Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui pengaruh motivasi belajar dan penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca bahasa Inggris SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. (2) untuk mengetahui pengaruh motivasi belajar terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca bahasa Inggris SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang, (3) untuk mengetahui pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca Bahasa Inggris SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survei pada SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang Tahun 2017/2018. Sampel terdiri dari 90 orang siswa yang dipilih secara random dari beberapa sekolah SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. Pengambilan  data dilaksanakan dengan cara menyebarkan kuisioner. Analisis data dengan metode statistik deskriptif, uji validitas, uji realibitas, dan analisa regresi ganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan motivasi belajar dan penguasaan kosakata secara bersama-sama terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca Bahasa Inggris siswa SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig. 0,000 < 0,05 dan Fh = 33,912. (2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan motivasi belajar terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca Bahasa Inggris siswa SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig. 0,039 < 0,05 dan th = 2,099. (3) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata terhadap kemampuan pemahaman membaca Bahasa Inggris siswa SMK Swasta di Kota Tangerang. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig. 0,000 < 0,05 dan th = 6,881.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out The Use of Compound Words and Grammatical Cohesion in the Online News Headline Column of The Jakarta Post. The method used to analyze the headlines is descriptive qualitative method in the form of data from the online news headlines column in The Jakarta Post by examining each headline containing compound words and grammatical cohesion. The writer uses the Delahunty and Garvey’s theory to examine compound words and the theory of Halliday and Hasan to examine grammatical cohesion. After the writer analyzes the data in the online news headline column of “The Jakarta Post”, the writer can finally draw the conclusion. The results showed: 1) There are 3 types of compound words occurred in the online news headline column of The Jakarta Post, that is Compound Noun 80%, Compound Adjective 17%, and Compound Verb 3%. 2) There are 3 types of grammatical cohesion that occurred in the online news headlines column of The Jakarta Post, that is Reference 55%, Conjunction 44%, and Substitution 1%.

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to find out the character and moral value in “The Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows” by J.K Rowling. This research is designed as qualitative research. The approach that the writer uses is qualitative approach. The method that is used by the writer is content analysis method. The data are collected by analyzing the data found in the movie. The analysis of the movie is undertaken on the dialogues. The results of the research are the kinds of character and the moral value. 1) The kinds of character according to Russel in “The Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows” is 53% for Protagonist character, 29% for Antagonist character and 18% for Foil character. The highest number is in protagonist and antagonist character because both of characters has a strong role in the movie. 2) The kinds of moral value according to Borba in “The Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows” is 29% for Respect, 21% for Kindness, 16% for Empathy, 13% for Self-control, 11% for Fairness, 5% for Conscience and 5% for Tolerance. Respect aspect gets the highest number because the character who shows the respect in the movie is not only the protagonist but also the foil character.Keywords: : character; moral; value; moral value; film.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson. Based on the theories of character and moral values collected, four main points are analyzed, they are: 1) How is the character appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Russel How is moral values that appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Milhorn. 3) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Russel’s theory, those are the Protagonist, the protagonist played by Kate Keller, Annie Sullivan, Captain Arthur Keller, Mr. Anagnos, and Viney, the Foil, played by Hellen Keller, James Keller, and Aunt Ev, 4) There are six types of moral values that appear in “Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Milhorn’s theory, they are: belief, fairness, kind-hearted honesty, responsibility, and tolerance, belief is the most dominant moral values of all moral values that arise.Keywords: character; moral value; moral value; film.

Abstract

This study deals with phonological analysis, which focuses on analyzing lexical and metrical stress in Maya Angelou's poem entitled 'Still I Rise.' This study explores the lexical stress and metrical stress used in Angelou's poem, which answers the research questions. This method is the qualitative method which means the data was written text. The writer intends to determine what lexical stress (primary and secondary stress) and metrical stress (iamb, trochee, and dactyl) are in the poem text. This research showed that lexical stress, namely primary stress with total numbers, is 43 items, and secondary stress with total numbers is three items. Also, there are metrical stresses, including iamb with nine items, trochee 27 items, and dactyl seven items.

