Abstract

This study evaluated the antifungal potential of bioactive compounds present in betel nut seeds (Areca catechu L.) through an in silico approach. The assessment included prediction of antifungal activity (Pa), pharmacokinetic profiling using SwissADME, evaluation of physicochemical and drug-likeness properties, and toxicity prediction with pkCSM. The results indicated that betel nut seeds contain various bioactive constituents, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, fatty acids, and proanthocyanidins, which may contribute to antifungal activity through different mechanisms. Among the analyzed compounds, proanthocyanidins showed the highest predicted antifungal activity, followed by arecoline and catechin. These compounds are expected to inhibit fungal growth by disrupting cell membrane integrity, reducing biofilm formation, and interfering with essential metabolic pathways. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed that low-molecular-weight compounds, such as catechin, certain alkaloids, and fatty acids, generally exhibited greater solubility and drug-likeness, suggesting greater bioavailability. In contrast, larger polyphenolic compounds demonstrated lower absorption potential but may remain active through direct interactions with fungal cell surfaces. Toxicity predictions suggested that most compounds pose relatively low mutagenic risk, although some alkaloids may have hepatotoxic potential. Overall, the findings indicate that the antifungal properties of Areca catechu are likely attributable to the combined action of multiple bioactive compounds, highlighting its potential as a natural source for developing environmentally friendly antifungal agents.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the most effective dose and timing of NPK fertilizer application and to examine their interaction on the growth and yield of rice plants. The study was conducted in Gampong Lampreh, Ingin Jaya District, Aceh Besar Regency, using the IR-64 rice seed variety obtained from the Samahani Main Seed Center (BBI). The study was arranged using a 3 × 3 factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications, yielding 27 experimental units. The first factor was the NPK fertilizer dose, while the second was the timing of fertilizer application: 0 and 10 days, 10 and 20 days, and 15 and 30 days after planting. The parameters observed included plant height, number of tillers, and dry grain weight per hectare. The results showed that NPK fertilizer application significantly affected plant height at 35 and 75 days after planting (DAP), and had a very significant effect at 55 DAP. The number of tillers was significantly affected at 35 days after planting, very significantly at 55 days after planting, but not significantly different at 75 days after planting. NPK fertilizer treatment did not significantly affect dry grain weight per hectare. The best dose was obtained at 50 g NPK per plot. There was a significant interaction between the dose and timing of fertilizer application on plant height at 75 days after planting and on the number of tillers at 55 days after planting. In contrast, other parameters did not show significant interactions.

Abstract

Green coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is one of the tropical horticultural commodities widely consumed by Indonesian people and is empirically believed to have health benefits due to its vitamin C and antioxidant compounds. This study aims to analyze the levels of vitamin C and antioxidant activity in water and green coconut meat using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Vitamin C levels were determined using the iodimetric titration method, while antioxidant activity was measured based on the percentage inhibition of DPPH radicals at five concentration series (1,000-5,000 ppm) using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, then expressed as an IC50 value through a linear regression equation. The results showed that the average vitamin C levels in coconut water were 29.35 ± 5.08 mg/100 g and in coconut meat were 28.48 ± 4.93 mg/100 g. The IC50 value of coconut water was 5,824.52 ppm and coconut meat was 5,423.78 ppm, both well above the 200 ppm threshold, so both samples were classified as having very weak antioxidant activity based on the DPPH test. Coconut meat showed a slightly lower IC50 than coconut water, but the difference was not substantial. The low levels of vitamin C in both parts of the green coconut fruit are suspected to be one of the main factors in the weak antioxidant activity detected. This study provides baseline data on the antioxidant potential of fresh green coconut without further extraction treatment, which can be a reference for future research on the processing or fortification of coconut-based food products.

Abstract

This study analyzes the proximate composition, vitamin C content, and antioxidant activity of the water and flesh of young green coconuts (Cocos nucifera L.). Coconut water contains 7.19–8.20% carbohydrates, 29.35 mg/100g vitamin C, and 0.068–0.163% protein. The flesh contains 5.56–6.44% fat, higher protein levels, an average moisture content of 87.50%, and 0.88% ash. Antioxidant activity increases linearly in the water and fluctuates in the flesh. The results highlight coconut water's potential as an antioxidant source and the nutritional value of the flesh for food and health applications.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the water quality characteristics and growth performance of vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultured in a household-scale biofloc system in Alue Naga, Banda Aceh. Observations were conducted in two round ponds over an 80-day culture period, covering water quality parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, transparency, and floc volume) and growth parameters (ABW, ADG, survival rate, and FCR). The results showed that all water quality parameters remained within the optimal range for vannamei shrimp culture, with mean temperatures of 27.25±0.91°C (Pond 1) and 27.83±0.69°C (Pond 2), pH of 7.35±0.15 and 7.34±0.13, and dissolved oxygen of 6.53±0.30 and 6.49±0.26 mg/L. Shrimp growth performance showed a consistent increase in ABW from 1.6 and 1.4 g to 12.3 and 11.7 g at DOC 80, with ADG ranging from 0.14–0.26 g/day and relatively efficient FCR values (0.95 and 1.02). However, the survival rate declined to 52% and 57%, lower than the ideal target of 80%. These findings indicate that the household-scale biofloc system maintained stable water quality and supported satisfactory shrimp growth, although the survival rate remains a limiting factor requiring further improvement.
