Abstract

This study examines the complexity of implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in public primary schools in Igembe Central Sub-district, Kenya, a crucial education reform aimed at shaping 21st-century skills. Although CBC implementation efforts have been made, challenges such as inadequate syllabus coverage, ineffective teaching methods, and suboptimal learner learning outcomes remain a serious concern. This study aims to investigate the influence of teacher training on the implementation of CBC in these schools. Adopting a mixed methods approach with a concurrent triangulation research design, the study collected data from 394 participants through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analysis. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (SPSS Version 25), while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The study's results revealed that the implementation of CBC remains a primary concern in the Igembe Central Sub-district public elementary school. A significant proportion of teachers do not complete the syllabus, resulting in substandard student learning outcomes in critical areas. This is mainly due to the lack of adequate teacher training related to curriculum-based assessments. The findings of this study imply the importance for the Ministry of Education (MoE) to sustainably pursue teacher training and retraining programs to address identified competency gaps, in order to enhance the effectiveness of CBC implementation.

Abstract

The development of social media in the digital era has had a significant impact on individual consumption patterns, including among college students. Social media is not only a means of communication and entertainment, but also a strategic space for digital marketing practices that can shape consumer behavior on a massive scale. This study aims to analyze how social media shapes student consumer behavior in higher education, particularly in the context of campus life. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis is carried out in stages through data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions based on an interactive model. The results show that student consumer behavior is formed through four main factors: structured and systemic influencer marketing, massive promotion through various social media platforms, the formation of virtual student communities that encourage collective consumption practices, and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) phenomenon that triggers social anxiety. These findings imply the importance of preventive measures to educate students to be wiser in using social media, as well as developing digital literacy that can curb the rate of excessive consumerism that has the potential to impact psychosocial conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore proactive discipline strategies in preventing indisciplined actions in public secondary schools. Using a qualitative approach and case study design, data were collected through focused group discussions involving students, teachers, and principals from five institutions. Key findings suggest that an effective discipline strategy consists of three key elements: parental involvement, school leadership that serves as a surrogate parent, and the application of positive discipline. Parents' emotional and communicative involvement has been shown to shape students' character and obedient behavior. The principal's participatory leadership, which is physically present in the school environment, creates a sense of security and strengthens student compliance. Meanwhile, a positive discipline approach that focuses on character development through example, dialogue, and active student involvement can increase intrinsic awareness of disciplinary values. This research makes a conceptual contribution to the development of a collaborative, humanistic, and contextual disciplinary management framework. The practical implications of this study include the need for systemic integration of all three strategies in national education policy to create a sustainable culture of discipline in secondary schools.

Abstract

Integrating YouTube videos in teaching and learning has transformed teaching pedagogies by offering educators a powerful tool for enhancing learning experiences. This study focused on using YouTube videos to enhance the teaching and learning of communication skills when executing their mini-Practical Assessment Tasks. In addition, the study intended to have a better grasp of how learners perceive the employment of YouTube videos to support them in improving their communication skills. This study adopted qualitative research as a research approach to gather non-numerical data. Hence, a case study was used in the research design to explore the effectiveness of using YouTube videos to enhance grade 9 Technology learners’ communication skills during the execution of mini-Practical Assessment Tasks. Observations and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data. Inductive analysis was used to analyse the data obtained from the semi-structured interviews while thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data gathered through observations. The researchers identified YouTube videos as effective in enhancing learners’ communication skills. The study also found that some learners were not focusing during the presentation, which could be influenced by the fact that learners in rural areas still prefer the traditional way of teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of teacher role models as an effective strategy in shaping the religious character of students. Departing from the phenomenon of moral degradation among adolescents, character education based on religious values is seen as an urgent need, especially in the madrasah environment. This study employs a descriptive, qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's models. The results of the study show that the example of teachers in daily worship activities, commemoration of Islamic holidays, habituation of good character, and social interaction have a tangible impact on the formation of students' religious character. Teachers who consistently exhibit religious behaviors, such as congregational prayers, reciting the Qur'an, offering greetings, and being fair and empathetic, are able to instill Islamic values through a natural internalization process. The implications of this study suggest that Islamic educational institutions should prioritize exemplary behavior as the primary strategy in designing character-building programs and integrate them into the overall school culture to create a consistent and sustainable religious environment.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology in the 21st century has transformed education into a more flexible, interactive, and sustainable learning ecosystem. This study explores the collaboration between parents and teachers in supporting digital-based learning in madrasahs, the challenges faced, and the strategies to overcome them. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, parents, and school administrators. The findings show that teachers serve as learning designers, facilitators, evaluators, and role models, while parents act as companions, motivators, and supervisors who ensure the responsible use of technology. Challenges include limited parental digital literacy, unequal access to devices and internet, and ineffective communication.Solutions involve digital literacy training, the use of accessible communication platforms, and the development of collaborative programs between schools and parents. The study concludes that the success of digital learning depends not only on technology but also on human collaboration based on trust and shared responsibility, offering both theoretical and practical contributions to educational transformation in the digital era.

