and meaning behind the traditions, and indirectly contributing to Japan's tourism promotion strategy.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the manifestation of idioms and the Equivalent strategies eploed by the translator in the manga Barakamon (volume 1-5) from Japanese into Indonesian. The analysis of idiom Equivalent strategies was conducted through four comprehensive levels: above word level, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic. Utilizing contextual and semantic analysis, the study identified a total of 47 idioms within the source text. The findings reveal that the manifestation of idioms is dominated by metaphorical expressions rooted in psychological and anatomical elements. Linguistically, these idioms tend to undergo shifts toward more functional and pragmatic meanings in the Indonesian translation. Based on the frequency of Equivalent strategies, the pragmatic level emerged as the most dominant (28), followec by above word level (18), grammatical (18), adn textual (9). This phenomenon underscores that the translator prioritizes dynamic Equivalent, naturalness, and contextual suitability within the target culture over preserving the lexical forms of the source language. This approach ensures that the emotional and cultural nuances of the manga are accurately conveyed to the local audience.
