Abstract

Background: The most common nutritional disorder experienced by pregnant women is Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED). CED in pregnant women is a condition of insufficient energy and protein intake during pregnancy that can cause health problems for the mother and fetus. Pregnancy is not a disease, but a normal and natural phenomenon. Pregnant women with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) are pregnant women at risk of CED, which is characterized by a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of less than 23.5 cm. Nutritional problems in pregnant women, especially Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED), are a public health problem that affects the health of mothers and fetuses. One factor influencing the incidence of CED is pregnant women's knowledge of nutrition during pregnancy. This study aims to determine the relationship between pregnant women's knowledge of pregnancy nutrition and the incidence of CED at the Timbaan Village Health Post, Bandar District, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra Province in 2024. Methods: This study was quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. The population was all pregnant women visiting the Timbaan Village Health Post, and a sample of 40 respondents was drawn using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a questionnaire to determine the level of knowledge of pregnant women and to measure nutritional status using the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The results of the study showed that most pregnant women had insufficient knowledge (57.5%), and most experienced CED (55%). The chi-square test results showed a significant relationship between pregnant women's knowledge of pregnancy nutrition and the incidence of CED (p-value = 0.012 < 0.05). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between pregnant women's knowledge of pregnancy nutrition and the incidence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED). It is hoped that health workers can improve nutrition education and counseling for pregnant women to prevent CED.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is recommended by WHO and UNICEF to ensure optimal infant growth and development. However, exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Indonesia, including Deli Serdang Regency, remains low. Several factors can hinder exclusive breastfeeding, including maternal knowledge, occupation, and the role of healthcare workers. Objective: To determine the factors inhibiting exclusive breastfeeding among mothers with infants at PMB Nurlela, Lubuk Pakam Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency, in 2024. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 30 mothers with infants aged 0–12 months who did not exclusively breastfeed. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis to describe the frequency distribution of each variable. Results: The majority of respondents were aged 20–35 years (53.3%), had a senior high school education (46.7%), and worked as housewives (43.4%). Most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding (43.3%), rated the role of healthcare workers as good (83.3%), and did not exclusively breastfeed (66.7%). Statistical tests showed that maternal knowledge (p = 0.006), occupation (p = 0.003), and the role of healthcare workers (p = 0.006) were associated with exclusive breastfeeding practices. Conclusion: Maternal knowledge, occupation, and the role of healthcare workers are significant factors inhibiting exclusive breastfeeding at PMB Nurlela. Efforts to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates should focus on continuous education, workplace support for breastfeeding mothers, and optimizing the role of healthcare workers.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: The incidence of stunting in West Sumatra Province has increased significantly in 2021, with a prevalence of 23.3% to 25.2% in 2022. This figure can be considered a setback because it is above the national figure (21.6%), where Sijunjung Regency is the fourth largest contributor to stunting rates, amounting to 30% based on the results of the Indonesian Status Survey (SSGI) by the Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in 2022 (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2022). The high rate of stunting is triggered by various factors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2014), factors that cause stunting experienced by children include nutritional status, exclusive breastfeeding, lack of nutritious food consumption, and disease infections. In addition, there are other causes that influence the nutritional status of stunting, namely maternal characteristics (age, education level, occupation, and height of the mother). Methods: This quantitative research used a case-control design. The sample size was 50 children aged 1-3 years in Muaro Sijinjung Village, Sijunjung Regency, in May-June 2024. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The research instrument used a questionnaire, and bivariate analysis used the Chi-Square Test. Data processing was done through editing, coding, entry, and tabulation. This study adhered to the ethical principles of research, including informed consent from respondents and confidentiality of their personal data. Results: There is a relationship between maternal height and maternal nutrition with the incidence of stunting with a P value of 0.00 and there is no relationship between maternal age and the incidence of stunting with a P value-e of 0.233. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between maternal height and maternal nutrition with the incidence of stunting and there is no significant relationship between maternal age and the incidence of stunting in Muaro Sijinjung Village, Sijunjung Regency in 2024. It is hoped that this research can increase knowledge and insight to prevent stunting in children
