Abstract

This article tries to explore the fundamental values of Confucianism ethics and its influence to the emergence of Capitalism. By using Weber's thesis on the relationship between Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism, this paper concludes that the three important values of Confucianism Ethics (ren: benevolence, humaneness, li: rightness, righteousness, and fittingness, and yi: rules of proper conduct, ritual, and rites) are proposing people on how to become good human beings. If the Confucian follows these ethics properly, he/she will get the successful life. Although it is not guaranteed but the Confucianism ethics are still relevant to be practiced in contemporary situation. Some research findings recently showed that Confucianism ethics have really influence people to fulfill the "calling" (Weber's term) and it has also power to increase the spirit of capitalism. The rise of Japan, China, and the four little dragons (including South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore) is related to the development of Confucianism, and it directly brings down Weber's view point, which taught that Confucianism did not have the spirit of capitalism.

Abstract

Pilgrimage (Ziarah) is one of the common activities done by Indonesian Moslems especially in the tradition of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Indonesian Muslim organization in Indonesia. There are many popular pilgrimage destinations in Indonesia specifically in Java such as graves of Walisongo, Kiai, Moslem leaders and many other well-respected persons who have been considered as giving great contributions towards the spread of Islam and its teaching in Indonesia. One of those very well respected persons is Abdurrahman Wahid, commonly known as Gus Dur, the fourth President of the Indonesian Republic from 1999 to 2001 who Passed away in Jakarta on December 30, 2009. His grave has become one of the most favorite and most visited pilgrimage destinations in Indonesia. This article examines the phenomena happened in Tebuireng since the end of 2009, after the death and funeral of Gus Dur. By using Giddens’s social practice perspective, this article found that the recent pilgrimage in Tebuireng has altered and influenced the social life there. This social practice itself involves two basic elements of Giddens’s theory namely; actor and structure to form its social reality. This article highlights the intersection actions between actor and structure and shows how those actions mark a new way the people define and characterize one’s sainthood. The result of research suggests that the pilgrimage phenomena in Tebuireng involve many actors, from lay people to government, from the economic view to religious reason. Those actors have actively engaged in the practice and new consciousness of pilgrimage (as a structure), as a door to recognize someone as Wali.

Abstract

In the history of Indonesia's struggle to reach its independence, soldiers, scholars, and students had played great roles. Islamic figures such as Ulama' and santri were among those heroes with notable contributions. Although many are not recognized regarding its huge numbers, some has nailed their names nationally for their influential political and religious thoughts. This article tries to explore the political and religious thoughts of Abdul Wahid Hasyim's contribution to the establishment of Islam in Indonesia and the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia. His involvement since the Dutch colonial period, the Japanese occupation, until the independence, shows a santri's struggle for national independence. The result shows that in the context of religion and politics, there are some interesting thoughts delivered by Abdul Wachid Hasyim. His writings on both aspects, religion and politics, predominantly reflect efforts to democratizing different mazhab which led to the modernization of Mazhabiyyah. Wahid Hasyim tried to democratize mazhabiyah differences which previously often cause conflicts and disintegration among Muslims. Wahid Hasyim believes that mazhabiyah differences cannot be obstacles for the unity of the Muslims. On the contrary, these differences can be reformulated to be transformed into a greater concept for the future of Islam. Moreover, he brought about the importance of reconciling political thoughts which can spread unity to the Muslims and Indonesia as a nation. Indonesian Muslims were no longer disintegrated simply due to political issues. He also struggled to reconcile political conflicts involving Muslims and non-Muslims in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study attempts to describe the symbolic interpretations of Ganjuran temple, the sacred hearth shrine in the context of religious and social construction, with the case study on Ganjuran Church, a Catholic church, the sacred heart of Jesus, in Sumbermulyo village, Bambanglipuro, Bantul-Yogyakarta. Based on the qualitative, wherein the data collected through an in-depth interview for, utilizing the theory of religious symbol and communication including the sacred space by Livingston in the book of Anatomy of Religion as its analytical framework, the result showed that in the case of Ganjuran temple, the sacred hearth shrine in Catholic is the indication of religious existence in the context of social and cultural communication. The symbols of the temple as the sacred Catholic placed in four classifications among the identity aspect; the intersection of traditional prosperity, the image of cultural heritage, and also the space of pilgrimage are the discussions on how this place can be popular in the context of the public environment. Every kind of the interpretation regarding the symbol has a specific significance in the reality, in which, each of them is the sign of communication that denotes a certain issue based on the religious and social construction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the encounter of cemetery cases related to Sapta Dharma indigenous religion and how it deals with the state’s regulation on the religious freedom in terms of expression and negotiation with the participants including the society as the victim, the local government, and the dynamic interaction among them. The framework of religious freedom by Elizabeth Shakman Hurd on Believing in Religious Freedom and the discourse of Human Rights and Religion within the debates by Rosalind. I. J. Hackett used to analyze the data. This study found that the case of cemetery in Sapta Dharma in some villages which are located in the region of Brebes Central Java underlines a significant notion on the expression of religious freedom for the Indigenous Religion. Religious freedom in the case of the needs of cemetary in Sapta Dharma also attaches the idea of majority and minority. Sapta Dharma as the minority and Islam as the majority of religion in Brebes create another standing point on the notion that minority is always in contact with such discrimination and oppression. Negotiation and mediation are two important things in putting off the case.