Abstract

This research is an experimental study  of private vocational school in West Jakarta, academic year of 2018-2019. The number of sample is 60 students who taken randomly from several private vocational schools in East Jakarta. The purpose of this research are (1) to find out the effects of learning motivation towards improvement of the students English achievement. (2) To find out the effect of learning motivation towards improvement of the student English achievement. (3) Next, to find out simultaneous effects learning model and learning motivation towards improvement of the student English achievement. Collecting data are carried out by giving questioner , observation and a test. Data analysis used by a two-way anova method. The statistical test used  t test and f test. The results of this research are (1) there is a significant effect of using learning model towards English achievement students of private vocational school in West Jakarta. It is proven by getting sig score = 0.004 < 0.05 and f test = 8.9673). (2) There is a significant effect of learning motivation towards English achievement students of private vocational school in West Jakarta. It is proven by getting sig score = 0.008  < 0.05 and f.test  = 7.563.  ( 3) There are significant effects of learning model and learning motivation towards English achievement students of private vocational school in West Jakarta.  Those are proven by getting sig score = 0.015 < 0.05 and f test = 6.278Key words : Learning model, learning motivation, English achievement

Abstract

The concept of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) has become an important issue in 21st-century learning. One of the skills reflecting higher-order thinking skills is critical thinking that also becomes another important concept that has recently been studied in some researches. The number of previous studies supporting the influence of debate as a beneficial pedagogy on the development of critical thinking skills have been conducted through some researches. However, the studies contradicting the issue also need to be concerned to consider the influence of debate particularly in enhancing critical thinking in English language class. Having conducted a study by using a quantitative method and objective assessment, the purpose of the present study was to find significant effect of debate on the development of students’ higher-order thinking skills in English language class. The study was conducted in public senior high school 1 in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, involving 68 students divided into two groups. The result shows that there was no significant mean difference of the scores obtained, despite the higher scores achieved by the experimental group in which the group using debate, since the th is lower than the tt(1.21 < 1.669). In other words, the study reveals that debate does not have significant effect on the development of higher-order thinking skills. Some possible reasons are then discussed and illustrated.

Abstract

This study aims to show the influence of Learning Methods and Emotional Intelligence on the Ability to Write Students' English Narrative Texts. The research hypotheses tested include: 1).Effect of Learning Methods on the Ability to Write English Narrative Texts. 2).The Effect of Emotional Intelligence on the Ability to Write English Narrative Texts.3).The interaction effect of Learning Methods and Emotional Intelligence on the Ability to Write English Narrative Texts. This study uses an experimental method. Research results:1).There is a significant influence of learning methods on students' ability to write English narrative texts at students.This is evidenced by the summary of sig values 0.016<0.05,with Fcount=6.062. 2).Theren is a significant influence of emotional intelligence on students' ability to write English narrative texts at students. This is evidenced by the summary value of sig 0,000<0.05,with Fcount=15.638. 3).There is a significant interactive effect of learning methods and emotional intelligence on students' ability to write narrative English texts at students. Abstract

The less ability to speak English of someone and the importance of mastering English, then it is necessary to develop effective and efficient in English learning so that mastery of English becomes better. Vocabulary mastery plays an important role because with a good vocabulary mastery, communication activities with others will be well established, In addition, the process of teaching and learning English is a reciprocal process between teacher and student to jointly seek the achievement of instructional goals. The process of teaching and learning English, especially students' speaking skills, not only results in increased student knowledge but also attitudes toward English that are more positive, and the way they learn changes more effectively and efficiently. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn about what concerns parents and learning motivation towards students' English language skills. If there is a positive and significant influence then make strong parents 'attention and learning motivation towards students' English skills. The research method used was a survey with a transition and regression analysis, which is connecting data that shows parents 'attention and learning motivation with data that shows students' English speaking skills. Data about the variables of parents' attention and learning motivation were obtained through a questionnaire compiled by researchers, which measures matters related to the above. While data on English speaking skills were obtained through direct tests conducted by researchers on respondents. 1) There is a significant difference with parents' attention and motivation to learn together on English speaking skills, private vocational students in Subang Regency. This is evidenced by the value of sig = 0,000 <0.05 and Fcount= 38.758. 2) There is a significant difference between parents of English speaking skills, private vocational students in Subang Regency. This is evidenced by the value of sig = 0,000 <0.05 and tcount = 5.629. 3) There are significant differences in the learning of English, students of Private Vocational Schools in Subang Regency.
