Abstract

Abstract: Learning writing skills used the eleventh-grade students of SMK Tunas Harapan, Jelambar, Petamburan. In conducting this research, it is qualitative research using a survey method. Data were collected by population and sample observation, interview, a document study, data of the students. The research of evaluation of the active and passive sentences, the result of the students’ error are: the total error in using active sentences are 171 errors that consist of 34 errors or 19,88% error of misinformation, 92 errors or 53,88% error of omission, 43 errors or 25,14% error of addition, two errors or 1,66% error of misordering. The result of the students’ error are: the total error in using Passive sentences are 17 errors that consist of 5 errors or 29, 41% error of misinformation, six errors or 35,29% error of omission, six errors or 35,29% error of addition, 0 errors or 0% error of misordering, the process of teaching and learning Writing using Recount Text of the Active and Passive Sentences are effective and able to implement as an alternative way in teaching and learning processKeywords: active and passive sentences, students’ writing, recount text.

Abstract

This research is a kind of survey and aims to find out the effects of reading habit and self-discipline towards student’s descriptive text writing skill. The observed population of this research is students from state junior high schools in East Jakarta. The sample was gained through simple random sampling, which means that the researcher mixed the subjects in the population so that they will be considerably the same. The gained data was then analyzed by using correlation technique and multiple regressions. Previously, the prerequisite test before examining the regression test must be accomplished. The results of this research are: 1) There are significant effects of reading habit and self-discipline altogether towards descriptive text writing skill. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and Fobserved = 45.365; 2) There is a significant effect of reading habit towards student’s descriptive text writing skill. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and tobserved = 7.034; 3) There is a significant effect of self-discipline towards student’s descriptive text writing skill. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and tobserved = 3.788.

Abstract

The purpose on this research is to know whether there are significant effects of reading habit and vocabulary mastery towards descriptive writing skill. The research was conducted at SMP Tahta Syajar, SMP At-taqwa 06 and SMP Seroja Bekasi of the eighth grade with the total population of 534 students and the sample was 75 students that were randomly taken. The method used in the research was a survey. Data of reading habit, vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing skill were collected from a test. The data analysis used correlation and multiple regression which showed the data requirements test (normality test and linearity test), before the regression test was carried out.Data collection done by giving essay test for descriptive writing skill, thirty (30) items of multiplechoice test for Reading Habit, and twenty (30) items of multiplechoice test for vocabulary mastery given to the subjects at SMP Tahta Syajar, SMP At-taqwa 06 and SMP Seroja Bekasi. The result of data analyzes shows that: 1) There is significant effect of reading habit and vocabulary mastery jointly towards descriptive writing skill. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the value Sig = 0.000 <0.05 and Fcount = 62.376. 2) There is significant effect of reading habit towards descriptive writing skill. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the value Sig = 0.000 < 0.05 and tcount = 9.298. 3) There is significant effect of reading habit towards descriptive writing skill. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the value Sig = 0.001 < 0.05 and tcount = 3.330.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze: 1) Moral values in a children’s picture book "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters" by Barack Obama. 2) Ethics in a children’s picture book "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters" by Barack Obama. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative which aims to describe moral values and ethics in the children picture book Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters. The result of the analysis: 1) In moral values, self-confidence get the highest percentage of 45.65 %, bravery 19.56 %, strong belief 15.22 %, peace loving 10.87%, love and affection 8.69%. 2) While ethics, justice and beneficence get the highest percentage of 25 %, rights 22.5 %, utilitarianism 10%, and respect for autonomy 17.5%.Keywords: moral values, ethics, children, picture book.

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the representation of a dystopian society and its structure in the novel The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. The aims of this study are (1) to describe a dystopian society that has to adapt to living underground city in the novel The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and (2) to describe the social structure of a dystopian society in the novel The City of Ember. The Structuralism approach is used as the theory approach by focusing on three aspects from Tzvetan Todorov: syntactic aspect, semantic aspect, and verbal aspect. The first data is taken from the novel The City of Ember and the second sources are taken from other supporting books, journals, and articles.

