Abstract

Taha Hussein (1889-1973) and Abbas Mahmud al-Aqqad (1889-1964) are two prominent contemporary scholars in Egypt. This article delivered the comparison of both thoughts regarding to the Greek philosophy, while extensively influenced by the Greek philosophical tradition with two different responses. Thaha Husein so fascinated to the Greek philosophical traditions in which he developed appreciatively as found on his works. While al-Aqqad, he almost concerned on reviewing the value of the Greek philosophical tradition. His interaction to them feels more rigid because he used to accentuate his Arabian color and manifested his resistence when interacting with the Greek philosophical tradition. On several occasions, Al-Aqqad more often criticized them as compared to Thaha Husain. Well-known as westernized, Thaha Husain, instead of being uncritical of Greek philosophy, to him, the beginning of Greek philosophy formulation somehow indicated through their interaction with the Eastern culture. As said, East in the past became a source and reference, albeit limited to the physical aspect. While al-Aqqad, he viewed uncertainly whether Greek or East is the major source of the early emergence of philosophy as a scientific tradition.  Keywords:Greek Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, West, East

Abstract

The development of Islamic print media that targets youth as readers has challenged pesantren for selecting appropriate reading materials for students according to its values and tradition. This paper aims to examine the dynamics life of pesantren as “fortress for the defense of the Islamic community” in dealing with influences coming from outside of pesantren. Analyzing the responses of young leaders of pesantren to print media (books, novels, and magazines) containing Islamic values and symbols, and targeting Muslim teenagers as their readers and consumers, with focusing on how these media might influence the establishment of the cultural identity of santri. My paper will answer two main questions: how do the young pesantren leaders respond on the emergence of many novels and magazines that come into the pesantren? What are the rules and regulations they introduce to preserve the cultural identity of santri? In dealing with the challenge of print media, most of the pesantren where these young pesantren leaders live have an “exception” regarding book materials as an attempt to form and protect the cultural identity of santri.

Abstract

The paper examines the audience’s response in consuming of religious representation in three Indonesian contemporary films: Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love), 3 Doa 3 Cinta (3 Wishes 3 Loves), and Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (Woman with a Scarf Around her Neck). By examining the audience’s response in media, particularly through electronic delivery, the paper shows that the public dispute of the Islam representation in this film serves as communication media of religious dialogue. The examination of audience’s response on those three films illuminates the various impacts of Islamic film label embedded in their cinematic representation. Islamic film can be a profitable trademark since it gives more reasons to attract audience than entertainment motive does. Representation of religion analogue to religious teaching and practice creates religious film as media for religious dialogue between people, state, the faith communities, and film makers. Keywords:film, representation, religious-dialogue

Abstract

The position of woman and knowledge in Islamic perspective has been an interesting issue in Islamic studies. One of the female Muslim scholars who focus her studies on feminism is Sa'diyya Shaikh. By exploring Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, this paper is aimed at explaining the basic concepts of the philosophical hermeneutics of Sa'diyya Shaikh's "Knowledge, Women, and Gender in the Hadith: a Feminist Interpretation" published in 2014. The work is focused on the interpretation responding to the selected texts of the Hadith in "The Book of Knowledge", the collection of the prophetic traditions by Sahih al-Bukhari. It was found out that prejudice influences Shaikh's motivation in interpreting the text. However, as there are neither merely subjective nor objective aspects in the interpretation, Shaikh positions herself in the structures of self-understanding which reveal "the truth" for her within a horizon. Indeed, Shaikh's interpretation is dynamic. Thus, it can still be fixed and changed to invite new perspectives.

Abstract

The image changing of Pati from a religious city to a pub culture city has ensued for fifteen years. Thus, the efforts of restoring the condition will not be easy. Previously, the pubs were used as family pubs. However, nowadays, the number of the pubs has increased. Violence was often used by some religious organizations to solve the problem. Nevertheless, this effort did not give any significant effects. In this article, the religiosity of pub culture is formulized. The result of this study is expected to be one of the concrete solutions for restoring the image of Pati.

