Abstract

The objectives of the research are to know the prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses in “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens. The total sample data of this research are sixty each for two variables. The technique of collecting data of prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses is determining texts in the novel, collecting the selected sentences, and storing them in a table. The research methodology applied is qualitative, and the technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis and hierarchical structures of syntax. Three categories are used to analyze prepositional phrases: post-modifier of a noun (pN), post-modifier of an adjective (pAdj) and adverbial (pA) while to analyze the subordinate clauses, complement clauses (CC), adjunct or adverbial clauses (AC), and relative clauses (RC) are employed. The results of the research are: 1) Prepositional phrases that function as adverbial (pA) are found to be the most category used with 65%, and the preposition of is the most used among others with twelve times in total. 2) Subordinate clauses that function as adjunct clauses (AC) are found to be the most category used with 62%, and the subordinate conjunction when is the most used among others with eleven times in total.

Abstract

This research aims to find and analyze: (1) the effect of students' perceptions on the professional abilities of teachers and interest in learning together on the achievement of learning English Private Vocational School Students in North Jakarta. (2) The effect of students' perceptions on the professional abilities of teachers on English language learning achievement of Private Vocational High School students in North Jakarta. (3) The influence of students' interest in learning on the achievement of English learning of private vocational students in North Jakarta. The research method is survey with data analysis using multiple linear regression. Samples were taken as many as 70 students with simple random techniques. The results of the study are as follows: (1) There is a significant influence of students' perceptions of the teacher's professional abilities and interest in learning together on the learning achievement of English private vocational students in North Jakarta. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig 0,000 <0.05 and Fcount = 49.399. (2) There is a significant influence of students' perceptions of the professional abilities of teachers on the achievement of English learning of private vocational students in North Jakarta. This is evidenced by the acquisition of sig.0,000 <0.05 and Tcount = 6,381. (3) There is a significant influence of students' interest in learning towards the achievement of English learning of private vocational students in North Jakarta. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig. 0.011 <0.05 and Tcount = 2.605. The results of this research are useful to improve the quality of learning and improve English learning achievement at vocational schools.Key Words: student perception; teacher competencies; learning interest; learning achievement

Abstract

This research goal was to determine the validity and reliability of the Maritime English proficiency test conducted by PUKP 02 in Banten Merchant Marine Polytechnic. The questions were given in the form of multiple choices. This research is categorized as descriptive analysis because it is intended to describe the level of difficulty, distraction power, validity, and reliability of the Maritime English test for third-grade students in the Maritime vocational school in the 2019/2020 academic year by analyzing the validity and reliability of each item. This study concludes: 1) The Validity for the nautical studies there were 43 item items or 71.66% of the total were valid. In the Engineering studies, there are 41 items or 68.33% of the total were valid. 2) The nautical reliability was found to be 0.5968, while for the technical department of 0.6789, the figures were at intervals of 0.40 to 0.70 with moderate interpretation. Thus, it can be concluded that the Maritime English proficiency test has sufficient validity and reliability.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out: 1). The effects of vocabulary mastering and sentence structure towards English exposition writing skills. 2). The effects of vocabulary mastering towards English exposition writing skills. 3). The effects of sentence structures on English exposition writing skills. The research method used is a survey with double linear regression analysis—the study sample has as many as 93 students, which are taken using a proportional and simple random sampling technique. The statistics test is using the F test. The result showed that: 1). There are significant effects of vocabulary mastering and sentence structure towards English exposition writing skills at State Vocational Schools in Tangerang. That is proved by Sig = 0.000 <0.05 and F observe = 38.543. 2). The effects of vocabulary mastering towards English exposition writing skills, presented by Sig = 0.000 < 0.05 and t observe = 3.779. 3). There are significant effects of sentence structures on English exposition writing skills at State Vocational Schools in Tangerang. It is proven by Sig = 0.000 < 0.05 and t observe = 4.331.Keywords: vocabulary mastering, sentence structure, English exposition writing skills.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh kemampuan membaca cepat dan sikap terhadap kemampuan menulis eksposisi bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini  menggunakan metode survei, dengan populasi siswa SMK Swasta di Kabupaten Indramayu, melalui teknik acak proporsional diperoleh sampel sebanyak 68 siswa. Teknik analisis regresi digunakan untuk analisis data dengan menggunakan program aplikasi SPSS. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa kemampuan membaca cepat dan sikap berbahasa berkontribusi terhadap kemampuan menulis eksposisi bahasa Inggris. Kata kunci: menulis eksposisi bahasa Inggris, membaca cepat, sikap berbahasa

