Abstract

Low science learning outcomes remain a challenge in elementary education, particularly when learning activities are dominated by teacher-centered instruction. This study was motivated by the low average science achievement of Grade VI students at SD Negeri 66 Mambo, which was recorded at 67.14. To address this issue, the study implemented the role-playing learning model as an alternative instructional strategy to improve students’ science learning outcomes.  This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles. Data were collected through observation sheets to measure teacher and student activities and achievement tests to assess students’ learning outcomes. The findings indicate a significant improvement in both learning processes and outcomes following the implementation of the role-playing model. Teacher activity increased from an average of 62.5% in Cycle I to 85.25% in Cycle II. Similarly, student activity showed a notable improvement, rising from 50% in Cycle I to 83.3% in Cycle II. Regarding learning outcomes, the initial average class score of 67.14 with a learning completeness percentage of 50% increased to 75.17 in Cycle I, representing an improvement of 11.96% and a mastery percentage of 57.14%. Further improvement was observed in Cycle II, with the class average score increasing to 87.85, a learning outcome improvement of 30.84%, and 85.71% of students achieving mastery.  These results demonstrate that the role-playing learning model is effective in enhancing student engagement and improving science learning outcomes. It means that they were still on enough category. On cycle two based on the students’ reading test in second cycle 88% students got score 75 or more and 12% students got score less than 75. In other words, 22 students got score 75 or more and 3 students got score less than 75. It means, 88% students have met the criteria of success and 12% students have failed. It was supported by the average score of students activity based on observation sheets was 8.24 in first meeting improve 9.12 in second meeting and become 10.48 in the third meeting. It means that they were on good category. Finally, it is recommended for the English teacher to apply this technique as one of the alternatives that could be used in teaching reading because this technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension through the use of magazines. The research was conducted at SMPN 2 Lasusua with 26 first-grade students as the subjects. The researcher employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, implemented in two cycles, to enhance the learning process and students’ comprehension skills. Each cycle included planning, action, observation, and reflection stages.  Data were collected using reading comprehension tests administered at the end of each cycle. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension scores across the two cycles. The average score increased from 61.1 in Cycle 1 to 83.3 in Cycle 2. This improvement was particularly evident in students’ ability to identify main ideas, a critical component of reading comprehension. Observation of classroom activities also indicated increased student engagement and motivation during learning sessions using magazines.  The results suggest that incorporating magazines into reading instruction can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing comprehension skills. The visual and contextual support provided by magazines helps students to connect text with real-life contexts, facilitating better understanding and retention of information.  Based on these findings, it is recommended that English teachers integrate magazines as supplementary materials in reading lessons. Additionally, further research can explore the effectiveness of different types of magazines or other authentic materials to improve students’ higher-order reading skills. This study highlights the importance of active, student-centered approaches in fostering literacy and comprehension in secondary education.

The results obtained from all 17 Swan National School Kindergarten group A students in cycle I showed that there were 7 children who achieved very good development, and 6 children developed according to expectations. In the second cycle, improvement results were obtained, namely 11 children developed very well and 4 children developed as expected. Based on the data obtained, there was an increase in the ability to express opinions in group A of the Swan National School Kindergarten, namely from 76.5% in cycle I to 86% in cycle II, so it can be concluded that through storytelling activities it was quite successful in increasing children's ability to express opinions. Therefore, this research was carried out in only two cycles, in order to maximize storytelling activities, so that the ability to express opinions can achieve satisfactory results. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted over two cycles with 32 students as participants. Each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected using student learning outcome tests and analyzed through descriptive quantitative statistical techniques. The findings revealed a progressive improvement in students’ performance: the average score increased from 77 in the first cycle to 82 in the second cycle. Observations indicated that PBL enhanced students’ engagement, collaboration, and ability to apply knowledge to solve problems. Moreover, students demonstrated improved critical thinking and creativity in writing fantasy stories. The results suggest that the PBL model effectively fosters active learning, promotes higher-order thinking skills, and enhances student learning outcomes in Indonesian language education. Implementing PBL encourages collaborative problem-solving, the integration of knowledge and skills, and the application of learning to authentic tasks.