Abstract

The Objective of this research was to analyze, know and describe the use of simple present verb on descriptive text and the use of adjective on descriptive text made by students of Public Junior High School in Bekasi. The number of population is 612. As the sample the researcher took 60 students from the population. The method used in this study was content analysis method to describe students’ errors consisting 418 erroneous sentences and analyze the data taken from written test. The finding shows that errors are 1). 56,93% or 238 errors occurred in the simple present verb and 2). 43,06% or 180 errors occurred in Adjective. It happened because the students did not really understand and they were not able to use simple present verb and adjective correctly in the sentence.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine: (1) The type of code-switching and code-mixing used, (2) The function of code-switching and code-mixing used by teachers and students, (3) The reason teachers and students use code-switching and code-mixing. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection in this study was carried out by observation, questionnaire, and interview and then analyzed and describing the results. The results show: (1) The types of code-switching and code-mixing often used are the type of intrasentential code-switching is 50.7%. Furthermore, the type of code-mixing alternation is 46.2%. (2) The code-switching and code-mixing functions used by teachers and students are as easy communication as is 42.5%. (3) Teachers and students use code-switching and code-mixing to facilitate communication in class and understand the material presented by the teacher.Keywords: Code Switching, Code Mixing, EFL Class.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know how the using of journal dialogue and genre-based approach in writing hortatory text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Beber and SMA Negeri 1 Jalaksana. This research was a content analysis study that consisted of three meetings. In doing the research, the writer involved 61 students of Class XI Social 3 and 4, one English teacher as the collaborator and the writer herself. In this research, there were two kinds of data. The first data were qualitative. To obtain the qualitative data, the writer conducted observation, interviews, and evaluating students’ writing tasks. The qualitative data were in the form of field notes, observation checklists result, interview transcripts, and students’ writing. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were presented in the score of the students’ writing task from students’ worksheet 2 in the third meeting. The result of this study shows two things. 1) The using of journal dialogue can improve students’ writing skills. Students’ writing problems can be reduced by applying journal dialogue. The feedback given by the writer facilitates the students to find and to correct their errors in the writing aspects, namely content, organisation, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. In reference to the students’ writing scores, the students’ ability in those five aspects of writing improved after the journal dialogue strategy was given. It can be seen that the students’ mean value gain from the students’ worksheet 2 for class XI social 3 and 4 in the content aspect is 3.52; the organisation aspect is 3.87; then the vocabulary aspect is 3.57; then the grammar aspect is 2.9; and the mechanics aspect is 2.9. 2) The using of genre-based approach can be an efective method in improving student’s writing skill explicitly through the stages of BkoF, MoT, JcoT, and IcoT, and it created students have opportunities and time in writing, grow motivation to write English. So, it prepared students with targeted learning where they develop meaningful and communicative language skills through text, especially when the students write a hortatory text..Keyword: Journal Dialogue, Genre-Based Approach, Writing, Hortatory Exposition

Abstract

Abstract: The paper aims to analyze the problem as follows: 1) how the characters in the film and 2) how the moral values contained in Roland Emmerich’s film The Patriot. The research method used is qualitative, with primary data sources taken from the film and secondary literature outside of the film. The data collection technique used is the documentation of Creswell. Documentation is a method used in scientific research to collect data using documents or lists of evidence and data analysis techniques used based on the Moleong theory. The character theory used is Russell’s theory, while for moral values in the film, the writer uses Setyosih’s theory. The results showed that; as; 1) the characters are divided into three, namely dominating characters are the protagonist (48%), antagonist (28%), and foil (24%). 2) moral values are divided into 6, namely; tolerance (13%), fairness (9.09%), trust (18.18%), kindness (32.81%), honesty (4.54%), and responsibility (22.72%). Abstract

This research aims at showing morphological and syntactical errors in English Department students’ essays. Besides, this research also focuses on seeking factors affecting the errors, which include interlanguage error and intralanguage error. The data of this research were 30 English essays written by English Department students in Jakarta. The data was analyzed using error analysis to describe syntactical and morphological errors found in students’ essays and the factors affecting the errors. The results show that the most dominant errors were inflectional errors (120 or 66%) in morphological level and tenses errors (52 or 41%) at the syntactical level. The analysis also revealed that there were 93 or 79% intralanguage errors in morphological level and 102 or 81% intralanguage errors in the syntactical level. These findings imply that the teacher of English as a foreign language (EFL) should be aware of errors made by the students and the cause of errors in writing.Keywords: writing; EFL; morphology; syntax; error analysis.
