Abstract

This study aims to investigate the derived features of the suffixes -chin (賃), -kin (金), and -hi (費) in the corpus of Mainichi Shinbun and Minami Nihon Shinbun electronic newspapers over nearly one year. Within more than 20,000 sentences containing these three suffixes, this study reveals the important role of terms related to cost, funds, and expenses in Japanese public discourse. The analysis was conducted to understand the context in which each suffix used, identify its usage pattern, and distinguish its specific meaning. The results show that -chin (賃) suffix is often used for service fees or rent, -kin (金) suffix relates to funds or money in formal contexts, while -hi (費) suffix refers to expenses or costs in general contexts. The results also highlight the sensitivity of language to economic and social issues, while providing in-depth insights into the construction of Japanese in mass media. This research contributes to studying Japanese linguistics, particularly in understanding the function of suffixes in word formation and information delivery in the public sphere.

Abstract

Criticism plays a crucial role in improving individual and team performance and addressing shortcomings in workplace processes. However, the way criticism is delivered significantly impacts how it is received. This study examines politeness strategies in delivering criticism in Japanese workplaces, drawing on Nguyen's (2005) politeness theory. Using the Discourse Completion Test (DCT) method, the study involved 25 students from the Japanese Literature Program at Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who work in Japan. The findings reveal that direct criticism is rarely used in Japanese workplaces as it risks disrupting wa (harmony) and causing embarrassment, particularly in formal or peer relationships. Direct criticism is employed only in urgent situations or within hierarchical relationships, characterized by explicit, firm language aimed at immediate correction. Conversely, indirect criticism is more prevalent, utilizing linguistic strategies such as suggestions, invitations, or questions to maintain politeness and relational stability. From a sociopragmatic perspective, cultural norms, status hierarchies, and social contexts influence the choice of criticism strategies. From a pragmalinguistic perspective, subtle and implicit linguistic elements are effective in preserving harmony and avoiding confrontation. The study concludes that the success of delivering criticism relies on balancing communicative effectiveness with maintaining harmonious workplace relationships.

Abstract

It can be said that there are quite a lot of Japanese idol fans in Indonesia, especially among young adults aged 18-29 years. This research analyzes the consumer behavior of fans of the idol group AKB48 using a case study of Japanese Language and Literature students at Airlangga University. Japanese Language and Literature students are relevant to research because their average age is 18-29 years. The researcher assumes that Japanese Language and Literature students can represent a group of young adults who have an interest in Japanese popular culture. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach. Determining the informants themselves used snowball sampling and four informants were obtained. Data collection techniques in this research used in-depth interview. The data found was analyzed through Jean Baudrillard's theory of consumerism. The results of the research show that there is consumptive behavior carried out by the four Japanese Language and Literature students who are fans of AKB48. Visible consumer behavior includes buying products promoted by AKB48 members, collecting goods and knick-knacks from AKB48, collecting DVDs/CDs, watching online and offline concerts, attending fan meetings, and holding birthday celebrations for AKB48 members and others.

Abstract

This research examines how humor speech strategies are used in the comedy variety of Manzai Japan and Double Act Indonesia, focusing on the humor discourse that appears in the dialogue of the M-1 Grand Prix 2022 show and the Duo Komedian 2021 competition. The method used is qualitative discourse analysis, by identifying linguistic and rhetorical patterns that form humor in both shows. The data collected was then transcribed into text form, and then analyzed using the four-dimensional theory of discourse. The findings show that although both forms of comedy use similar humor strategies such as self-deprecation, humor targeted at the interlocutor, and third-party references, there are important differences in their execution and cultural nuances. Japanese Manzai often relies on quick exchanges and logical absurdity, while Indonesian double acts often use expressive gestures and socially relevant humor topics. Through Manzai plays, the Japanese tend to be more subtle and polite, whereas overly offensive humor is less likely to be accepted. While Indonesians are more expressive and open in using humor.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the Oedipus Complex in the character Tamura Kafka in the novel "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami. This research is a qualitative descriptive study, and the data collection process uses observation and note-taking methods. The theory used in this research is Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory. The results of the study found that the attachment between Tamura Kafka and his mother during the oral and anal stages led Tamura Kafka to an Oedipus Complex crisis when entering the phallic stage. During the phallic stage, Tamura Kafka experienced conflicts with both of his parents, resulting in estrangement between him and his parents. Consequently, Tamura Kafka was trapped in an internal conflict due to the unfulfilled desire towards his mother as the primary object during the phallic stage. Additionally, Tamura Kafka's lack of identification with both of his parents led to an unresolved Oedipus Complex crisis. The lack of resolution of the Oedipus Complex crisis in Tamura Kafka resulted in a tendency towards Oedipus Complex neurosis during his adolescence.

