Abstract

Religion is one of the important aspects of human life that can affect a person, be it the way they think, act, and interact with the surrounding world. Religious education begins with the education obtained in a family. Therefore, this research aims to see how a family, which is the smallest unit in society, provides religious education for children. One of the novelties of this research is that the author explores the research findings more broadly and deeply, and gives emphasis to the socialisation process in the family. This research employed the literature study research method. This method was chosen. It can answer the questions posed more comprehensively because it refers to several scientific quantities that have been published previously. The theory used to analyse the findings is Functional Structural Theory. This theory was chosen because it is relevant to explain how a structure carries out its functions and roles, to be able to achieve a goal. The results showed that a family has a big responsibility in instilling religious values in a child. This responsibility is carried out in the form of socialisation and interaction between family members. How the family transforms religious values for each child is one of the fundamental things that will affect a child's religious understanding. The family, as the smallest structure in society, has a great function and role in shaping a child's character, including the cultivation of religious values.

The aim of this research is basically to find out what the forms of charismatic religious leadership of Sheikh Maulana Ibrahim Al-Khalidi Kumpulan are, and to find out Max Weber’s views on the charismatic religious leadership of Sheikh Maulana Ibrahim Al-Khalidi Kumpulan. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was carried out by interviews, observation and documentation. The research location is Jorong Koto Tuo Nagari Koto Kaciak. The informants in this research were six people consisting of descendants of Sheikh Maulana Ibrahim Al Khalidi Kumpulan, cemetery managers, and youth leaders. The research results show that charismatic religious leadership is characterized by how a leader's charisma influences his followers. Abstract

This research was motivated by the existence of problems faced by teenagers in the Padang Sari village environment. In this rampant deviant behaviour, the existence of the Mahabbatru Rosul dhikr and prayer science council became a forum for conditioning and a medium for instilling moral values for teenagers. This study aims to determine the role and inhibiting factors of the Mahabbatur Rosul dhikr and sholawat assembly in forming the religious morals of adolescents. This research is descriptive qualitative research with a field research design and uses an ethnographic approach. The data in the study were obtained through interviews, documentation, and direct observation in the field. The location of this research is the house of Mahabbatur Rosul's Dhikr and Prayer Science Council. This research is analysed using Erving Goffman's dramaturgical approach. The results of the research show that active participation in Mahabbatur Rosul's dhikr and prayer science assembly plays a role in the formation of adolescent religious morals through the activities carried out, namely: (1) learning to read the al-Qur’an and recitation, (2) learning Safinah fiqh, and (3) the Friday night routine. Through these activities, teenagers' religious morals will be formed, making them more careful in their actions. This research concludes that Mahabbatur Rosul's collection of dhikr and prayer plays a role in the formation of adolescent religious morals through all the activities carried out. The religious morals that are formed by the Messenger are honesty, responsibility, and discipline.

Abstract

The study examines the role of Teungku—local religious leaders in maintaining social order in Gampong Krueng Tuynong, Aceh Jaya. Drawing on Max Weber’s theory of authority, the study analyzes how the three types of authority—traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational—interact and function synergistically within informal religious leadership. Using a qualitative narrative method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that Teungku gains legitimacy through lineage, moral charisma, and involvement in village governance structures. Their leadership, rooted in cultural heritage and ethical example, positions them as mediators, educators, and guardians of social harmony. Empirically, this study demonstrates that the stability of post-conflict village social structures can remain stable through informal leadership that is not formally institutionalized, yet holds socially recognized authority. Theoretically, it offers a new synthesis of Weber’s typology by showing that, in local contexts such as Aceh, the three forms of authority do not operate in isolation but instead converge functionally within the figure of the Teungku. Thus, this article contributes to a broader understanding of how informal religious authority can serve as a stabilizing force in communities shaped by layered values, traditions, and local norms.

Abstract

Water plays a crucial role in societies and the universe as a whole. It creates and sustains life and, in the process, legitimizes social hierarchies. Water is used in several physical and non-physical ways, including in religious practices. However, there appear to be insufficient studies that try to ascertain the link between Water and religion. This study examined perceptions of the association between water and religion. It assessed water as a sacred resource in line with theological aspects, as being required in remembering God through spiritual rituals and practices, for He allows humanity and nature to flourish. The study also addressed the importance of conserving this resource. An interpretive and theological framework from the Christian perspective was used to understand this nexus. Further thematic analysis led to the identification of three main themes. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 21 participants from the Christian faith. The results revealed that water is a sacred resource that is highly used in religion. It brings healing, sanctification, and consecration among users. Water also plays a pivotal role in baptism and spiritual rituals, and is also very helpful in improving the health of individuals. Water conservation, including rainwater harvesting, recycling, and the avoidance of water pollution, was recommended.

