Abstract

Providing supplementary food made from local ingredients is an effective way to address nutritional issues among toddlers. In Desa Rundeng, toddlers are underweight due to poor dietary habits, such as frequent consumption of fast food and insufficient intake of fruits, vegetables, milk, and other nutritious foods. Additionally, mothers in the area have limited knowledge about preparing balanced supplementary foods to support toddler growth. This study aims to examine the factors influencing the provision of supplementary food for toddlers in Desa Rundeng. A quantitative descriptive research method was employed, with univariate and bivariate data analysis, conducted in May in Desa Rundeng, Aceh Barat, within the Johan Pahlawan Health Center area. A total of 68 respondents participated in the study. The results indicate that knowledge, attitude, income, and socio-cultural factors significantly affect the provision of supplementary food, as evidenced by a p-value < 0.05. These findings highlight the importance of educating mothers on the nutritional value of supplementary foods to ensure the healthy growth and development of toddlers.

Abstract

Unhealthy eating behaviors represent a significant issue among university students, particularly those experiencing academic and psychological pressures. These conditions can lead to stress and anxiety, which may escalate into depression. Furthermore, the adverse effects of unhealthy eating behaviors driven by depression can severely impact students' health, often resulting in neglect of nutritional intake. This negligence contributes to nutritional problems such as malnutrition, overnutrition, and the onset of chronic diseases. This study aims to examine the relationship between depression and eating behaviors among final-year students at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Teuku Umar. Utilizing a quantitative cross-sectional approach, the study involved a population of 223 final-year students, with a sample size of 70 selected in 2023/2024. Conducted in June 2024, the research employed questionnaires for primary data collection. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. Results revealed a significant association between depression and eating behaviors (p = 0.001, CI 95% = 1.899–15.902). Among the participants, 64.3% exhibited depressive symptoms, and 61.4% demonstrated unhealthy eating behaviors. The analysis indicated that students with depression were 1.94 times more likely to engage in unhealthy eating behaviors. This study concludes that depression significantly increases the risk of unhealthy eating behaviors among final-year students.

Abstract

Toddler nutrition is critical for children aged 1-5 years to support optimal growth and development, requiring a balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. This study aims to evaluate the influence of nutrition education delivered through leaflets on enhancing parental knowledge about proper nutrition for toddlers. Conducted in Rantoe Panyang Village, this research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The population consisted of 62 mothers with toddlers, selected using total sampling to include the entire population. The findings revealed a significant relationship between nutrition education using leaflets and improved parental knowledge. The study concludes that nutrition education facilitated through leaflet media positively impacts parental understanding of toddler nutrition. These results underscore the importance of targeted educational interventions in improving knowledge and dietary practices among parents, ultimately contributing to better nutritional outcomes for children.

Abstract

Tofu a widely consumed and affordable food, is traditionally made using acetic acid as a coagulant. This study explores the use of kaffir lime and musk lime juice as natural coagulants due to their availability, affordability, and high acidity. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) factorial approach was applied to assess the effects of lime type (kaffir lime and musk lime) and juice concentration (5%, 10%, and 15%) on tofu quality, focusing on water content, protein content, and organoleptic properties (color, aroma, texture, and overall acceptability). Water content decreased with higher lime concentrations, while protein content peaked at 10% musk lime juice (19.18%). Organoleptic tests showed tofu made with 10% and 15% musk lime juice was preferred over kaffir lime. Statistical analysis using ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test confirmed significant effects (p-value < 0.05). The findings suggest that musk lime juice, particularly at 10% and 15% concentrations, is an effective natural coagulant, producing tofu with better nutritional quality and consumer appeal compared to kaffir lime juice.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between menstrual cycle patterns, breakfast habits, physical activity, and nutritional status among adolescents at SMP 2 Meureubo. The research aims to identify key factors influencing menstrual cycle regularity. A total of 53 students were selected using a random sampling method for this cross-sectional quantitative study. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire assessing breakfast habits, levels of physical activity, and nutritional status determined by Body Mass Index (BMI). Chi-square analysis revealed statistically significant associations, with breakfast habits (p<0.05) and physical activity (p<0.05) playing critical roles in maintaining menstrual regularity. Adolescents with consistent breakfast routines demonstrated a 77% improvement in cycle regularity, while adequate physical activity contributed to a 73% enhancement in consistency. The findings underscore the importance of balanced nutrition and physical activity in promoting healthy menstrual patterns. The study recommends targeted health education programs focusing on balanced meals, regular exercise, and consistent monitoring of nutritional health to improve adolescent menstrual health outcomes.

