Abstract

This case study investigates the application of an integrated Lean and Six Sigma (Lean Six Sigma/LSS) approach to improve quality management in the maritime transport industry. This qualitative research uses the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework as a methodological guide. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key personnel and an analysis of internal documents from a shipping company. The results show that the application of LSS was able to significantly address major operational issues, particularly related to schedule delays and fuel cost inefficiency. In the Define phase, the problem was identified and measured quantitatively. The Measure phase used real-time data to establish a performance baseline and identify variation. The analysis in the Analyze phase revealed that the root causes of the issues were a combination of poor coordination, static route planning, and inefficient work procedures. The solutions designed in the Improve phase included dynamic route optimization and the standardization of loading and unloading processes. Finally, the Control phase ensured the sustainability of the improvements through a performance dashboard and routine audits. The study concludes that LSS is not merely a quality improvement methodology but a business strategy capable of enhancing competitive advantage. Its application requires adaptation by leveraging technology and a commitment from all organizational levels. These findings provide a practical framework for the maritime industry to achieve greater efficiency, reliability, and safety.

Abstract

This study was the development of digital technology has brought about significant changes in the field of education, including in the field of maritime education. As an educational institution, Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat is able to adjust to digital learning innovations in order to improve the quality of the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study is to understand how digital learning innovations can increase students' motivation to learn. The research methodology uses a deskriptif kualitatif approach using data collection techniques such as document analysis, participatory observation, and interview. The study's findings indicate that the use of interactive media, learning management system (LMS)-based instruction, and simulation-based video instruction can all increase intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. The findings of this study suggest that digital learning development is an effective strategy for raising student motivation and academic quality.

Abstract

Port of Tanjung Priok, Indonesia, faces excessive ship and container dwell times—particularly at Terminal III—driven by container traffic growth that outstrips the capacity of handling facilities. This study analyzes container ship handling time (dwell time), assesses the impact of adding ship-to-shore cranes, and estimates the required berth length and yard area based on projected container flows. Secondary data on container throughput for 2009–2013 were used and projected forward to 2014–2018. Queueing analysis was performed with an M/M/c model to obtain standard system performance metrics (L, Lq, W, Wq), which were then converted into dwell-time estimates; berth and yard requirements were calculated using berth-throughput approaches and standard space requirements per TEU. Results indicate that under the existing equipment level of 39 cranes, dwell time rose from about 6.92 days in 2009 to more than 14 days in 2012–2013, substantially exceeding operational standards. Simulations show that increasing the number of cranes to 51–55 units would reduce dwell time to approximately 5.85–6.82 days. Projected infrastructure needs for 2018 include an aggregate berth length of roughly 7,339 m and a stacking yard area of about 168.9 hectares. The findings underscore the urgent need for additional handling equipment and infrastructure development and point to opportunities for enhancing analysis and operational monitoring through the application of artificial intelligence for dwell-time prediction and real-time smart-port management.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has become a critical component in enhancing efficiency and precision within maritime logistics operations, particularly in tugboat activities. This research explores the challenges faced in utilizing digital technology systems that support the operational flow of tugboat logistics at PT. Kartika Samudra Adijaya. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study gathers data through interviews, document analysis, and field observations. The results highlight several major obstacles, including low levels of digital proficiency among employees, unstable internet connections, insufficient system integration, and irregularities in data entry and information management. Additionally, reluctance to adopt new technologies and inadequate system upkeep contribute to delays and reduced operational effectiveness. The study emphasizes that improving digital skills, strengthening technological infrastructure, and increasing system dependability are essential actions to maximize the use of digital technology in tugboat logistics. These efforts are expected to enhance operational continuity and improve overall logistics performance. Overall, the study emphasizes that the success of digital technology implementation in tugboat logistics does not solely depend on systems and devices, but also on workforce readiness, sufficient financial support.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze maritime safety and security policies in supporting the maritime transportation system. This research uses a descriptive method, because the data collected are in the form of words, images, and not numbers. The data comes from interview scripts, field observations/notes, Focus Group Discussions, videotapes, photographs, notes or memos, and other official documents. Data analysis uses an ethical and emic approach and a triangulation process. Informant determination uses a purposive technique. Research result: Maritime transportation in Indonesia has not yet developed optimally, but has strong potential to be developed, considering its characteristics of being able to carry out mass transportation. Therefore, the safety and security system is a key factor that must be considered and as a basis and benchmark for decision making. The safety and security system for maritime transportation in Indonesia has not been running optimally, accidents still often occur both due to natural factors and human factors. Government policies in the maritime sector, both the fishing industry and the shipping industry have not been implemented consistently in accordance with applicable laws. So far, the development of maritime potential has been hampered by structural problems, and there has been no national political awareness of the magnitude of the economic, fisheries and maritime potential.