Abstract

This study examines Ratib Samman as a local Islamic ritual practiced in Jorong Salimpariak, West Sumatra, and analyzes its significance from the perspective of the sociology of religion. Using a qualitative approach that combines participant observation, in-depth interviews, and textual analysis of ritual recitations (radai), this research explores how Ratib Samman functions as a form of lived Islam embedded in local social life. The findings show that Ratib Samman is not merely a devotional practice but a multifaceted ritual that reinforces social solidarity, transmits moral and religious values, and shapes embodied religious dispositions. The use of religious poetry and synchronized bodily movements enables participants to internalize theological teachings while fostering collective identity and moral discipline. Furthermore, the ritual plays an important role in providing meaning and emotional support for individuals and families, illustrating how religious practices respond to social and existential concerns. This study contributes to the sociology of religion by demonstrating that local Islamic rituals should be understood as active social processes rather than passive outcomes of cultural acculturation. By foregrounding ritual practice, embodiment, and symbolic meaning, the study offers insight into how religion continues to shape moral life and social cohesion in contemporary Muslim communities.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need to understand the level of religious understanding among foster children in carrying out social and spiritual guidance activities, as reflected in their behavior and their ability to comprehend and apply what they learn. Education is not only acquired through formal institutions but also through informal settings, such as activities conducted in orphanages, which serve as compulsory supplementary educational programs for foster children. This study aims to analyze the religious understanding developed through social and spiritual guidance activities at the Aisyiyah Matur Branch Orphanage. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The informants consist of foster children, caregivers, and administrators within the orphanage environment. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The theoretical framework used in this study is Talcott Parsons’ structural functionalism theory, particularly the AGIL (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency) scheme. The findings indicate that the level of religious understanding among foster children varies. Some foster children demonstrate a low level of religious understanding in participating in social and spiritual guidance activities, as evidenced by behaviors such as joking with peers, sleeping during activities, or not participating at all. These conditions are influenced by factors such as busy schedules, boredom, and less engaging learning methods. However, other foster children are able to internalize and apply the religious values they learn, enabling them to demonstrate positive behavior and compete with children outside the orphanage environment.

Abstract

This research explores the Marpege-pege tradition in traditional Angkola Batak weddings as a social mechanism that addresses the high costs of marriage, especially the bridewealth obligation (tuhor). Conducted in Sialogo Village, West Angkola District, South Tapanuli Regency, the study focuses on (1) how the Marpege-pege tradition is practiced and (2) its role in the community. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and Robert K. Merton’s structural functionalism framework, data were gathered through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation with community members. Results reveal that Marpege-pege is a coordinated collective effort of monetary contributions organized by the groom’s family, involving stages: Manyapai Boru, Marpege-pege, and Pataru Tuhor. From a functionalist view, this tradition has an obvious role in easing wedding expenses. Additionally, it fosters latent functions like enhanced social solidarity, stronger community bonds, and the preservation of cultural values across generations. These latent functions bolster social capital by supporting reciprocal relationships and collective responsibility within the community. The study concludes that Marpege-pege is more than just an economic tactic; it is a culturally embedded tradition that sustains social cohesion and cultural continuity in Angkola Batak society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the religious behavior of the An-Nadzir community in Romang Lompoa Village, Bontomarannu District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. The focus of the research is directed at the dimensions of religious behavior, influencing factors, and its social implications in the context of the local community. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of five key informants consisting of religious figures, community leaders, and ordinary members. Data analysis was conducted using thematic methods, complemented by source and method triangulation techniques to maintain validity. The results show that the religious behavior of the An-Nadzir community includes a cognitive dimension in the form of belief in the importance of upholding Allah's law and the sunnah of the Prophet; an emotional dimension that brings peace and spiritual experience to members; and a behavioral dimension in the form of the Latiful Akbar dhikr ritual, distinctive prayer procedures, and outward symbols such as turbans, veils, and blond hair. The community structure is organized through hierarchical leadership centered on an amir. Interactions with the outside community are relatively harmonious through mutual cooperation and economic engagement, although the community often faces stigma and criticism. The study's conclusions confirm that the An-Nadzir community is able to survive as a minority religious group through internal solidarity, social openness, and resilience in maintaining its religious identity. These findings contribute to the literature on minority religiosity in Indonesia and offer practical implications for strengthening pluralism and social tolerance.

Abstract

This study explores the Mauludhu tradition in Bau-Bau as a means of integrating Islamic principles with local culture, showing resilience amid global disruptions. Mauludhu, celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) birth, is both a religious rite and a cultural event that bonds the community. In Bau-Bau, it emphasizes local uniqueness through traditional foods, cultural processions, and cross-generational participation. Amid challenges like climate change, digital shifts, and social fragmentation, Mauludhu adapts by preserving its spiritual core while responding to modern changes. The research uses a qualitative method, including literature review and documentation, to analyze symbolic meanings, implementation dynamics, and social functions. Results indicate that the tradition helps preserve Islamic values, strengthen social ties, and educate younger generations culturally. The incorporation of digital media and youth involvement shows how the tradition evolves to stay relevant. Overall, Bau-Bau’s Mauludhu demonstrates that religion and local culture are adaptable and dynamic forces capable of maintaining their identities amid globalization. It stands as a pillar of cultural resilience and religious devotion in a rapidly changing world.