Abstract

Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata dan struktur kalimat secara bersama-sama terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. 2) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. 3) Pengaruh struktur kalimat terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah survei. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur dengan besar sampel sebanyak 90 siswa yang diambil secara acak dari siswa SMP Widya Manggala Jakarta Timur dan siswa SMP Kuntum Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta Timur. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan September-November 2019. Instrumennya yaitu tes dan angket. Analisis dilakukan dengan metode regresi linear ganda. Hasil pengujian hipotesis diperoleh kesimpulan sebagai berikut: 1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata dan struktur kalimat secara bersama-sama terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,003 < 0,05 dan F hitung = 6,382. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig= 0,002 < 0, 05 dan t hitung = 2,198. 3) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan struktur kalimat terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,003 < 0, 05, dan oleh t hitung = 3,108.Kata Kunci: penguasaan kosakata, struktur kalimat, pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out and analyze the effects of grammar mastery and reading interest towards writing desctiptive text ability. The population that is observed in this research is students of class VIII (Eight) SMP Negeri East Jakarta. The sample is 72 respondents from 3 schools. The sample is obtained through a simple random sample, that is the researcher combined respondents in the population so that they would be measured in the same amount. This study has 3 variables which are divided into 2 independent variables (variable grammar mastery and reading interest variable) and 1 dependent variable (descriptive writing ability variable). Data collection is done through multiple choice tests, questionnaires and written tests for all variables. Data acquisition is then analyzed using multiple correlation and regression techniques. Before performing a regression test, the test of analysis requirements must be achieved first, such as normality test and linearity test. The results of this study are 1) There is a significant effect of gramma mastery and reading interest together toward writing desctiptive text ability of SMP Negeri students East Jakata.. This is evidenced by the sig score. 0.003 <0.05 and F_ count = 6.416; 2) There is an insignificant effect of grammar mastery towards writing desctiptive text ability of SMP Negeri students East Jakarta.. This is evidenced by the sig score. 0.729> 0.05 and tcount = -.347 .; 3) There is a significant effect of reading interest towards writing desctiptive text ability of SMP Negeri students East Jakarta.. This is evidenced by sig score 0.001 <0.05 and tcount = 3,578. This shows that writing desctiptive text ability is highly mastered or effected  by the mastery of grammar and reading interest what they have.Keywords:  Grammar Mastery, Reading Interest, writing desctiptive text ability

Abstract

This is a descriptive qualitative research that uses a psychological approach. The data source of this research is the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, publisher of Scholastic Press, New York (original version) in 2007, Mizan Fantasi (Indonesian version) in 2012. The research data are in the form of words, phrases and sentences that related with the main character's motives and the character education values in the novel. Data obtained by reading and note taking techniques. This objective of this study to analyze the existence of the main character's action motives and the value of character education in the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. The results of the analysis obtained the following conclusions: 1. Hugo's motives as the main character there are 20 quotes, namely as follows: a) motives for physical needs there are 3 quotations, b) motives for security and safety needs are 4 quotations, c) motives for trust and compassion consist from 5 quotations, d) the motive for self-esteem needs there are 3 quotations, e). The motives for self-actualization needs are 6 quotations. The prominent action motive is the motive for self-actualization needs. 2. The value of character education contained in Brian's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, consisting of; a) religious 2 quotes, b) honest 4 quotes, c) discipline 3 quotes, d) hard work 7 quotes, e) creative 2 quotes, f) independent 1 quote, g) curiosity 4 quotes, h) appreciate achievement 2 quotes, i) friends 3 quotes, j) peace love 1 quote, k) likes to read 2 quotes, l) social care 4 quotes, m) responsibility 2 quotes.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effects of grammar mastery and reading habits on students’ writing skills in recount text at State Junior High School in Tangerang Regency. The population is students from state junior high schools. The 60 samples were gained through a cluster. The data was analyzed by using the multiple regression method. The results are: 1) There are any significant effects of grammar mastery and reading habits jointly towards students’ writing skills in recount text. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and Fobserved = 20.653; 2) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery towards students’ writing skills in recount text. It is proved by Sig.= 0.001 < 0.05 and tobserved = 3.435; 3) There is a significant effect of reading habit on students’ writing skills in recount text. It is proved by Sig.= 0.000 < 0.05 and tobserved = 4.639.
