Abstract

The final project is based on a study which attempt to examine WhatsApp messenger as mobile learning technique to the students’ writing skill in caption at SMAN 4 Bangkalan in academic year of 2017/2018. This final project has an objective; how effective student’s used whatsapp messenger as mobile learning technique to writing ability. This study was conducted by using quantitative especially experimental method; there was form of pre-experimental research design. The researcher used some variables in research. The first was as the independent that was guiding whatsapp messenger as mobile learning technique and the second was as the dependent variable that was on students’ writing ability. The researcher used SPSS.23 for counting the result of test. The result showed that there was effect to the student’s writing ability by using whatsapp messenger as mobile learning technique. With regard to the previous result, it can be concluded that the teaching writing ability by using whatsapp messenger resulted a better achievement.

Abstract

Integrating face to face and online learning are growing rapidly. Recently, blended learning is a model of learning that able to enhance and optimize learning. This paper describes learners’ behavior in the implementation of blended learning through the University’s Learning Management System (LMS). This model is the combination of face-to-face and online learning which consist of many applications such as student voice recording, user roles, courses, students’ assessment, discussion forum, and internal communication. The intensions of this study is to observe the students’ behavior on language learning implemented by blended learning model. We further attempt to understand the students’ behavior, attitude, and achievement. The participants of this study are 37 students from the first semester of Informatics Technology (IT) department. The students were taught in blended learning approach by using ‘eBelajar’. Based on the results of the implementation of blended learning in the teaching and learning process, the researchers found that blended learning was more effective and efficient educational experiences rather than face-to-face learning. The findings of this study also showed that students were satisfied with the use of blended learning in the teaching-learning process, and their academic achievements were also better than expected. It is suggested that the teachers and students can use blended learning for others subjects in order to make the teaching-learning process more alive and make the students feel enjoy in joining the learning processes.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know that KWL (Know, Want To Know, and Learn) can improve students’ understanding and can be implemented in reading class. Reading as one of the skills to be performed elsewhere. There are some texts that must be mastered in reading skills, one of them is the narrative text. Narrative text is a series or story that is imaginative, in the context of narrative text students may be difficult, students can only read but do not understand what is written from the text they read. Therefore KWL with prezi is one of the best strategies suitable for the 11th grade students to be more active and easier in learning to read comprehension. The object of the study was to find the KWL technique with prezi effectively in writing narrative texts. The sample of this research is eleventh grade of SMKN 1 Labang that is class RPL.1 as a control class, and class RPL.2 as an experiment class. Each class consists of 20 students. The method used in this research is quantitative method. In addition, the design used was quasi experimental research, and the instrument of this study was a written test. Significant influence was shown by the average post-test students in the experimental class treated with KWL with prezi technique greater than the post-test average in the control group class that was not treated with the KWL with prezi technique.

Abstract

Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols for the purpose of deriving meaning (reading comprehension) and constructing meaning. It means that learning reading is significant because it has an aim to understand the meaning of what is read. The researcher should make students interested in the material given because the first semester students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Bangkalan have problem to understand the contents of what is read. Based on the observation, the use of picture series was able to increase students’ skill of reading narrative text. And students could comprehend the narrative text easily. Besides that, it will contribute in making teaching learning of reading more relax, enjoyable, the good response and can avoid from boredom. Third, other researcher, It is suggested to give useful to the next researcher in develop their study especially the using of picture series in teaching reading.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the effectiveness of “Recount Board Game” in teaching and learning students’ speaking skills to the the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 3 Semarang, Indonesia. The researchers used quasi experimental method and chose two classes for it, they were: X-1 as experimental class with 33 students and X-2 as control class with 34 students. In the both of classes, researchers conducted the research in three steps: pre-test, treatment, and post-test to look for the data then were analyzed by using SPSS for Windows Version 21.0. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference in the result of pre-test and post-test in both of two classes. The mean of pre-test in experimental group was 59.19 and the mean of post-test in experimental group was 83.03. Whereas the mean of pre test in control group was 57.65 and the mean of the post-test in control group was 76.47. Based on independent t-test, t-value was higher than t-table (4.474 ˃ 1.997) and p < 0.05 (0.000< 0.05). It meant that there was a significant difference in the student’s skills achievement between the experimental and control groups. So, it could be concluded that H1 was accepted and the use recount board game was effective in teaching students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Learners need to motivate themselves to be an autonomy learner. They must be active to find many efforts to increase their skill. In listening class, the lecturers need to stimulate the students’ ability in listening skill by applying a sequence questions in form of Listening Log. From the listening Log, it can be illustrated the students effort to listen many listening passage from many sources and places. They do not only study by depend on the teaching and learning in a classroom. Based on the listening log, it can be seen that most of the students were aware about their responsible toward listening skill.