Abstract

Wasei Eigo is a form of Japanese-specific English created by Japanese people by adopting and modifying vocabulary from the origila language. Wasei eigo can be learned through digital media, particularly through videos on channels such as YouTube, This study examines the phenomenon of meaning transfer in wasei eigo and its use on the Nihonggo Mantappu YouTube channel. The objective of this study is to identify the types of wasei eigo that appear and analyze the forms and processes of meaning transfer that occur. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic analysis approach. Data was collected from video transcripts on the Nihongo Mantappu channel that contain the use of wasei eigo. The results of the study show that meaning transfer occurs through various mechanism, such as narrowing, broadening, or deviating from the original English meaning. This phenomenon reflects the linguictic and cultural dynamics within Japanese society and demonstrates how digital media plays a role in disseminating forms of language that have undergone local adaptation. Additionally, this study is expected to contribute to linguistic research, particularly in the fields of semantics and Japanese sociolinguistics.

Abstract

Abstract This research is entitled "Perlocutionary Effects of Commissive Speech Act in Drama Boku no Satsui ga Koi wo Shita”. This study aims to analyze how the function of commissive speech act such as promising, refusing, threatening and offering are used by speakers, the form of locution uttered by the speaker, the illocutionary meaning contained in the speech, and how the use of these functions affects the attitudes, actions, and responses of the interlocutor in interactions between characters. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a listening and note-taking technique in data collection. The theories used include the speech act theory by Austin (1962), the classification of commissive speech act by Yule (1996), and the perlocutionary effect theory by Kartika (2014). The results of the study showed that there were 11 commissive speech act data consisting of four functions, namely promising (3 instances), refusing (1 instance), threatening (6 instances), and offering (1 instance). The threatening function is the most dominant, while the refusing and offering functions appear the least. The perlocutionary effects that arise vary, with more positive responses found in the promising, threatening, and offering functions, while the refusing function tends to cause negative reactions. This study shows that commissive speech acts are not only used to convey the speaker's commitment, but also impact diverse perlocutions of the interlocutor. Keywords: commissive speech act, Japanese drama, perlocutionary effects, speech acts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the increasing trend of suicide among Japanese teenagers since the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental health of people around the world, including Japan. According to data from the National Police Agency of Japan, the number of youth suicides (aged 15-19) in Japan remains at a record high and is showing an alarming trend. Contributing factors include school problems, health problems, and family problems. To analyse this phenomenon, this study uses Emile Durkheim's suicide theory approach, which classifies suicide into four types, namely egoistic, altruistic, fatalistic, and anomic. This research uses a qualitative research method through a literature study approach. The results showed that the pandemic had exacerbated suicide factors, especially the anomic and fatalistic types of Durkheim's suicide theory. Academic pressure, family expectations, and Japanese cultural norms amid social isolation interact to create conditions for adolescents who are vulnerable to the pressures of these two types of suicide. The increase in suicide rates among Japanese adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic reflects the complexity of the social and psychological crisis facing the younger generation.

Abstract

Traditional riddle games such as nazonazo in Japan and tatarucingan in Sunda, Indonesia, have long been used as a means of entertainment and language and cultural education, but have not been studied in depth in terms of comparative form and thematic vocabulary meaning. This study aims to analyze the similarities and differences in linguistic form, as well as the meaning and cultural implications of these riddles. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data consisting of 28 nazonazo riddles collected online and 19 tatarucingan from books, as well as interviews with Sundanese informants, which were then analyzed using matching and distribution methods to find lexical patterns and linguistic structures. The results show that both nazonazo and tatarucingan prioritize everyday vocabulary and wordplay techniques based on puns, double meanings, and light creative logic. However, nazonazo offers more phonetic variations, visual characters, and foreign loanwords with global nuances, while tatarucingan emphasizes closeness to local experiences, exploration of sounds, and concrete metaphors and comparisons to everyday reality. These findings show that the tradition of wordplay in both cultures not only provides entertainment, but also plays an important role as a medium of education, inheritance of values, and formation of the unique social identity of each community.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the psychological aspects of the main character in Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel Musashi, using Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory. Using qualitative descriptive methods and a literary psychology approach, this study analyses how Musashi’s life struggles illustrate his efforts to fulfil the five levels of human needs, namely physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The results show that Musashi’s character development is a complex and gradual process, beginning with his efforts to survive physically after the war, his search for moral purpose through the guidance of Takuan Soho, his inner conflict regarding his relationship with Otsu, and concluding with his search for recognition through the battles he fought. The culmination of this achievement is when Musashi realizes that the true victory is not defeating opponents but controlling oneself. This understanding underwent a comprehensive psychological change in line with the fulfilment of needs at each level of Maslow’s hierarchy. With a literary psychology approach, Musashi is not only understood as a story revolving around battle and honour, but also as an existential narrative about a person struggling to achieve self-recognition. This research offers a deeper insight into the relationship between psychology and literature, demonstrating that fictional characters created by authors can illustrate the dynamics of personality that humans also experience in general.
