Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are very important in leaming mathematics in schools, because mathematical communication skills are one of the abilities that every student must have and are also a tool that can be used to solve problems, especially math problems. The purpose of this study was to describe the mathematical communication skills of high-ability students, medium-capable students, and low-ability students in solving math problems in class VII SMP Negeri 31 Padang for the 2019/2020 academic year. The subjects of this study were 31 students of class VII-5 SMP Negeri 31 Padang. The data used is the result of an assessment of the student's answer sheet on the daily assessment of the linear equation and inequality material for one variable using a rubric for indicators of mathematical communication skills. Students' mathematical communication skills are measured based on indicators of mathematical communication skills, namely (1) expressing mathematical ideas in writing; (2) explain mathematical ideas, strategies, situations and relations in writing using algebra; (3) use complete sentences, symbols, tables, diagrams or other media to clarify the situation or problem. The results show (1) The most prominent indicator for highly skilled students is the first indicator, while the least prominent indicator for highly skilled students is the third indicator; (2) The most prominent indicator for moderately capable students is the first indicator, while the least prominent indicator for highly skilled students is the third indicator; (3) The most prominent indicator for low-skilled students is the first indicator, while the least prominent indicator for highly skilled students is the second indicatoKeywords - Mathematical communication skills, Mathematics

Abstract

The study of mathematics aims to teach pupils how to solve mathematical problems. However, kids' problem-solving skills remain poor. This is because the learning paradigm employed to increase pupils' mathematical problem-solving skills is insufficient. Problem-based learning is one solution. This study reviews the development and effects of Problem Based Learning (PBL) on mathematics problem-solving skills. Descriptive and quasi-experimental methods were used in this posttest-only non-equivalent control group study. This study included 2022/2023 SMP Negeri 13 Padang grade VIII students. The experimental class, VIII.5, was sampled, while the control class, VIII.4, was randomly picked. It included quizzes and a final exam. The hypothesis test for the final exam, which yielded a P-value of 0.000, and the mean quizzes showed that Problem-Based Learning improved students' problem-solving skills.Keywords– Problem Based Learning Model, Conventional Model, Mathematical Problem Solving Ability

Abstract

One of the goals of learning mathematics in schools is that students have good mathematical problem-solving abities. Mathematical problem-solving abilities of students is the cognitive abilities of students in solving problems, one of which can be seen from the answers given by students to the problem given. One theory that can classify students' answers in solving mathematical problems is the Taxonomy Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO).SOLO Taxonomy classifies the level of ability of students' answers to problems into five levels, namely pre-structural level, unistructural level, multistructural level, relational level, and extended abstract level. This study aims to describe and analyze students' mathematical problem solving abilities based on SOLO taxonomy in class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Padang.The type of research conducted is descriptive with the taking of research subjects using purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques used are tests, interviews, and observations while the analytical techniques used for this research are descriptive analysis and data triangulation. The results of the research on mathematical problem-solving abilities of students based on SOLO taxonomy shows that students in the upper group have mathematical problem-solving abilities at the relational level, students who are in the middle group have mathematical problem-solving abilities at the unistructural, multistructural level, and relational level, as well as students who are in the lack groups have mathematical problem-solving abilities at the level of prestructural and unistructural level. Abstract

Based on the results of preliminary research, it is known that in the learning process students are fixated on the use of LKS purchased from publishers, this has not optimized students to be able to think critically, be able to connect science with the real world, mastery of technology and information, which is a 21st century learning paradigm. based on advances in technology and science. Therefore, a teaching material in the form of a STEM-based LKPD was designed on the set material. Abstract

Mathematical problem solving is one of the mathematical abilities that must be mastered by students as stated in Permendikbud No. 58 of 2014. However, in reality the mathematical problem solving abilities of students at SMA Negeri 1 Bukittinggi are still not optimal. One reason is students who tend to be passive in learning. This resulted in student learning outcomes are also low. Therefore, a study was conducted by applying the discovery learning model to improve students' mathematical problem solving abilities. The purpose of this study was to find out and describe whether the mathematical problem solving abilities of students who learn using the discovery learning model are better than students who learn using conventional learning models in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Bukittinggi.This type of research is a quasi-experimental research with a research design that is static group design. The population of this study were students of class XI at SMA Negeri 1 Bukittinggi with the research sample being class XI IPS 1 as the experimental class and class XI IPS 3 as the control class. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling, where each member of the population has the same opportunity to be sampled. The research instrument used is the final test of solving mathematical problems.Based on data analysis using U Mann Whitney with a significance level of 0.05, a  is obtained, which is smaller than α = 0.05, which means that H0 is rejected. Then, after analyzing the results of the final problem solving test, the average value of the experimental class was higher than the average value of the control class. Thus it can be concluded that the mathematical problem solving abilities of students who learn using the discovery learning model are better than students who learn using conventional learning in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Bukittinggi.Keywords–Learning Model, Discovery Learning, Problem Solving

Abstract

The first goal of learning mathematics is understanding mathematical concepts. Based on observations made in class VII SMP Negeri 31 Padang in the 2019/2020 Academic Year, it was found that students' understanding of mathematical concepts was still low. This can be seen from the acquisition of the completeness of the Daily Assessment of Mathematics for Grade VII students of SMP Negeri 31 Padang for the 2019/2020 academic year. Therefore we need a learning model that can overcome these problems. One learning model that can improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts is the Think Pair Share type cooperative learning model. The purpose of this study was to theoretically describe whether the Think Pair Share (TPS) type of cooperative learning can improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts. This type of research is a literature study on improving understanding of mathematical concepts through the TPS-type cooperative learning model. Abstract

Acquiring proficiency in mathematical problem solving is a crucial objective for students in their study of mathematics. However, the actual mathematical problem-solving proficiency of seventh-grade students at SMP IT Madani Islamic School Payakumbuh is still comparatively deficient. This is evident from the preliminary examination outcomes of students who have demonstrated inadequate proficiency in effectively resolving mathematical issues, as indicated by their mathematical problem-solving aptitude. To address these challenges, one possible solution is to implement a problem-based learning (PBL) flipbook learning approach. The research methodology employed in this study was Quasi Experiment, specifically the Nonequivalent Posttest-Only Control Group Design. The findings indicated that the students in class VII of SMP IT Madani Islamic School Payakumbuh who utilized PBL-based flipbooks had superior mathematics problem-solving skills compared to their peers who relied on conventional teaching materials.Keywords– Mathematical Problem Solving Ability, Flipbook, Problem Based Learning, Conventional, Teaching Materials

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether student learning outcomes using the Student Teams Achievement Division type cooperative learning model are better than students using conventional learning in class VIII SMPN 3 Pariaman. This type of research is a quasi-experimental research with a static group design. The results of data analysis with = 0.05 obtained P-Value = 0.00 which means rejecting H0. Abstract

Mathematical Representation ability is one of the abilities needed in learning mathematics. However, in fact, this ability category of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP 10th-grade students was still low. The effort that was argued to overcome this problem is by applying the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. The research objective was to describe the improvement of students’ mathematical representation ability during being taught using the RME approach. The method used is quantitative descriptive. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. The instrument of this research is quizzed consisting of essay questions.
