Abstract

Surabaya has experienced a long historical journey, starting from the influence of the Javanese Kingdoms, Singasari, successively under the rule of the Majapahit, Demak, Pajang, and then finally the Islamic Mataram. The new chapter of Surabaya was under foreign influence when the Dutch came to the beginning of the 17th Century. The impact of the Dutch colonialism was the large number of Indische buildings in the Old City area of Surabaya. This arcticle explains the research result based on a qualitative method and inductive reasoning. towards the distribution of Indische buildings in the City of Surabaya.  It is divided into the Old Surabaya and New Surabaya cluster areas. Apart from the condition of most of the Indische buildings today that has undergone many changes, several Indische buildings that still exist today are considers as city landmarks of Surabaya. Eventhough, along with the development of the city of Surabaya, many Indische buildings have been dismantled and replaced with modern buildings.

Abstract

This article discusses the use and function of raadhuis buildings, as well as water towers in Palembang City. This building has a multi-story structure with a concrete frame. The mayor of d'Armandville initiated the design of this building, a concept that Lissa Nessel, the subsequent mayor, carried forward. In this article, we will discuss buildings and non-buildings in the form of reinforced concrete from the construction of raadhuis and water tower buildings during that period, including notes on the development of the Palembang city hall complex, which has not been widely disclosed. Using archaeological and historical data, the aim of writing this article is to examine the development of the use, function, and expert design of this building complex, both during the colonial period and today. We conducted the research in four stages of archaeological-historical study: data collection, data analysis, data processing, and data writing. We cannot separate the results of the study of multi-story structures with concrete frames from the presence of the elite contractor Hollandsche Beton Maatschapij NV (HBM), based in Talang Jawa, Palembang. HBM was an early investor in the city of Palembang, which developed reinforced concrete as a structural material that was able to properly distribute construction loads evenly. So, architect S. Snuyf's design of Palembang City Hall can accommodate various structural elements. The presence of reinforced concrete from the Raadhuis construction triggered the construction of other reinforced concrete buildings in the city of Palembang.

Abstract

In connection with the stone tool technology products, so far research on prehistoric cave life has always been associated with mesolithic technology as a cultural product. Specifically for the main findings from the Sampung site in East Java, a more specific mesolithic culture was found, namely the culture of bone tools. This industry is highlighted by the bone tools products in the form of abundant spatula, stone tools (predominantly non-massive tools), beaded jewelry made of shells, and folded graves. One thing that needs to be questioned here is: do the cultural products of the caves in the East Java region always show the characteristics of the mesolithic culture that have been broadly formulated as mentioned above? This paper will try to display new data that is not in line with these assumptions, namely the Mount Watang Cave Site, which is located in Lojejer Village, Wuluhan District, Jember Regency, East Java. Data obtained from the excavation of Yogyakarta Archaeology Center.

Abstract

One concept for utilizing heritage buildings is adaptive reuse. It is applied to industrial heritage such as the Colomadu Sugar Factory. For a long time, the building was abandoned and unproductive. This study aims to examine the changes in the function of the ex-sugar factory machines and their role in the interior design of De Tjolomadoe. The research method uses qualitative methods to identify changes in the function of ex-sugar factory machines as current interior elements. The building is brought back to life with a new spirit. Machines from the former sugar factory are maintained and given new functions, which includes: as a supporting element of the sense of place, museum collections, aesthetic elements, and furniture design. The existence of ex-sugar factory machines is an important and unique interior element as well as authentic proof of the glory of the sugar factory.
