Abstract

Since the Iranian Islamic Revolution in 1979, Shia and its community have been the subject of much research. This paper examines the phenomenon of conversion from Sunni to Shia in Indonesia. It seeks to identify the reasons people choose to convert to Shia, even though it can lead to psychological, economic, social, and political tensions. This is a qualitative research based on a fieldwork conducted in four cities in Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Makassar. These cities are representative of Indonesia. The results of the study show that there are at least four 'gates' that are commonly cited as reasons for converting from Sunni to Shia. These gates are philosophy, history, irfan/sufism, and fiqh. The typology of encounters through the four gates is a strong typology that we found in our research. Most people who convert from Sunni to Shia usually pass through one or several gates that are key factors in their decision to accept Shia.

Abstract

The global response to the December 2019 outbreak of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, and its rapid spread to over 200 countries/territories has been intense, with governments, inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, health and humanitarian agencies, medical experts, and religious institutions all paying close attention. Following the discovery of its index case on February 27, 2020 in Lagos state, Nigeria, various measures were implemented to contain the spread of the deadly virus, including full-cum-partial lockdown, quarantine, and ban on social and religious gatherings, closure of religious centers, among others. The implementation of these COVID-19 Guidelines/Protocols began on March 30, 2020, in the affected states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Religious leaders are thus recognized as key stakeholders in the implementation of these guidelines. Using qualitative and analytical research methods, this paper investigated how mosque leaders in Ijebu North-East responded to the implementation of COVID-19 Guidelines and the challenges encountered in the process. Findings revealed that during the total lockdown, prominent Imams at various central mosques in the local government suspended daily and Jumu‘at congregation prayers, Ramadan Tafsir al-Qur'an, Iftar, Tarawih and Tahajjud, and celebrations of ‘Eid-el-Fitri, ‘Eid-el-Adha and Mawlud-en-Nabiyy. During the de-escalation of the lockdown, the NCDC’s COVID-19 Guidelines on Re-Opening Places of Worship were strictly followed. Inadequate resources, misconceptions, and a sense of disbelief among some Muslims in the existence of COVID-19 are among the identified challenges. The study concludes by suggesting how mosque leaders can proactively assist governments in eradicating coronavirus and related diseases.

Abstract

This article specifically examines the resolution of the core values of wasathiyah Islam as an effort to counter the movement of religious radicalism, both directly in the community and in the digital space. Wasathiyah Islam as a form of rahmatan lil 'alamin is an understanding that needs to be disseminated in order to achieve harmony, security, and peace in religion. This article uses a qualitative method of descriptive analysis with library research steps sourced from books, journals, and other supporting data. The article argues that the nature of the value of wasathiyah Islam that consists of: Rahamutiyah (the flow and outpouring of affection without limitation, without discrimination and without pause), Insaniyah (humanity), 'Adliyyah (fairness), Mubadalah (equality), Maslahah (benefit), Mu'ahadah Wathaniyah (maintaining national ties), Dusturiyah (obeying the rules that have been agreed upon, for example the laws that apply in a country), Tasamuh (tolerance), and 'Urfiyah (not rejecting customs/traditions, and can even make them a component of the source of law) needs to be encouraged in various spaces of life, including on the internet. That way, the future of Indonesian Muslims will be protected from exposure to religious radicalism.

Abstract

Peace advocates, conflict analysts, security experts and academia have effortlessly analyzed and advanced various ways to contain the religious insurgency championed by the Boko Ḥarām movement which has threatened Nigeria's quest for peace for more than a decade despite the counter-insurgency measures of successive Nigerian governments. However, recent situations depict that the insurgency remains unabated. This paper examined Nigeria's turbulent decade of religious insurgency, its position within the Islamic context, and Islamically-inclined practicable solution to the threat. It used analytical research method based on existing secondary literature and primary Islamic law sources. The paper reveals that a turbulent decade of Boko Ḥarām insurgency has wreaked havoc on the peace and tranquility previously existing among Nigeria's diverse ethno-religious entities. The analysis of Quranic texts, aḥādīth and opinions of notable scholars also indicates that religious insurgency associated with Boko Ḥarām is inconsistent with Islamic doctrines. Tolerance among religionists, proper religious teachings and interpretation of divine scripture, genuine inter and intra-faith dialogues, Islamic leadership-cum-governance paradigms, among others, were the identified Islamic-modelled panacea to the insurgency. The paper concludes that if the identified Islamic model can be embraced and considered in the scheme of things by religious and political leaders, as well as their ardent followers, the current religious insurgency would be drastically curtailed, thereby advancing sustainable peace in Nigeria.