Abstract

Serat Cabolek shows the story which represents the Javanese mysticism, especially as told by the story of Dewaruci. The debate among Haji Amad Mutamakin and Ketip Anom about the spirituality of Dewaruci consist of synthesis Javanese and Islamic mysticism. Particularly, it is the emergence of Hinduism and Islam which shapes Javanese mysticism. Looking carefully at the dialogue and debate between Haji Mutamakin and Ketip Anom about the story of Dewaruci it shows that the concept of Javanese mysticism drawn to the fundamental themes such as what life is what to do in life, and how to live in a good life. Story of Dewaruci shows the significance of batin as an inner essence of a person. The goal of life is seeking water of life that is unity with the Divine. The Divine is not outside there and far from human. The mysticism of Java, therefore, is all about life in the world and human relation with himself, others, and the universe. It is about human activities in all their mundane activities and about human understanding of himself and the universe. Javanese mysticism lays in daily activities. It is in everyday life Javanese coming to the essence of life. These daily activities consist of all relations Javanese made the way of thinking Javanese understood and believed. All aspects become a mystic realm.

Abstract

Islamic puritanism movements are the movements compelling to return to the teachings of Quran and Sunnah, as the pure teachings of Islam and abandon even abolish other teachings outside the teachings of Quran and Sunnah. The movements of Islamic puritanism can be considered as transnational movements because they spread their teachings and ideologies, create organizations, networks, and provide financial supports across nations. This paper describes Islamic puritanism movements in Indonesia and their transnational connections. Some Islamic puritanism movements in Indonesia can be considered as part of Islamic transnational movements, in which most of the movements are centered in the Middle East. In Indonesia, Islamic puritanism movements firstly appeared in the beginning of the nineteenth century, called Padri movement in West Sumatra. It was then continued to the emergence of Islamic organizations in the twentieth century. Recently, Islamic puritanism movements in Indonesia mostly take form as Salafism-Wahabism movements.

Abstract

This study attempts to elucidate both of Muslim and Christian understandings toward the idea of religious pluralism, with the case study of Javanese-Christian Church of Pogung and its relation to the surrounding community. It provides the discussion with some theological analyses on how people conceive the meaning of truth and, how this has led to the possibility and necessity of a dialogue; more specifically how their religious doctrines maintain their communities in dealing with other communities. Based on the qualitative approach, wherein the data gathered through in-depth interview and observation, the result of this study revealed that dialogue must be based on personal religious experiences and firm truth claims. Without personal religious experience, there is no way of grasping what the dialogue is all about. Dialogue must be based on the recognition of the possible truth in all religions; the ability to recognize this truth must be grounded in the hypothesis of common ground and goal for all religions. Dialogue must be based on openness to the possibility of genuine change or conversion.

Abstract

The social construction of sainthood lies in a broad-based understanding of Sufism and mysticism in Java. It appears in the way people recognize an individual as a saint in the real life; from fulfilling the role of Islamic propagators and the exercise of magical power as an extraordinary ability to do something. Nowadays, this understanding has apparently flourished, turning into new perceptions and understandings. The case of Gus Dur could be used as an example of the modern constructions of the sainthood in Java. Although there are widespread acceptances this sainthood, but this phenomena remains controversial and debatable. Therefore, this paper focuses on the social construction of new phenomenon called the Wali Sepuluh (the ten saints), to examine the issue of Gus Dur as the tenth saint and its impact on the realities of life in Tebuireng.

Abstract

This paper describes one of the reasons why Islam is so embedded in the identity and the culture of Bugis society. By studying some works of literature about Darul Islam in South Sulawesi and the Bugis pre-Islamic religion, the Islamization process in South Sulawesi was colored by fears, terror, and massacre. It was in Darul Islam Era, under Kahar Muzakar, when Bugis pre-Islamic religion was brutally replaced by Islam since the gerombolan wanted to establish Indonesia Islamic State (NII). This paper also offers a description of Indonesian politics in micro view, the local history of the politics in South Sulawesi.