Abstract

Speaking has become an important skill in learning English as foreign language. The importance of speaking is shown by its function in the communication. By speaking English, we can communicate fluently with other people in the whole world. There are many factors which have influenced the students’ speaking skill. One of them is teaching method or strategy as external factor. Think-Pair-Share (TPS) or thinking in pairs is one type of cooperative learning method designed to influence the pattern of students’ interaction. This research has given evidence that TPS method is more effective than Direct Instruction method to teach speaking skill. This research is a classroom action research which consists of four steps to do: planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect the data of speaking skill, the researcher needs the instrument which is called a test. Besides speaking test instrument, researcher also used observation sheet to collect activities and development data. There is significant improvement on students speaking skill who taught by Think Pair Share method with flashcard media. It proved by the enhancement of average speaking score from 63.2 at the pretest result, become 73.2 at the first cycle and still increase to be 83 at the second cycle. The flashcard media were useful and effective to improve students’ speaking skill as described in finding and result of this study, as it improves class mastery achievement from 17.5% on the pretest, become 60% on the first cycle, and become 87.5% on the second cycle.

Abstract

English as a foreign language make students in Indonesian faced some difficulties in understanding the meaning and structure of language. This condition also happen at MA Al Huda Sumber Nangka Pamekasan. To overcomethis basic problems, so teacher need a good method in their teaching process especially in speaking that is have an important roles in mastering language. 2013 curriculumrevision implemented High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) method. The purpose of this research is to know the factors that affected students low mastery of English and to describe headmaster and teachers point of view about the implementation of HOTS method in students mastery. The research design of this research was used descriptive qualitative. Researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire and documentation asinstrument in data collection. After got the data,researcher analyzed the data by using Miles and Huberman. The result showed that factors which make students have a low speaking ability are students attitude, motivation to study well and also lack of parental supervision of students learning outcome. Headmaster and teacher very appreciate with the implementation of 2013 curriculum revision in order to increase education quality. It can be prove that students speaking skill at MA AlHuda better than before by using HOTS method.

Abstract

Duolingo application is an online free language educational application. It become more suitable, innovative and applicable way to learn english in EFL classroom. The aim of this study is to find out the students perception towards the use of duolingo application in learning English. The method used in this study is a descrptive research. Then, subject of the study are students at computer engineering department, Politeknik Negeri Jember. The result of this study revealed that computer engineering Department students at Politeknik Negeri Jember come to realize duolingo as a software that is easy to use, interesting and enjoyable for learning English. In addition, duolingo bring a new concept (gamification) in learning English. Thus, it makes them very exciting in learning English.

Abstract

This research explored the effectiveness of using collaborative writing strategy for writing ability of the students and it used quasi experimental for the method. This study emplyed two groups namely experimental group and the control group. Both classes received different treatment. For the experimental group, the students were taught by using collaborative strategy while the control were not. The population were 10th grade students of MA Al-Ibrohimy. The data collection technique used the covariance analysis (ANCOVA). Results indicated that the collaborative writing approach appears to be more effective than traditional method in teaching literacy. However, both the study and control groups demonstrated a statistically significant difference in writing skills when tested in post-test words. The test data were analyzed using covariance analysis (ANCOVA). Results indicated that the collaborative writing approach appears to be more effective than traditional method in teaching literacy.