Abstract

The rapid digital transformation following the COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped the landscape of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), creating both opportunities and challenges in teaching religious values. This study aims to examine whether digitalization in PAI serves merely as a temporary adaptation or as a sustainable pedagogical strategy for value-based education. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from two Islamic educational institutions: one elementary school and one secondary school. This was achieved through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation of digital learning materials. The findings reveal that teachers’ low digital literacy significantly hinders the effective integration of technology, while digital media use has improved learning flexibility, accessibility, and engagement. Furthermore, digitalization has transformed teaching methods, encouraging more reflective and contextual approaches to Islamic values education. The study presents new empirical evidence on how digital transformation influences pedagogical practices, underscoring the necessity for ongoing teacher training and institutional policy support to foster meaningful and sustainable innovation in religious education.

Abstract

This research aims to examine in depth how transformational leadership is carried out by Islamic boarding school principals in forming a professional work culture in a traditional Islamic education environment. Using a qualitative approach of a case study, this study explores the strategies, dynamics, and impact of leadership on institutional change. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of institutional documents. The results of the study show that the head of the pesantren plays a key role as an agent of change through three main approaches: (1) digitalization-based structure and management, (2) strengthening human resources through the ustaz regeneration system and continuous evaluation, and (3) internalizing the Islamic values of Aswaja into the professional work practices of students and staff. These three aspects encourage the formation of a collaborative, accountable, and quality-oriented work culture. This research confirms that transformational leadership is not only effective in the context of modern management, but also able to adapt to the religious values of Islamic boarding schools. The practical implication of this research is the need to develop a value-based and innovative leadership model in Islamic educational institutions, which emphasizes not only spiritual attainment but also institutional effectiveness professionally.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the implementation of the Digital Literacy Movement through Google Classroom in the school, analyze the challenges faced, and evaluate its impact on students' digital literacy skills. The research subjects included the head librarian, literacy assistant teachers, librarians, and 11th-grade students. The method used was a descriptive qualitative case study. Data collection was conducted through observation, documentation, and interviews, with thematic analysis employing triangulation of sources, techniques, and theories. The study's results indicate that the digital literacy program, implemented through Google Classroom, is effective, with the library serving as both a digital content provider and a learning facilitator. Challenges faced include limited devices, unstable internet connectivity, and student distractions during online learning. Nevertheless, this program successfully increased students' reading interest, critical thinking skills, and collaborative abilities. This research contributes to the development of library-based digital literacy theory and offers a practical model that can be adapted by schools in 3T (frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged) areas. However, this study was limited to a single school context and a short research period, so further research is needed in broader and more diverse contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the revitalization of Furudul ‘Ainiyah learning as a strategy to improve the religious understanding of students in the Az-Zainiyah area of Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton. Furudul ‘Ainiyah includes the fundamental religious obligations that every Muslim must know, such as purification, prayer, fasting, and daily life etiquette, yet traditional monotonous learning methods tend to restrict students’ understanding to theoretical aspects. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and documentation, with data analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, this study found that the revitalization of Furudul ‘Ainiyah learning had a positive impact on students’ religious understanding. Students not only better understood the basic concepts of worship but also practiced them consistently in their daily lives. Moreover, the learning process became more active, interactive, and meaningful, thereby strengthening students’ religious identity within the pesantren environment. The findings indicate that the revitalization of Furudul ‘Ainiyah learning can serve as an effective model for developing pesantren education in improving the quality of students’ religious understanding.