Abstract

Anemia remains a significant global health concern, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting a prevalence of 29.9% in 2023. Among pregnant women aged 15–49, anemia affects over half a billion individuals, potentially leading to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental disorders due to inadequate iron reserves in newborns. Despite efforts at the Johan Pahlawan Health Center to distribute Fe tablets to 921 pregnant women, cases of low hemoglobin (Hb) levels persist. This study aims to examine the relationship between compliance with Fe tablet consumption and Hb levels in pregnant women. Using an analytical survey with a cross-sectional approach, data were collected from 48 pregnant women in May 2024. Chi-Square statistical analysis revealed a significant association between Fe tablet adherence and Hb levels, with a p-value of 0.024. These findings indicate that adherence to Fe tablet consumption correlates with improved Hb levels among pregnant women in the Johan Pahlawan Health Center's working area. Future studies are encouraged to explore the impact of high-iron dietary intake on maternal weight gain during pregnancy to provide a comprehensive understanding of maternal nutrition.

Abstract

The participation of mothers with toddlers in Posyandu (Integrated Health Service Post) activities is essential for monitoring children's growth, health, and nutrition through regular weighing with the Towards Health Card (KMS). In 2020, only 43.3% of toddlers in West Aceh were weighed, with Puskesmas Johan Pahlawan recording just 13.9% in 2023, and Gampa Village showing only 0.15% from July to September. This study aimed to identify factors influencing mothers' visits to Posyandu in Gampa Village, West Aceh District. Using a descriptive correlation method with a cross-sectional design, 125 mothers with toddlers were selected from a population of 358 through accidental sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Significant relationships were found between Posyandu visits and education (p = 0.046), knowledge (p = 0.041), and family support (p = 0.003), while no significant relationships were observed for occupation (p = 0.337) and distance to Posyandu (p = 0.773). Strengthening counseling and socialization efforts is recommended to improve maternal awareness of the importance of regular Posyandu attendance for children's growth and development monitoring.

Abstract

Breast milk is recognized as the optimal source of nutrition for infants, particularly during the early stages of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by complementary feeding while continuing breastfeeding for up to two years. The Johan Pahlawan Health Center reported one of the lowest rates of exclusive breastfeeding coverage in West Aceh District in 2020, at 24.7%. This study aims to identify factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding practices among mothers in Gampa Village, Johan Pahlawan District, West Aceh Regency. Employing a cross-sectional research design with a quantitative approach, data for dependent and independent variables were collected simultaneously. A purposive sampling method was used, and statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of ?=0.05. The findings revealed that among 34 respondents, 30 mothers (88.2%) provided exclusive breastfeeding, while 4 mothers (11.8%) did not. The study concluded that variables such as education, occupation, and knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding are significantly related to breastfeeding practices, whereas age showed no significant relationship with exclusive breastfeeding in the study population.

Abstract

This study explores the history and socio-economic impact of Pancur Batu Market from 1960 to 2022, focusing on trader activities and community effects. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Pancur Batu Market has evolved significantly from a colonial-era facility into a pivotal economic and social hub for the local community. Officially inaugurated in the 1970s, the market facilitates the sale of basic necessities and serves as a platform for social interaction. Trading activity intensifies on Saturdays, attracting crowds that cause congestion and lead some traders to operate exclusively on these days. The market plays a vital role in community life, fostering social harmony and providing a primary livelihood source for many residents. Economically, it generates business opportunities and improves living standards. Despite challenges such as competition and price fluctuations, Pancur Batu Market remains a cornerstone of the community's socio-economic landscape.