Abstract

The critics of Islam have hypothesized that several teachings of Islam jeopardize the modern nation-state and its law and order. Islam is perceived as a part of the problem rather than a solution. Islam, however, has a rich inheritance of addressing conflicts in the world. The Islamic texts and Muslim heritage approaches to conflict resolution draw on religious values and present a considerable wealth of responses based on positive solutions to the conflict. The terms/concepts like social justice al-adl to the terms like sulh, translated as settlement and mūslāha translated as reconciliation, wasta (patronage-mediation), tāhkim (arbitration), and importantly salam a peace greeting among Muslims form the conceptual framework of the conflict resolution and peacebuilding in Islam. The specific term for non-violence in the Arabic language is not known, however the alternate vocabulary which stresses non-vehemence and peace is al-unf (no force), sabr (patience), akhlāq (virtuous character), etc. Since the conflict begins within a person, one strives to resolve that conflict through aql (intellect) to fight al-hawa (passions and desire) to overcome jahl (ignorance) with ikhlas (purity) then ihsan (beneficence) or putting the good and beautiful into practice is exercised and above all fighting for social justice jihad. This paper is an effort to build the theoretical aspect of Islam and conflict resolution. A descriptive research design has been employed for the present study. The data was collected through primary and secondary sources of information, and the method of data collection adopted was content analysis.

Abstract

Corporate governance involves a set of administrative relationships between a company and other stakeholders. The shareholders and management should take part in protecting the interests of all stakeholders by making decisions and building policy framework processes that fulfill the stakeholders’ needs. As far as Islamic corporate governance (ICG) is concerned, the institution of the Shari’ah board comes into the picture and plays a crucial role in favoring the interest of the stakeholders by ensuring that all corporation activities are in line with the Shari’ah principles. This paper attempts to examine the administrative relationships between the SB and other stakeholders by looking at the duties, roles, and responsibilities of the SB toward other stakeholders and vice versa in Brunei Darussalam. For this purpose, it relies on doctrinal and Islamic worldview methodologies and uses both content and legal analysis methods. After the discussion, it is concluded that the administrative relationship between the Shari’ah board and other stakeholders may take the form of imamah (ultimate authority), wilayah (specific authority), taʿlimiyah (educational), or istishariyah (consultative) relationship, depending on the type of relevant stakeholder. Nonetheless, to align the administrative relationship between SB and other stakeholders with these notions, further legal and regulatory amendments need to be made to the Bruneian Shariah governance framework.

Abstract

In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss the inclusive approach of cognitive science with Islamic philosophy. Islamic philosophy has put forth a significant role in the development of cognitive science.  The emergence of cognitive science in Islamic philosophy commences with the knowledge about heart, soul, ‘reasoning’, ‘aql’, cognition ‘marifat’ contemplation ‘fikr’ meditation ‘zikr’, mystic cognition, and their relation with the mental processes like ‘tafakur’, ‘tadabur’, ‘taakiloon’ and learn ‘iqra’. This paper tries to show the novel ideas of cognitive science with the new advances and researches in Neuro-theology, religious mantras and spiritual nexus. It also discusses the basic building blocks of cognitive sciences which are ilm (knowledge), mind, heart, soul, reasoning, language, intellect and mystic cognition. As the role of Islamic philosophers are significant in the emergence of cognitive science and there are various thinkers who led their contribution in cognitive science but I have included only some notable Islamic cognitive scientists in this paper. This paper also examines the future aspect of religious sciences in the growth of cognitive science.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of theology on the slaughter techniques applied in the two traditions, as well as to see how the differences and similarities in these religious teachings contribute to the development and application of halal and kosher certification in the food industry. The study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method, which involves analyzing academic literature, fatwa documents, halal/kosher guidelines, and certification standards. The results show that both traditions share similarities in the use of sharp tools, thorough bloodletting, and respect for animal welfare, reflecting adherence to ethical and spiritual principles. However, there are fundamental differences, such as the prohibition of stunning in kosher, and the role of the shochet as a trained slaughterer in the Jewish tradition. Halal and kosher certification play an important role in ensuring adherence to religious principles amidst the challenges of mass production in the modern food industry. Despite these obstacles, both traditions continue to emphasize the balance between spiritual and ethical needs in food consumption, making the principles of animal welfare and food safety a top priority in maintaining the integrity of religious values in the modern era.
