Abstract

Injection molding is one of the methods used in plastic forming processes. This study aims to optimize the screw-type injection molding machine owned by the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of xyz, which was previously developed by xyz students. However, the machine had several deficiencies, such as barrel leakage, imperfect feeding in the hopper, unstable heating, and only one mold variation, namely a keychain mold. These issues reduced production efficiency. To overcome these problems, the machine was optimized by replacing and redesigning components such as the screw, barrel, nozzle, transmission system, and by adding a new mold variation for a half-inch pipe clamp. The method involved redesigning and testing based on operational parameters, including feeding temperature, injection temperature, injection time, and cooling time.Testing was conducted by setting the feeding temperature to 220°C, injection temperature between 290°C and 310°C, injection time between 11 and 13 seconds, and cooling time of 15 seconds. The material used was polypropylene (PP). The results showed that the optimal parameters were a feeding temperature of 220°C, injection temperature of 310°C, injection time of 12 seconds, and cooling time of 15 seconds. The resulting product exhibited good quality, with complete filling, no flash, and smooth surface finish. This indicates that the optimized screw-type injection molding machine successfully resolved the previous issues.

Abstract

Bench work (kerja bangku) is a foundational manual-skills practicum in mechanical and manufacturing engineering education. It requires sustained non-neutral postures—forward trunk flexion, downward neck flexion toward the vice, and repetitive upper-limb exertion—that expose students to work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) risk early in their careers. Conventional ergonomic evaluation relies on manual observation, which is subjective, labour-intensive, and difficult to scale across large student cohorts. This study presents a markerless computer-vision pipeline that estimates body joint angles from ordinary RGB video and automatically derives Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) scores for students performing bench-work tasks. Two-dimensional pose estimation localized anatomical landmarks; sagittal joint angles for the neck, trunk, upper arm, lower arm, and wrist were computed from landmark coordinates and mapped to RULA segment scores. Thirty engineering students were recorded performing five representative tasks (filing, hacksawing, marking/scribing, chiselling, and hand-tapping). The mean RULA grand score across tasks was 6.0, with 92% of observations falling in action levels 3–4 (“investigate and change”). Vision-derived joint angles agreed with manual goniometry to within a mean absolute error of 4.8°, and RULA grand scores matched an expert assessor within ±1 point in 96.7% of cases (weighted Cohen’s κ = 0.82). The results show that markerless computer vision offers a low-cost, objective, and scalable instrument for ergonomics education, posture feedback, and bench-station redesign.

Abstract

Slurry generated from biogas production is commonly treated using natural drying methods, which require 30–40 days and intensive manual handling, making the process inefficient for practical applications. This study aims to design and evaluate the performance of a slurry drying machine utilizing LPG as a heat source with a capacity of 30 kg. The research methodology includes mechanical design, fabrication, and experimental performance testing. The developed system integrates a mechanical pressing unit, a rotating mixing drum, and a controlled LPG heating system driven by a 0.5 HP electric motor. Experimental results show that the machine is capable of reducing slurry mass by approximately 50% within 150 minutes at an operating temperature of 65–70 °C. The highest drying rate occurred during the first 30 minutes, indicating rapid moisture removal in the initial stage. Compared to conventional solar drying, the proposed system significantly reduces processing time while improving drying consistency. The developed machine demonstrates potential as an efficient and practical solution for converting biogas slurry into value-added organic fertilizer, particularly for small to medium-scale farming applications.

Abstract

Shock absorbers are commonly represented by a constant viscous damping coefficient, although their actual force response may vary nonlinearly with piston velocity, stroke amplitude, and operating conditions. This study experimentally compared the damping characteristics of original and aftermarket rear shock absorbers using a laboratory test rig with variable-speed and variable-stroke operation. Both specimens were tested at strokes of 60, 90, and 120 mm and excitation frequencies of 0.5–2.0 Hz, corresponding to peak piston velocities of 0.0942–0.7539 m/s. Maximum damping forces were measured using a force gauge, and the resulting force–velocity relationships were evaluated before and after modification of the test rig. Three-term sinusoidal functions were also fitted to the measured data using the MATLAB Curve Fitting Tool. Both shock absorbers exhibited nonlinear digressive behaviour, characterised by a rapid force increase at low-to-intermediate velocities followed by a stroke-dependent high-speed plateau. Matched-velocity comparisons showed that damping force varied with stroke even at approximately equal peak velocities, demonstrating that the response was not governed by piston velocity alone. Using the post-modification data, the aftermarket shock absorber generated an average damping force 15.8% higher than the original unit over the complete test matrix. Its peak force exceeded that of the original shock absorber by 29.4%, 9.8%, and 12.6% at strokes of 60, 90, and 120 mm, respectively. The corresponding apparent damping coefficients were also consistently higher for the aftermarket unit. These findings demonstrate that shock-absorber performance should be evaluated using experimentally determined force–velocity operating maps across multiple strokes and velocities rather than a single nominal damping coefficient.
