Abstract

This study looks into what kinds of metaphors are utilized in Al Jazeera headlines about Palestine. Using qualitative research methods, 16 headlines were examined using Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory, which divides metaphors into structural, orientational, and ontological categories. The study found that orientational metaphors are the most common (50%), followed by ontological (31.25%) and structural metaphors (18.75%). The prevalence of orientational metaphors emphasizes Al Jazeera's use of spatial and relational language to frame the Palestinian struggle and complex global concerns.

Abstract

This study analyzes metaphors in the song lyrics of Coldplay's album "A Head Full of Dreams," applying the conceptual metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson. Using a qualitative methodology, the research identifies 37 metaphorical expressions across the album, categorized into structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors. The findings reveal that ontological metaphors dominate (43.25%), followed by structural (35.14%) and orientational metaphors (21.61%). Metaphors in the lyrics are explored for their conceptual meanings and artistic impact, with an emphasis on themes of life and love. The study concludes that metaphors enrich the emotional depth of lyrics, drawing from cultural and experiential influences to bridge abstract and concrete concepts. This research highlights the significance of metaphors in understanding complex ideas through song lyrics and suggests broader applications of conceptual metaphor theory in analyzing other forms of artistic expressions.

Abstract

This article analyzes the speech of Korean pop idol BTS titled “Love Myself” at the United Nations (UN) forum in 2018 during the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in collaboration with UNICEF. This research was conducted with a focus on the concepts of subject, power, and discourse. The purpose of this research is to reveal how the concepts of language and discourse are used to shape and maintain social reality in the context of popular culture and mental health. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe the practices of meaning, identity construction, and power operations in language. The data is analyzed through critical reading of the text of the speech delivered by Kim Namjoon or RM as a representative of BTS. The theory used in this research is Foucault's discourse analysis with a linguistic turn approach in cultural studies. The results found that the speech delivered by BTS functions as a resistance discourse that defines the subject through self-love narratives, and intervenes in the dominant power structure by reframing the meaning of identity. This research contributes to cultural studies by showing how popular discourse can be an arena for the articulation of power and subjectivity, and opens up new space for discourse analysis in the context of celebrity activism. This research also fills a gap in discourse studies by presenting a critical analysis of the practice of self- representation in contemporary culture that has not been widely explored theoretically.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the “AQUA 100% Murni Air Mineral Pegunungan” television commercial through Stuart Hall's Circuit of Culture approach, which consists of five main elements: representation, identity, production, consumption, and regulation. In addition to revealing the layers of meaning in the visual and verbal messages conveyed, this research also utilizes Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, specifically related to denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The method used is qualitative content analysis of the transcript of the ad video text uploaded on SehatAQUA's official YouTube channel. The results show that the advertisement represents mineral water as a symbol of health, freshness, and an active lifestyle that is harmonious with nature. Consumer identity is formed as a modern individual who cares about health and the environment. Ad production reflects a marketing strategy that is tailored to local values and the aspirations of urban communities. Consumption shows the negotiation of meanings by audiences based on their respective socio-cultural backgrounds, while regulations influence the limits of the content and presentation of advertising messages. This study concludes that television advertising acts not only as a promotional tool but also as a cultural medium that shapes values, identities, and consumption practices in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of code-switching and code-mixing in the film Kaka Bos as a representation of pop culture and digital identity. Using a descriptive-qualitative linguistic approach, the research examines how these linguistic phenomena reflect the identity dynamics of the digital generation and the influence of pop culture in daily interactions. Data were collected from film dialogues containing code-switching and code-mixing between Indonesian, regional languages, and foreign languages (particularly English). The results indicate that the use of these phenomena serves not only as a communication tool but also as an identity strategy to assert connections with global culture while maintaining locality. These findings provide insights into how popular media like films represent linguistic hybridity and identity in the digital era.

Abstract

Poverty is a structural issue that continues to be a persistent discourse in Indonesia. Social media, especially the X platform (formerly Twitter), has become a new space for political figures to convey their narratives, including poverty-related issues. This article analyzes the discourse strategy of Anies Baswedan, former Governor of Jakarta and 2024 presidential candidate, in a thread dated May 3, 2025, which addresses the causes and solutions of poverty. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research examines 14 tweets through Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (2014) and Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework (2003). The findings indicate that Anies frames poverty as a structural problem that requires empathetic and systemic solutions. His discourse strategy emphasizes inclusivity, empathy, and public appreciation. Anies positions himself as someone who understands social inequality and proposes practical solutions based on his leadership experience in Jakarta. Thus, the discourse he constructs is not only informative but also socially and politically persuasive and the provided solution may serve as a basis for formulating faires social policies.

Abstract

This article explores how regional accents in digital communication function as forms of symbolic legitimacy and resistance to the dominance of standardized language. The study analyzes two episodes from the YouTube channel Curhat Bang, featuring speakers with Kerinci and Javanese-Betawi accents recounting their traumatic experiences. Employing a critical sociolinguistic approach, this study draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic power and Lippi-Green’s concept of language ideology. The method used is thematic content analysis of video transcripts and audience comments. The findings reveal that spontaneous speech, local dialects, and non-standard sentence structures are publicly perceived as indicators of honesty, authentic trauma, and narrative credibility. Audience responses not only embrace accent diversity but also affirm regional speech as authentic expression and a vehicle for social solidarity. These results demonstrate that digital media enables resistance to dominant language ideologies and fosters a shift in symbolic value within public communication practices. Accents once considered inferior are now perceived as voices of truth.
