Abstract

The idea of post-authoritarian rural development is seen as the transformation of rural development since it no longer places the village as an object of development characterized by the demand for the preparation of rural development instruments. However, in practice, the development instruments do not result in the improvement of agricultural and livestock productivity as it happened in Kampung Pasir Angling, Suntenjaya Village, West Bandung Regency, West Java. Using a critical development perspective, the study argues that rural development transformation may apply if not limited to changes in public policy strategies, but rather to the social change in various sectors of rural life. This article argues that the transformation of rural development—which has the characteristics of empowerment — can be achieved when there is a placement of the civil society element as the party that initiates the articulation of needs and activates the consciousness of farmer-breeders in the practice of rural development. This article was written based on a qualitative research in describing the community development of farmer-breeders in Kampung Pasir Angling, Suntenjaya Village, West Bandung Regency, West Java.

Abstract

After the Reformation, various companies implement CSR programs with various goals, features, and forms. This article discusses the latent function of the BROERI Program of PT Pertamina EP Asset 3 Subang Field as an instrument to build corporate relations with its stakeholder (Community Relation), besides its manifest function in capacity building and community independence (Community Development). The previous studies have been more dominant in highlighting and focusing on the evaluation of community development functions of the CSR programs, rather than their community relation function. Whereas for oil and gas companies, the risk of conflict with communities and other local stakeholders tends to be high and needs to be mitigated with appropriate CSR programs. The author argues that behind the design that is explicitly directed to manifest functions (Community Development), the CSR programs also have a crucial latent function as a medium of communication and negotiation with community stakeholders (Community Relations). The result of this research with the qualitative method shows that the BROERI Program of PT Pertamina EP Asset 3 Subang Field is less able to establish and increase the capacity of the community. Besides, the program also does not function optimally as a "Communication Forum" in maintaining corporate relations with its local stakeholders. Conceptually, in assessing the performance of the CSR program of the oil and gas company, the function of community relations must be a dimension with a balanced weight to the function of community development.

Abstract

Abstract Latour removes the boundaries between natural sciences and humanities. Science for Latour is cultural practise, at the same time in every cultural practice, nature and objects are also actively involved. In that sense, Latour's constructivism encourages the emergence of non-human actors as drivers of the societal changes. By that, he provoked sociology to expand its subject matter. The Social in sociology must be seen as an association involving human and non-human actors. Key words: Constructivism, Expansion of agency, actant, actor network theory.

Abstract

The article aims to describe the changes in gender relations in the family of women who became impromptu online entrepreneurs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theories of gender role triplicity and social capital were used to analyze research findings. Data for this qualitative longitudinal research was collected through observations and interviews with fourteen married women in Depok, West Java, from 2020 to 2022. Research findings illustrated that when women became entrepreneurs during the pandemic, there was a change in their role, from the domestic to the public sphere. However, when family economic condition improved after the pandemic, women returned to the domestic sphere and gave up their business networks. On the other hand, women who continued to engage in entrepreneurship did not leave their domestic roles, even though their business network was growing. These dynamics of gender relations in the family illustrated how traditional roles in the family are changing; while also suggesting strategies employed by women when transitioning into impromptu online entrepreneurs during and after the pandemic. Their educational background and social capital become the basis for distinct gender relations in their families. This article also suggests the importance of promoting gender equality to support women's empowerment in the domestic and public spheres.

Abstract

This study investigates how digital platforms can be leveraged to strengthen social capital and thus support sustainable urban development in Jakarta. Despite positive strides, there are several obstacles that hinders the optimal utilization of digital platforms in terms of information dissemination and enhancing stakeholder trust: (1) constraints posed by the communication medium; (2) digital literacy of stakeholders, and (3) ineffective participation of community members. Employing a qualitative method, this case study reveals that stakeholders across all levels play a pivotal role in encouraging participation among community members. Moreover, the findings indicate that utilizing integrated digital platforms for information management within neighborhood communities may foster collaboration, creating a space for inclusive discussions between regional administrators and the community. Strengthened networks resulting from the process may in turn contribute to regional development, since the collective capacity to address challenges is improved as well.

Abstract

The agricultural sector plays a vital role in rural communities in Indonesia. Agricultural development stands as one of the most crucial development agendas pursued by both governmental and non-governmental entities. An essential aspect to examine within agricultural development is its implications for the livelihoods of farming communities. This study analyzes the implications of agricultural development programs on farmers' livelihoods through the lens of sustainable livelihoods. Employing a qualitative method with a case study approach, the research was conducted among dryland farmers practicing intercropping farming systems. The case study was carried out in Singosari Village, Talang Padang Sub-District, Tanggamus District. Primary data collection involved interviews, participatory observations, documentation, and secondary data through a literature review over a 9-month period. Findings indicate that the implications of agricultural development programs by both state and private actors are unevenly distributed among farmer groups. Cultivation patterns of commodity crops (coffee and cocoa) intervened by agricultural development programs tend to be unsustainable, while non-intervened cultivation remains sustainable. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that agricultural development interventions consider specific farming practices and local agrarian structures in projecting program implications and benefit distribution. Keywords: Agricultural Development, Sustainable Livelihoods, Dryland Agriculture.
