Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the green water system in the nursery phase of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus by observing growth performance, water quality, and survival rate. The experiment was conducted for 21 days using 450-liter circular tanks with two treatments: green water and clear water systems. The green water system was established by adding plankton starter to stimulate algal growth, while the clear water system used clean water with routine siphoning. Observations included absolute length, absolute weight, water quality parameters pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrite, and phosphate, and survival rate. The results indicate that the green water system provided superior nursery performance compared to clear water. Tilapia seeds reared in green water exhibited higher growth in length and weight, more stable water quality, and a greater survival rate 90% than those in the clear water system 80%. These improvements are attributed to the presence of microalgae, which serve as natural feed as well as bioremediation agents that reduce ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate toxicity. Therefore, the green water system proves to be more effective, economical, and environmentally friendly for tilapia nursery culture compared to the clear water system.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the level of heavy metal pollution and the potential ecological and human health risks in the waters of Selangan, Bontang City. The research focuses on analyzing the concentrations of iron (Fe) and mercury (Hg) in sediment, considering that both elements are toxic, persistent, and capable of bioaccumulating within the food chain. The study was conducted over six months, from January to June 2023, at four sampling stations representing the environmental conditions of Selangan waters. The methodology included sediment sampling, sample preparation through drying and grinding, and laboratory analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) to determine Fe concentrations. The results were then compared with quality standards established by the Washington Annotated Code 173-204-320 and Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) Regulation No. 5 of 2018. The findings indicate the presence of heavy metal contamination across all sampling stations. Fe concentrations ranged from 2.35 mg to 6.308 mg, significantly exceeding the permissible limit of 0.3 mg/L. Meanwhile, Hg concentrations ranged from 0.015 mg to 0.028 mg, also surpassing the standard threshold of 0.001 mg/L. These results clearly demonstrate heavy metal pollution in the Selangan waters, posing potential threats to marine ecosystem health and coastal communities. Regular monitoring and mitigation measures are urgently recommended to prevent further environmental degradation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the feasibility of vannamei shrimp farming in Kramat District, Tegal Regency. The research was conducted on several shrimp ponds using semi-intensive and intensive systems. The analysis includes calculations of investment costs, fixed and variable costs, revenues, income, and business feasibility indicators such as R/C Ratio, Payback Period, Break Even Point (BEP), Net Present Value (NPV), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results show that vannamei shrimp farming is feasible, as indicated by an average R/C Ratio of 1.68 and a Payback Period of 1.90. All ponds yielded positive NPV values, with an average of IDR 546,070,598 and an IRR of 58%, which exceeds the 5.5% discount rate. Both price and production BEP values have been surpassed in all farming units. The intensive pond system proved to be more profitable than the semi-intensive system. Therefore, vannamei shrimp farming in Kramat District, particularly in Dampyak Village, has strong financial prospects and is feasible for development through intensive approaches and the application of modern technology.

Abstract

Male reproductive performance serves as a foundational metric for predicting the reproductive quality traits of progeny. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between semen quality in Etawa Grade (PE) and Boer bucks and non-genetic factors, specifically age and season. The research utilised secondary data on fresh semen production collected from 2018 to 2022. Quality parameters evaluated included ejaculate volume and individual sperm motility. Data were obtained from the Central Java Artificial Insemination Center and analysed using the Statistical Analysis System On Demand for Academics to determine the interactive effects of age and season on fresh semen production. The results indicated that bucks in the younger age category tended to produce higher semen volumes compared to other age groups. In conclusion, there is a general interaction between age and season on the semen quality of PE and Boer bucks. The interaction observed in fresh semen volume and motility was significantly influenced by individual age differences and seasonal factors based on rainfall levels. Further research is warranted to investigate these interactions across additional macroscopic and microscopic parameters.

Abstract

The camouflage grouper (Epinephelus microdon) is a high-value marine aquaculture species with significant economic importance, making effective broodstock management a key factor in ensuring successful seed production. Healthy and well-managed broodstock play a crucial role in producing high-quality eggs and larvae, thereby improving hatchery productivity. This study aimed to examine the broodstock management practices applied at UD. Arif Hatchery, Buleleng Regency, Bali. A descriptive research design with a direct observation approach was conducted over 60 days through field observations, interviews, and the collection of primary and secondary data. The study involved 15 broodstock maintained in concrete tanks under a flow-through water system with a male-to-female ratio of 3:1. The management practices included tank preparation, broodstock selection, water quality monitoring, feeding with fresh tuna and squid using an at satiation method, disease prevention and treatment, and natural spawning through environmental manipulation to stimulate gonadal maturation. Male broodstock received Hormonviton supplementation to enhance sperm development, while Elbaju was administered to accelerate wound healing in injured fish. No signs of parasitic infection were observed throughout the study, indicating that the broodstock remained healthy under the applied management system. Overall, systematic broodstock management effectively maintained broodstock health, supported reproductive performance, and increased the potential for successful spawning. These findings provide practical guidance for hatchery managers and contribute to improving the efficiency and sustainability of camouflage grouper seed production.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the growing popularity of keeping Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis macularius) with various morphs, while comprehensive information on the relationship between their physical variations and behavioral characteristics in local breeding facilities remains limited. The study aimed to identify different Leopard Gecko morphs and compare their morphological and behavioral characteristics at the Gecko World breeding facility in Tulungagung Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through direct observation of physical characteristics and behavior, interviews with the breeder, and a literature review. The results showed clear morphological differences among the three morphs, particularly in skin coloration and pattern, skin texture, and body length. Behavioral differences were also observed, with certain morphs exhibiting varying levels of aggressiveness and different responses to environmental stimuli. Overall, the findings indicate that the physical characteristics of Leopard Geckos influence how they interact with and adapt to their captive environment. For example, they adjust to higher ambient temperatures by changing their skin color and close their eyes when exposed to direct sunlight. These findings are expected to provide a useful reference for breeders at Gecko World in optimizing husbandry practices and improving animal welfare by considering the unique characteristics and behavioral responses of each morph.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Human Development Index (HDI), economic growth, and the open unemployment rate on poverty levels in Tuban Regency during the period 2010–2024. This research uses a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis and secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency and other relevant institutions. The results indicate that HDI has a negative and significant effect on poverty, demonstrating that improvements in education, health, and living standards contribute significantly to poverty reduction. Meanwhile, economic growth and the open unemployment rate show positive but insignificant effects on poverty levels. These findings indicate that economic growth has not been optimally distributed among communities, while the dominance of the informal sector in the labor structure causes unemployment to have limited direct influence on poverty conditions. Simultaneously, HDI, economic growth, and the open unemployment rate significantly affect poverty levels in Tuban Regency. Therefore, effective policies emphasizing human resource development, employment improvement, and inclusive economic growth are required to accelerate poverty alleviation. This study provides important insights for local governments in formulating sustainable development strategies to reduce poverty through improving community welfare and economic equality.
