Abstract

The film "Memories of Matsuko" (2006), directed by Tetsuya Nakashima from Japan, explores the tragic life of its main character, Matsuko, and features a unique dramatic narrative enriched by diverse Japanese visual aesthetics. This study aims to reveal how Japanese aesthetics are reflected in the film, particularly through themes of sadness and suffering articulated in the narrative and visual elements. A qualitative approach with descriptive analytical methods was employed, involving stages such as a literature review on Japanese aesthetics, in-depth analysis of the film focusing on Keene's (1969) theories of wabi-sabi and mono no aware, and the compilation of research findings. The results indicate that Japanese aesthetics such as wabi-sabi and mono no aware are subtly reflected in the film's thematic scenes, which are dominated by emotional complexity and the situations experienced by the protagonist, Matsuko. Through these aesthetics, the beauty in imperfection and the ephemerality of elusive happiness are revealed. Moreover, the film presents conflict and resolutions not through dramatic outbursts, but through calm expressions and acceptance of bitter realities. This reflects the interaction between beauty and functionality in Japanese aesthetics. The integration of Japanese aesthetics along with its paradoxes offers a more varied perspective in depicting the tragedy experienced by its character.

Abstract

This study analyzes code-switching and code-mixing in Jirō Asada's novel Poppoya, focusing on the Hokkaido dialect. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing both oral and written data extracted from the novel. Data collection involved thorough reading of the novel, noting sentences containing the Hokkaido dialect, translating these sentences, and categorizing conversations into code-switching and code-mixing groups. The analysis identified two main types of code-switching: internal code-switching and code-mixing, with variations in situational and metaphorical contexts. Code-mixing included original Japanese language elements in 37 instances. Causes of internal code-switching comprised changes in speaker, interlocutor, situation, and conversation topic, while code-mixing was influenced by role identification, mother tongue equivalence, and speaker habits. Examples of code-switching included transitioning to standard Japanese for a relaxed atmosphere, while code-mixing highlighted regional identity through the use of the Hokkaido dialect. The analysis underscores the impact of situational changes, social identity, and speaker habits on code-switching and code-mixing, reflecting the complexity of language in Japan's multicultural society.

Abstract

家制度/ Ieseido is a Japanese family system that emerged and grew in the Edo period and ended in the Showa period. Ieseido lasted from the Edo period to the Showa period, so it is often represented in the manga, one of which is found in a manga set in the Meiji to Showa period entitled Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon (Watakon) by Kōsaka Rito and Agitogi Akumi. This article uses a descriptive qualitative method with Stuart Hall’s representation theory. The results show that there is a representation of the concept of Ieseido in the Watakon manga. Traditional Japanese values related to the concept of Ieseido, such as loyalty to family, social hierarchy, and gender roles are explicitly shown in the manga panels. The analysis also shows the importance of understanding representation not only as a passive reflection of reality but also as an active construction that impacts how identity and social relations are perceived.

Propaganda was practiced through literary content, visuals, caricatures, and other forms of media. This study aims to analyze the titles and themes of songs in Djawa Baroe used as propaganda tools by the Japanese to mobilize the Indonesian population during the occupation from 1943 to 1945. A quantitative approach with descriptive analysis was used to examine the propaganda songs in Djawa Baroe (1943-1945). Primary data in the form of song lyrics were obtained from the Digital Library of Leiden University, Netherlands, with a total of 43 songs. Abstract

Linguistics is a discipline that delves into various aspects of language, including the formation, usage, and articulation of language by its speakers. Linguistics helps us to understand the mechanisms behind language formation, the reasons for its use, and how language is articulated within society. This study analyzes continuum words that appear in news articles on the NHK NEWS website in May 2024, with the aim of exploring the processes of word formation and conducting a morphophonemic analysis of these words. Using a qualitative approach, eight continuum words were analyzed to uncover the formation of morphemes and their meanings. The results indicate that these continuum words combine kango and gairaigo, without wago, effectively condensing complex concepts into concise terms for media communication. The morphophonemic analysis reveals sound changes and zero morphophonemics, reflecting the efficiency of the Japanese language in summarizing complex concepts. Further research is recommended to explore the flexibility of the Japanese language in other contexts.

Abstract

The phenomenon of hikonka in Japan, or the tendency of young people not to marry, has been a crucial social issue in Japan since the 1950s, which is heavily influenced by socio-economic and socio-cultural factors. This study aims to reveal the factors causing hikonka through the Japanese drama Kekkon Aite wa Chusen de (2018) using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic method. The data analyzed is the main narrative of the drama to identify what factors can be signaled as the cause of hikonka. The research findings show that the hikonka phenomenon in Japan via drama is influenced by the arranged marriage policy imposed by the Japanese government to address the declining birth rate. This policy, which is intended to help overcome hikonka, has the opposite effect, causing social tension because it ignores individual freedom in choosing a life partner. Secondly, the appearance of the main character Miyasaka Tatsuhiko who has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) such as otaku and introvert, which reflects that the occurrence of hikonka in Japan is also affected by the mental health of its youth. Thirdly, hikonka is also influenced by the existence of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, which makes it difficult to find a mate and especially to fulfill the demands of arranged marriages imposed by the government.

Abstract

This study examines the comparisons of standard Japanese and Hakata dialects used in the movie Hanachan no Misoshiru. It aims to identify and analyze the linguistic forms of Hakata dialects and understand the differences in meaning and usage compared to standard Japanese. The design used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, and the data is collected through observation of dialog in the film. The data collected was then classified based on word class groups. The results show that the dialectal variety in jodoushi is found in verb patterns (-tou), which are comparable to standard Japanese in the form of sounds (chouon or long vowel sounds), and abbreviation of phonemes. The word classification in the form of keiyoushi or adjectives is found in the form of additional patterns of the final word (-ka), which undergoes word formation, namely the omission of sounds and the addition of phonemes.