Abstract

Tola’ bala means to refuse or to draw away the danger that might happen. In West Sulawesi it is called Kuliwa. It is being done by the wife of fisherman, punggawa’. The people of Mandar are usually practicing kuliwa ritual before going to fishing or venturing to a journey through the sea. It is an obliged ritual, which is done for inaugurating or welcoming something as in object or through ceremonial acts. For instance, to inaugurate the use and first voyage of a ship, or to acquire machine or other tools used for fishing (jala and gae’), and for the first time for fishing. It is requirement ritual for every fisherman before having a long journey into the sea. They believed that without practicing Kuliwa, something dangerous in the sea might happen during the sailing time. Hereby, this paper aims to explore more on what the way of the people of Mandar is still practicing and maintaining this ritual and how it becomes gather in tradition and religion? Kuliwa is not just talking about tradition, but also the life of religion in Mandar society and further believed as their cultural identity.

Abstract

This study looks at the contemporary phenomena of the birth of two religions within Islam and Christianity, namely Ahmadiyyah and Mormonism. Through the frame of world religion classification, this study emphasizes what makes these sects become and classified by many scholars as New Religions while other sects are not. This study re-looks at how hybrid religions have been crafted, developed and classified based on the age of the religion and where those religions first appeared, this study also looks at the historical process of how these hybrid religions became new religions. By considering the historical process, understanding prophecy, religious teaching, believe and particular interpretation over the main religions, this study aims to understand the emergent process of new religions as temporary shelters for illegitimate sects. By comparing two sects, I conclude that these new religions have some common grounds which can be seen through interpreting the meaning of prophet and prophecy, religious entities that make these sects excluded from the big umbrellas they are under Islam and Christianity.

Abstract

The close relationship between Java and syncretism invites many questions regarding the historical and cultural backgrounds of these two elements. This paper attempts to find out the form of relationship made by the Javanese society and the practice of syncretism. Some literary reviews are presented in portraying the connection of the Javanese society, especially the practices related to Islam, and the practice of syncretism. It is found out that tolerance is the essential key in accommodating Javanese society and syncretism. Indeed, the era of globalization and modernization is one of the challenges in preserving Javanese traditional cultures.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the religious development of Muslim children through their opinions about religion as well as their experience. It is intended to explore their understanding of some religious concepts and the factors influencing their understanding. The main participants of this study are six children in one of the religious private modernist schools in Yogyakarta from the first until the sixth grades (their ages are around 7-12 year old). The researcher expects that the children religious concept develops in accordance with the cognitive development theory. Moreover, since all participants are Muslim, it is expected that there is a different nuance from the previous research which particularly discusses the concept of God. If social environment takes an account of children religious concept, the researcher expects to find out which aspect is more dominant: the aspect of family or the aspect of the school. The results showed that the children religious concept grows as something inseparable from the rest of the children development, from concrete to more abstract knowledge, from simple to more complicated view. The social environment, particularly religious instruction at school, plays a central role in the children's religious concept.

Abstract

Segregations caused by religions may diversely be responded by a group of people. Being partly perceived as a subject for conducting dialogue, religion may also be considered as a segregating factor that shall better be diminished. Religion, for some groups of people, tends also to be seen as contradictory to the nature of science and toleration. To this extent, the notion of engaging the segregated groups of people can also be related to the concept of Asutosh Varshney in terms of promoting civic engagement through social media with a different setting. Although the movement is virtual community based, the promotion of NoReligion is also intended for giving another view in the state realm.Keywords: NoReligion, atheism, engagement, segregation, dismissal of religion
