Abstract

Coal stacked in stockpiles is directly exposed to sunlight and rain, which can significantly affect coal quality. These enviromental conditions influence the temperature of coal piles, subsequently causing fluctuations in moisture content. This stucdy investigates the effect of coal temperature on coal quality parameters at the ROM Coal Stockpile area of PT. Mahakam Sumber Jaya. Using actual field sampling methods with 30 samples collected form the ROM C HTS (High Total Sulphur) area during November – Desember 2024, coal temperature was measured using a thermogun and quality parameters total moisture, ash content and calorific value were analyzed using ASTM standard. Simple linear regression and correlation analysis were applied for data processing. Result showed that coal temperature has very stong negative correlation with total moisture (r = -0,89), a strong positive correlation with ash content (r = 0,59). The correlation between total moisture and calorific value was strong (r= -0,66). Temperature grouping into three ranges (30-50°C, 50-70°C, and 70-95°C) showed consistent trends: total moisture decreased by 2%, ash content increased by 1%, and calorific value increased by 66 kcal/kg as tempreture rose. These findings suggest that optimal coal tempreture maangement is essential to maintining coal quality during storage .

Abstract

This study examines the decline in the performance of the Fresh Water Generator (FWG), an auxiliary system used to produce fresh water for operational activities and crew consumption aboard MV Sky Free. The FWG experienced a reduction in production capacity from the normal output of 10–12 tons/day to only 6–8 tons/day, creating the potential for freshwater shortages during vessel operations. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach, with data collected through direct observation, documentation, and questionnaires distributed to relevant personnel. Data were analyzed using the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method to determine the priority of failures based on their Risk Priority Number (RPN). The analysis revealed that scale accumulation on the evaporator plates represented the most critical failure mode, with an RPN of 216, followed by localized overheating of the heating pipe (192), leakage in the vacuum system (135), and condenser fouling combined with non-condensable gas accumulation (120). These failures reduce heat transfer efficiency, disrupt evaporation and condensation processes, and ultimately lower freshwater production. Corrective measures include cleaning the evaporator and condenser, repairing vacuum system leaks, and conducting comprehensive component inspections. Preventive actions involve implementing scheduled maintenance, monitoring operational parameters, and performing regular inspections. Consistent application of preventive and corrective maintenance successfully restores FWG performance, enabling freshwater production to return to its normal capacity of 10–12 tons/day and ensuring a sustainable freshwater supply for ship operations.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the causes of sea water cooling pump failure, analyze its impact on the main engine cooling system, and explain the corrective actions taken to restore pump performance on board MV. Manalagi Wanda. The sea water cooling pump is one of the essential auxiliary machines responsible for circulating seawater as a cooling medium to maintain the main engine operating temperature within a safe range during ship operations. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through direct observation, interviews with the Chief Engineer, Fourth Engineer, and Foreman, as well as documentation during the sea practice period. The collected data were analyzed to determine the relationship between pump component failures and the decline in the performance of the main engine cooling system. The findings revealed that the pump pressure decreased from 2.4 bar to 1.4 bar, causing the main engine High Temperature (HT) to rise from 80.5°C to 82.5°C. Inspection and dismantling of the pump identified damage to the mechanical seal, bearing, and shaft. These damaged components resulted in leakage, excessive vibration, unstable pump rotation, and reduced seawater flow rate. Corrective maintenance was carried out by replacing the damaged components with new parts according to the manufacturer's specifications. After reassembly and a successful test run, the pump pressure returned to 2.4 bar, while the HT temperature decreased to approximately 80.0°C, allowing the cooling system to operate normally and efficiently once again.

Abstract

Sea water cooling pump is a vital component of the main engine cooling system, responsible for circulating seawater to absorb engine heat. Damage to Sea water cooling pump No. 2 on MV. Sjw Mountain reduced pump pressure from the normal range of 3.5–3.9 bar to 1.5–1.9 bar, causing the cooling system temperature to increase to 80°C and increasing the risk of engine overheating. This study aimed to identify the causes of pump failure, evaluate the level of failure risk, and determine appropriate corrective actions. The research employed the Fishbone diagram and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Data were collected through observations, interviews with ship engineers, documentation, and questionnaires administered to the Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, Third Engineer , Fourth Engineer, and Oiler. The Fishbone analysis identified five contributing factors: man, method, machine, material, and environment. FMEA results showed that the method factor had the highest Risk Priority Number (RPN) of 210, followed by environment (175), machine (160), material (120), and man (100). The study concluded that inadequate inspection and maintenance practices were the primary causes of pump failure. Recommended improvements include strengthening the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), conducting regular inspections, replacing worn components, and improving crew supervision to maintain optimal cooling system performance.
